Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a quick visual record of a webpage on a Mac, open it in your browser and press Shift-Command-4 to capture just the page area, or Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire screen. Review the image before sharing it with a client. If you need to preserve a Safari webpage’s graphics and links rather than record how it looked, use File > Save As > Web Archive instead; that creates an archive, not a screenshot.
Choose the right kind of record
| What you need | Mac or Safari option | What it records |
|---|---|---|
| Show the whole display | Shift-Command-3 | An image of the entire screen, which can include the desktop and unrelated content. |
| Show only the relevant page area | Shift-Command-4 | An image of the area you select with the crosshair. |
| Capture a window or use capture controls | Screenshot app or window capture | A screenshot using the selected capture mode; some apps may restrict window screenshots. |
| Keep a Safari webpage and its graphics and links for later reference | Safari: File > Save As > Web Archive | A webpage archive, not a pixel-identical screenshot. Links work only while their destination webpages remain available. |
| Keep the page’s HTML source | Safari: File > Save As > Page Source | HTML source code, not a visual record of the rendered page. |
For client documentation about appearance, use a screenshot. For retaining webpage content for later reference, a Web Archive may be more useful. Safari may be prevented from saving some items on a webpage. The available documentation does not establish a universal, built-in, browser-independent command for a stitched full-page screenshot on macOS, so do not treat Web Archive as an equivalent image-based substitute.
Capture the visible page on your Mac
- Prepare the browser. Open the page and arrange the window so the relevant content is visible. Close unrelated windows if they could appear in a full-screen capture, and move the pointer away from text or controls you need to show.
- Choose a capture.
- Press Shift-Command-3 for the entire screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then drag the crosshair over the area you want. While selecting, press Space to move the selection without changing its size.
- Use the Screenshot app or window capture when you need their additional capture controls. Select the intended window carefully.
- Review the result. Click the screenshot thumbnail to edit it, or wait for the file to save to the desktop. Check that the page is legible and that the image does not expose unrelated client information.
- Attach and label it accurately. Call the image a screenshot. If you instead attach a Web Archive or Page Source file, identify it as such; neither should be presented as a picture of the rendered page.
Some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. Screenshot-format controls described by Apple are tied to supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, so their availability should not be assumed on every Mac or older macOS version.
Save a Safari webpage instead of taking a screenshot
In Safari, choose File > Save As > Web Archive when your aim is to retain a webpage’s graphics and links for later reference. It preserves page content differently from an image: it does not establish exactly how the page appeared at capture time, and linked destinations remain usable only while those webpages are available. Some webpages may prevent saving items that appear on the page.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
File > Save As > Page Source saves HTML source only. Choose it when you need the source code, not when a client needs a visual record.
Inspect page structure separately
Safari Web Inspector is for examining webpage contents, not taking a screenshot. Open it with Develop > Show Web Inspector or press Option-Command-I. You can also right-click the page and choose Inspect Element. Use it when technical documentation needs page structure; capture a separate screenshot if the record must show appearance.

For a screenshot generated from a URL by an API, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request option. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP shot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo says it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, and its Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. This API creates a screenshot from a URL, rather than capturing your Mac’s desktop or a specific browser window.
