Install Playwright and its browser
Install the playwright package in your Node.js project, then install the browser engine you plan to launch. The commands below use Chromium:

Save the script below as screenshot.js and run it with node screenshot.js. If your project already has Playwright and its browser installed, skip the installation steps.
Capture and save a screenshot

})();The script launches Chromium, opens a page, navigates to the target URL, and writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. Playwright’s page.screenshot() also returns a Buffer, so you can handle the image bytes in Node.js instead of writing directly to a file. See the Playwright Page API.

Choose what to capture and how to save it

These options are documented in the Page screenshot API. A relative path is resolved from the current working directory. If you omit path, the method returns a Buffer but does not save an image to disk.

For screenshots used in visual checks, incidental animation or cursor state can create differences. Playwright provides screenshot options to disable animations and transitions, hide the text caret, cover selected locator regions with a mask, or apply a stylesheet during capture. These controls reduce some sources of variation, but they do not make screenshots identical across machines. See the screenshot options.

});Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. For visual baselines, generate and compare screenshots in the same environment. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Use screenshot assertions for visual regression tests
A one-off call to page.screenshot() saves an image; it does not compare the image with an expected baseline. For regression checks, Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against the expectation, and it is intended for use with the Playwright test runner. See Visual comparisons.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No screenshot file appears: Confirm that you supplied a
path. Without one, Playwright returns image data as aBufferand does not write a file. Check the process’s current working directory for relative paths. - The image shows only the top of the page: That is the default viewport capture. Add
fullPage: trueto include the full scrollable page. - The output is unexpectedly large: A device-scale capture can contain many more pixels than a CSS-scale capture. Try
scale: 'css'or choose JPEG when a lossy format is acceptable. - Repeated visual-test runs differ: Keep the browser and host environment consistent, and consider disabling animations, hiding the caret, masking dynamic areas, or applying a capture-only stylesheet. The screenshot controls cannot eliminate differences caused by varying environments.
- The script exits before closing the browser: Put navigation and capture inside a
tryblock and callbrowser.close()infinally, so cleanup runs when an operation throws.
