To schedule website screenshots for recurring client reports, separate the job into two parts: use a browser or screenshot service to capture each page, then use a scheduler to run that capture at your reporting interval. A self-managed setup can use Playwright in a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow; a managed screenshot API is an alternative if you do not want to maintain a browser runtime.
Plan the report capture before scheduling it
A recurring screenshot is useful only if it captures the same thing under comparable conditions and the resulting files reach the person preparing the report. Decide the following for each site before automating the job:
- URL and access: list the exact page to capture and determine whether it is public or requires authentication. Credential handling for authenticated pages depends on your chosen scheduler and client requirements; do not place secrets in a script or report output.
- Capture scope: choose a visible viewport, the entire scrollable page, or a specific element. Playwright documents file, buffer, full-page, and element screenshots in its screenshots guide.
- Browser and viewport: choose a browser, viewport size, and any other settings the report needs. Keep them fixed between runs if you plan to compare screenshots.
- Readiness condition: decide what indicates that the page is ready. A particular selector or page state can be more meaningful than simply waiting a fixed number of seconds.
- Cadence and output: set the run interval to match the client reporting cycle, then choose a stable filename pattern, storage location, retention period, and delivery method that meet your client’s access requirements.
There is no universally best storage or delivery method established by the sources cited here; choose one that fits the client’s workflow and permissions.
Build a self-managed Playwright workflow
This example captures a configured list of pages once per scheduled run. It saves full-page PNGs with the site label and date in the filename. Replace the example URLs and labels with the sites in your report. The schedule below is an example; set the cron expression to the cadence you actually need.

1. Add a capture script

}domcontentloaded and a visible body are deliberately modest readiness checks, not guarantees that every site’s images, advertisements, or client-rendered content have finished. Replace the body check with a selector for the content your report depends on. Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, element screenshots, and screenshot buffers; use the mode that matches the report rather than capturing more than you need.

The artifact step makes the run’s output available from the workflow run; it is not, by itself, a complete client delivery or long-term retention plan. Decide who needs access and how long files should be kept, then configure storage and delivery accordingly. GitHub Actions is one scheduling option, not a requirement: the same capture script can be started by another scheduler.
A community GitHub Action for scheduled screenshots documents cron configuration, URL lists, output paths, retries, timeouts, wait settings, parallel execution, and optional pull-request creation. Those are documented features of that repository, not independent validation of its reliability or suitability for a particular client: github-screenshot-action documentation.

Keep recurring screenshots comparable
A changed image does not necessarily mean the website changed. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance notes that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. It recommends using the same environment used to generate the baseline for consistent screenshots: Playwright visual comparisons.
- Keep the browser, viewport, device scale factor, capture scope, and readiness condition consistent.
- Use the same runner environment where practical, especially if reports compare images over time.
- Choose a page-specific readiness selector when possible. A fixed delay or a network-idle condition can be unsuitable for sites with ongoing background requests; validate wait behavior on each target.
- Review unexpected differences before presenting them as site changes; capture-environment changes can also affect rendering.
The community action’s README uses networkidle0 as an example wait strategy. Treat it as an example to test against the sites you capture, not a universal setting.

Choose the right capture type

- No screenshot file appears: inspect the workflow log for dependency, browser-installation, navigation, or screenshot errors. Confirm that the script writes to the same path the artifact step uploads.
- The capture fails on a slow page: check whether navigation or selector waits are timing out. Increase the timeout only if the site genuinely needs more time; also check the target URL and whether the page is reachable from the runner.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: verify the page URL and response, then wait for a selector tied to the report’s content instead of assuming that initial navigation means the page is ready.
- Runs differ even when the site looks unchanged: check that browser version, runner environment, viewport, device scale, and capture settings have not changed. Differences in rendering environment can affect comparisons.
- The output is too large or misses relevant content: reconsider whether full-page capture is necessary, or capture a specific element. Match the scope to what the client actually needs to review.
- Scheduled output is not reaching the client: a successful capture and an accessible report are separate steps. Check artifact access and retention, or verify the storage and delivery integration you selected.
