If audio matches the picture at the start of a continuous church YouTube stream but becomes increasingly late or early, measure the mismatch at more than one point before changing FFmpeg options. A fixed offset and audio drift that gets worse over time are different problems: shifting audio once may address the former, but does not correct a timing or rate mismatch that accumulates.
First determine whether it is a fixed offset or cumulative drift
Choose an event that is easy to recognize in both picture and sound, such as a spoken word with visible mouth movement or a clap. Compare it in the stream near startup and again after a known elapsed period. Record whether audio leads or lags and approximately how much at each observation; do not assume which direction the error takes.
- Stable mismatch: If the same lead or lag is present at startup and later, investigate initial alignment and the timestamps entering the pipeline. This is a fixed-offset symptom.
- Growing mismatch: If the separation increases over time, investigate clock or rate behavior, irregular capture timing, timestamp continuity, and dropped or duplicated data. A one-time shift will not resolve an error that keeps accumulating.
The distinction between a fixed offset and cumulative drift is also explained in the FFmpeg Cookbook’s audio-drift guide. The measurements establish the symptom, not its cause.
Map the audio, video, and clock path
Before editing the command, document how each signal reaches FFmpeg. Separate capture devices can rely on separate clocks, but the title alone does not establish that this is the cause in any particular church installation.

- Are audio and video captured by the same device, or by separate devices?
- Does audio come from a mixer or interface, a camera, a USB input, or a network source?
- Which FFmpeg inputs and stream maps select the audio and video?
- Are the streams copied or re-encoded? What sample rate and frame rate are configured?
- Does any part of the chain resample, buffer, or rewrite timestamps?
For a useful diagnosis, retain the complete FFmpeg command with stream keys removed, the FFmpeg version and build output, startup stream metadata, representative logs, and sync measurements at multiple elapsed times. These details can distinguish among possible causes; none should be presumed without evidence.
Read timestamp and synchronization options in context
FFmpeg offers synchronization and timestamp-handling options, but their effects depend on the input, output, option placement, sync mode, and installed version. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and verify behavior against the build running the stream before changing a live command.

-adrift_threshold and audio synchronization
FFmpeg documents -adrift_threshold as a minimum difference between timestamps and audio data that triggers adding or dropping samples; the documented behavior requires -async to be positive. This is not a universal repair switch. Confirm the sync mode, option scope, and actual timestamp behavior in the installed version before testing it.
-dts_delta_threshold and timestamp discontinuities
-dts_delta_threshold addresses detected timestamp discontinuities by adjusting timestamps when a jump exceeds its threshold. FFmpeg documents this correction for formats that allow discontinuities, including MPEG-TS and HLS. It is not a general fix for clock drift. FFmpeg disables the correction when -copyts is used, except when timestamp wrapping is detected. Use it only when the input format and logs support that diagnosis.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Verify YouTube’s ingest baseline and monitor the stream
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. These are ingest recommendations and baseline checks; meeting them does not by itself explain or cure an accumulating audio offset.

YouTube recommends a preflight test with audio and movement similar to the planned event, followed by monitoring stream health and messages. Its live streaming tips also advise ongoing audio/video quality monitoring and checking that the local archive file continues to grow. Test speech and any music or instrumental sections representative of the service. During the stream, compare the YouTube preview or player with local FFmpeg output so you can see whether the mismatch appears before or after ingest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change one thing, then repeat the measurement
- Save the current command, relevant logs, version/build information, and the startup and later sync observations.
- Use the signal-path and timestamp evidence to select one specific change to test. Do not alter several inputs or synchronization settings at once.
- Run a test stream using the same recognizable audio/video event and compare sync at startup and after a known elapsed period.
- Keep the change only if the repeated measurements support it. If the error remains or changes unpredictably, return to the command, logs, and source path rather than assuming a hardware replacement is needed.
The exact correction cannot be identified from the title alone: the command, capture chain, FFmpeg version, and measured drift are needed. A dedicated interface, capture device, sync generator, or cable is not a responsible blanket recommendation without evidence about the installation.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the larger problem is keeping pre-recorded video live continuously on YouTube, rather than diagnosing this FFmpeg capture chain, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
