For recurring screenshots of a list of pages, use shot-scraper with cron or another scheduler. It handles capture and can read multi-shot YAML configuration; the scheduler decides when it runs. Choose Playwright instead when captures need custom browser actions or application-specific waits. If you want a dashboard to manage scheduled commands, pair a general-purpose job manager such as Cronbase with one of those capture tools.
How the pieces fit together
A scheduled screenshot job has two separate parts: capture software that opens a page and saves an image, and a scheduler that invokes the capture software at chosen times. shot-scraper and Playwright provide the capture layer; cron, a workflow runner, or a job manager provides the schedule.
Decide separately where the job will run and where its output will go. A hosted workflow runner avoids maintaining an always-on server, while system cron or a self-hosted job manager runs on infrastructure you control. Output can stay on the machine, be committed to a repository, or be sent to another storage destination you configure.

For a server you control, install the tool and browser in the environment that will execute the scheduled command. Then run the same capture command from cron or your chosen job runner. The GitHub Actions example demonstrates an automation pattern; it does not set a universal schedule. Set the cadence in your workflow or scheduler.
- Write down the target URLs, output names, viewport dimensions, and any required waits or page actions.
- Install shot-scraper and its browser in the job environment. The documented setup begins with
pip install shot-scraperandshot-scraper install. See the shot-scraper stable documentation. - Run a manual capture. Check that the page state, image dimensions, and output path are correct before scheduling it.
- Configure a recurring job in cron, a workflow runner, or a self-hosted job manager. Specify the capture command and working directory.

Choose Playwright for custom browser flows
Use Playwright when a screenshot depends on more than loading a URL—for example, when the script must interact with the page or wait for an application-specific condition. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and element screenshots. You are responsible for writing the browser flow and invoking it from a separate scheduler.

Keep the browser environment consistent if you compare screenshots over time. Playwright notes that output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Pin or control the runtime and browser build where possible, and keep fonts and other relevant environment details stable. When a self-hosted scheduler dashboard helps
Cronbase describes itself as an open-source, self-hosted cron manager. Consider it when you want a dashboard for general scheduled jobs. Pair it with shot-scraper or a Playwright script, then validate that the job environment can run the required browser and capture command. The available project description does not establish a screenshot-specific integration.

Plan the deployment and handle failures
Browser and runtime dependencies
Install the capture tool, browser, and required runtime in the same environment that runs the scheduled job. A command that works on a developer workstation may fail on a server if the browser or system dependencies are missing or differ.
Logs, timeouts, and retention
Decide how the scheduler records standard output and errors, how a failed capture is surfaced, and how long images and logs are kept. Set timeouts appropriate to the pages being captured and verify what happens when the process exits unsuccessfully. These policies depend on your host and scheduler; no single retention or failure policy applies to every setup.

Diagnose common problems
- The scheduled job cannot find the command: the scheduler may run with a different PATH or working directory than your interactive shell. Use the installed executable’s path where needed and set the job’s working directory explicitly.
- The browser fails to launch: confirm that the browser installation step ran in the job environment and that the environment has the required browser dependencies.
- Captures differ between runs: compare the host OS, browser build, fonts, settings, hardware, and headless configuration; rendering can vary across those conditions.
- The image shows an incomplete page: check whether the page needs a longer wait, a specific selector to appear, or a browser action before capture. Use Playwright when the capture requires a custom interaction flow.
- The job runs but images are missing: confirm the output path and permissions, then check whether the workflow or scheduler persists or uploads that path. A successful capture command does not itself choose long-term storage.
