Short answer: YouTube’s 12-hour guidance is about whether a livestream is saved as an archive and whether viewers can rewind—not a rule saying YouTube automatically ends the live broadcast after 12 hours. If your live feed really stops, check its status in YouTube Live Control Room and your streaming setup rather than assuming the archive limit caused it.

What YouTube’s 12-hour limit actually means

Archives may not be saved

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all.” That is a warning about replay availability, not a statement that YouTube shuts down the broadcast. See YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance.

Viewer rewind may be limited

DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. For very long streams, YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable when a stream is longer than 12 hours. Viewers losing the ability to rewind does not by itself mean the live feed has ended. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

First, identify what stopped

Check whether the broadcast ended, the replay is missing, or viewers simply can no longer rewind. Those are different issues, and the 12-hour guidance concerns the latter two.

  • The broadcast ended: Check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the encoder or streaming software for a disconnected or stopped session. YouTube’s cited 12-hour guidance does not give a universal cause for an individual broadcast stopping at that point.
  • The replay is missing: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Do not treat a missing replay as proof that YouTube ended the live feed at 12 hours.
  • Rewind stopped working: DVR capability may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. This is a viewer playback limitation, not confirmation that the live broadcast stopped.

What to do if the live broadcast really stopped

  1. Confirm the end in Live Control Room. Check the stream’s status and whether YouTube reports it as live or ended.
  2. Check the streaming software or encoder. Look for a stopped session or lost connection. The official 12-hour archive and DVR guidance does not diagnose a particular encoder, network, account, or broadcast.
  3. Keep a local recording if the content matters. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup because a long stream may not be captured. Verify that your recording is being saved and that the local storage has room; a local copy preserves content, but does not keep the YouTube broadcast live.
  4. Check music rights separately. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the music in the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for those rights on the provider; they do not establish that a rights issue caused a particular 12-hour stop. Read the Livestream terms and conditions.

Keeping a 24/7 music stream running

If continuous playback is essential, decide whether you can monitor the streaming setup and local recording, or would rather have uploaded videos loop from a cloud service. A local recording is for preserving a copy; it is not a fix for a broadcast that disconnects.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is available. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
