Its Help guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube’s public guidance does not explain exactly why a continuous broadcast may appear as multiple archived videos, so a split should not be attributed to a specific technical cause without evidence.
What YouTube says about archiving streams over 12 hours
YouTube’s archive guidance says it can automatically archive streams that are less than 12 hours long. It also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The same page applies this guidance to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions likewise say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The 12-hour figure is a duration boundary in YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee of successful capture below it or a stated success rate.
That is the documented limitation relevant to a 24/7 broadcast: it exceeds the duration for which YouTube describes automatic archiving. The Help pages do not say that YouTube will preserve such a broadcast as one complete video.
Why one 24/7 stream may appear as separate videos
YouTube’s reviewed Help pages do not explain the precise mechanism behind separate archive videos. They do not establish whether every creator sees the same behavior, whether a particular split marks an interruption in the incoming stream, or what causes a specific boundary. Treat those explanations as unconfirmed unless YouTube identifies the cause for your stream.

The reliable takeaway is narrower: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and the public guidance does not guarantee one complete archive for a 24/7 stream. Separate entries in Studio do not, by themselves, reveal why YouTube divided the recording.
Archives and DVR are different
An archive is a stored recording available after a stream. DVR is a viewer playback feature that allows seeking back while the broadcast is live. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live stream, but YouTube says a recording may still be available afterward. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Changing the DVR setting is therefore not a documented fix for archive splitting or for the risk that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured. It affects live playback, not the archive guarantee.
How to keep your own complete recording
If you need a dependable record of a continuous broadcast, keep a local recording as a backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. YouTube itself recommends a local archive. Its livestream tips advise checking that local archive files are intact and continuing to grow.

- Start a local recording. Use the recording option in your streaming setup alongside the live broadcast. Confirm that recording has actually begun; the exact control depends on the software or device you use.
- Monitor the file during the broadcast. Check that the recording file exists, is increasing in size, and remains available to the recording system. YouTube’s livestream tips recommend checking that local archive files are intact and growing.
- Check the recording after the stream. Open or inspect the resulting file and confirm it plays through the sections you need. A growing file alone does not prove that the final recording is complete or playable.
- Allow for storage needs. Required space depends on your recording’s resolution, bitrate, duration, and setup. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a drive size; estimate from your own recording settings and leave room for a long session.
- Find YouTube’s stream entries. In YouTube Studio, open the Live tab to find previous, current, and upcoming streams, as described in the encoder instructions. Check the entries there, but retain your local file if you need a complete copy.
