You can run a continuous rain-and-thunder broadcast on YouTube by sending a looping audio-and-visual program through a live-stream encoder. First verify that your channel is eligible, use content you have rights to, and create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Before you start: check eligibility and prepare your content
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; streamers must be at least 16. Check your channel’s status and live-stream access before building the program. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Use audio and visuals you have permission to stream
Use your own rain and thunder recordings, or material licensed for both live and archived use. Keep the license terms and proof of permission. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party material; a match can cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination. A dedicated sound machine, microphone, camera, or capture card is not inherently required for a pre-produced ambience stream. A computer running an encoder is one practical DIY route; check the current system requirements for the encoder you choose.

Set up a continuous rain-and-thunder stream with an encoder
- Prepare the program. Assemble the rain-and-thunder audio with visuals you have rights to use. Check that the audio loops cleanly and that the picture does not reveal unwanted edits or interruptions. Configure the encoder to repeat the program if you want it to continue beyond the length of one video.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Use the encoder workflow and locate the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions are to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Paste in the server URL and stream key, then select the prepared audio-and-visual program and the encoder’s looping option. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Start sending, then go live. Start the encoder’s stream output. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check that both sound and picture are working, and then start the broadcast there. Confirm the live player is playing as expected.
- Monitor the stream. Check periodically that the encoder is still sending and the program has not stopped, gone silent, or become stuck. Have a plan to restart the encoder and restore the stream if your computer or connection fails.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
A stream running continuously is not necessarily a stream YouTube will preserve as one recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive matters, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours and record a local backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Separate sessions may require you to start a new broadcast; YouTube’s guidance does not promise a seamless handoff. Test how your encoder and channel behave when ending and restarting a session, and do not assume viewers will experience uninterrupted playback across sessions.

Copyright permission is not the same as monetization eligibility
Rights clearance helps determine whether you may use material, but it does not guarantee monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams, and repetitive or mass-produced material can be considered “inauthentic content.” Reused content without meaningful original contribution can also fail monetization review, even if you hold a license or receive no copyright claim. Make the soundscape and visual treatment meaningfully your own, and check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies before relying on revenue.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled, and there is no restriction from the previous 90 days. Confirm that you meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement.
- Live Control Room receives no signal: Verify that the encoder is using the correct server URL and current stream key, and that its output is running. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview appears but the broadcast is not live: Starting the encoder only sends the feed. After checking the preview, start the broadcast from Live Control Room.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: Check for third-party audio or visuals, including material playing in the background. Remove disputed material or resolve permission and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- The archive is missing: A session exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep sessions under that threshold and record locally if the archive is important.
- The program stops looping: Confirm the encoder’s repeat or playlist behavior and test a full loop before scheduling a long session. Check the computer, encoder, and internet connection if the output has stopped.
