Set screenshot thresholds by separating two questions: how different an individual pixel’s color can be before it counts as changed, and how many changed pixels the whole screenshot may contain. In Playwright, the documented per-pixel threshold default is 0.2; aggregate limits such as maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio are unset by default. These are framework defaults, not universal project settings. Start with repeatable captures and strict comparisons, inspect actual diffs, then allow only the smallest measured tolerance that absorbs harmless variation without hiding meaningful UI changes. Playwright’s visual comparison guide and SnapshotAssertions API reference define the controls but do not prescribe a value that suits every application.

What screenshot thresholds control

Playwright Test uses the pixelmatch library for screenshot comparison. Its settings operate at two different levels:

  • Per-pixel color tolerance: threshold controls how much the perceived color of a corresponding pixel may differ before that pixel is counted as different. The documented default is 0.2; 0 is stricter and 1 is more permissive. The API describes comparisons in YIQ color space.
  • Whole-image difference allowance: maxDiffPixels sets a maximum count of different pixels, while maxDiffPixelRatio sets a maximum ratio. These are separate from threshold and are unset by default.

Do not read threshold: 0.2 as “20% of the screenshot may differ.” It concerns color variation at a corresponding pixel, not the total affected area.

How to choose a threshold for your tests

  1. Choose meaningful screenshot states. Capture the routes and UI states whose appearance matters, such as a loaded page or a particular component state. Keep the browser, viewport, fonts, data, and rendering environment consistent with the conditions used for ongoing checks wherever your project controls them.
  2. Begin with strict comparison and inspect failures. Use the default per-pixel threshold or a stricter value, and initially leave aggregate limits unset. Review the actual expected, actual, and diff images. A failure is evidence to investigate, not a reason by itself to raise a tolerance.
  3. Stabilize the capture before relaxing comparison. Find out whether changes come from real UI differences or volatile content such as timestamps, rotating promotions, animations, or other changing elements. Playwright retries screenshot assertions until consecutive screenshots match and documents ways to control volatile page content, including a custom stylesheet. Avoid capturing incidental hover effects unless they are part of the intended test state. See the Playwright guide.
  4. Match the setting to the noise. If corresponding pixels differ slightly in color, consider a small adjustment to threshold. If a small, understood area changes while the rest of the image is stable, consider a narrowly chosen maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio. Do not use a permissive color threshold to excuse a large changed area, or a large aggregate allowance to mask substantial differences.
  5. Keep exceptions local. Set a tolerance on the specific assertion or project that needs it rather than weakening checks across unrelated pages. Playwright documents configuration at both assertion and shared test-configuration levels in its API reference.
  6. Review intentional UI changes and update the baseline. When a visual change is expected and approved, update the reference screenshot using Playwright’s documented --update-snapshots workflow. A higher tolerance is not a substitute for reviewing the change.

This method yields a project-specific allowance based on observed harmless variation. Playwright documents option meanings and defaults, not a universal “best” threshold.

Playwright configuration examples

Set values on an individual screenshot assertion when only one image needs a tolerance. The following example assumes the test page has been opened and is ready to capture:

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-page.png', {
  threshold: 0.1,
  maxDiffPixels: 25,
});

Here, the example uses a stricter per-pixel color allowance than the documented 0.2 default and permits at most 25 pixels to count as different after that per-pixel comparison. Those numbers are illustrative starting points, not recommendations for every page; choose them only after examining real diffs.

For a ratio-based whole-image limit, use maxDiffPixelRatio instead of a pixel count when a proportional allowance better fits screenshots that vary in dimensions:

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-page.png', {
  threshold: 0.1,
  maxDiffPixelRatio: 0.001,
});

Do not set both aggregate controls casually. Pick the limit that expresses the policy you intend, and confirm how it behaves for your screenshot dimensions. For shared settings, Playwright’s snapshot assertion configuration can establish defaults; keep unusually tolerant cases at the assertion level so they do not affect unrelated checks. Consult the official API reference for the current option signatures and defaults.

Diagnose failures before changing limits

  • The diff is concentrated around text or edges: check whether browser, operating system, fonts, and rendering setup match the baseline environment. A modest per-pixel tolerance may address small color variation, but first make captures as repeatable as practical.
  • A whole region changes between runs: look for dynamic data, animation, delayed content, or transient widgets. Stabilize, mask, or neutralize only the genuinely volatile content using a documented approach such as Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet support.
  • Only a few pixels fail: inspect their location and meaning before setting an aggregate allowance. A small count can still represent an important icon, label, or boundary.
  • A large portion of the screenshot differs: treat it as a likely real change or capture-condition mismatch. Do not silence it by increasing maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio without review.
  • The baseline changed intentionally: review and approve the new appearance, then update the snapshot rather than permanently loosening comparison settings.

If you need screenshots for review or documentation rather than Playwright’s baseline-and-diff assertions, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a capture service, not a replacement for configuring Playwright’s visual assertions or approving their baselines.
