In Playwright Test, pass animations: 'disabled' to toHaveScreenshot() to stop CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations from changing a screenshot. Use Playwright’s reducedMotion: 'reduce' setting instead when you want to test how the site responds to a user who prefers less motion; it is a different test.
Disable animations for a Playwright screenshot assertion
Set the screenshot assertion’s animations option to 'disabled'. For a single assertion:

});Playwright documents that this option stops CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations. It handles finite and infinite animations differently: finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion and fire transitionend; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot and then played over afterward. So the option does not simply remove every animation rule or guarantee that every animation-related page update has finished.
Set a project-wide default
To apply the setting to Playwright Test screenshot assertions by default, add it under expect.toHaveScreenshot in playwright.config.ts:

Choose the right setting for the test’s goal

Reduced-motion emulation is not a screenshot-only animation switch. It exercises the page’s response to a user preference. MDN describes reduce as indicating that the user has enabled a device setting to minimize non-essential motion; the site may reduce or replace movement rather than remove every animation. The media feature also has a no-preference value. See Playwright’s browser context option and MDN’s prefers-reduced-motion reference.

}Use a screenshot stylesheet for targeted overrides
Playwright screenshot APIs also accept a stylesheet string or path. This can filter dynamic or volatile page content to make captures more deterministic. The documented screenshot stylesheet behavior can pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames for the relevant screenshot option; consult the Page screenshot API for the exact option and version.
A broad CSS override to try is:

}Treat this as a custom pattern, not a universal guarantee. It can alter the intended visual state, and cascade interactions may matter. Inspect the result to confirm that the screenshot shows the desired layout. JavaScript that independently changes the DOM or styles may need app-specific synchronization; there is no universal control established here for every JavaScript-driven animation or update.

Stabilize the rest of the screenshot
Disabling animation addresses only one source of variation. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match before comparing the result, and screenshot styles can also hide or change dynamic content. Keep other volatile page state under control.
- Use the same browser version, host operating system, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode in baseline creation and later runs where possible.
- Identify changing content such as timestamps, rotating content, or asynchronously loaded elements, then synchronize it or use a targeted screenshot style.
- When a capture still differs, inspect whether the mismatch is motion, changing page content, or a rendering-environment difference before widening CSS overrides.

Troubleshoot animation-related screenshot differences
- The assertion still changes between runs: Confirm that
animations: 'disabled'is on the assertion producing the screenshot. Then check for changing content and differences in the capture environment. - The screenshot shows an unexpected animation state: Remember that finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, while infinite animations are canceled to their initial state during the screenshot. Decide which state the test should represent.
- The page’s reduced-motion styling is not being tested: Use context-level
reducedMotion: 'reduce'and ensure the application has behavior or CSS for the preference. The screenshot assertion option is not a substitute for this test. - A CSS override does not stop the change: The change may be driven by JavaScript or another app-specific update rather than the CSS animation and transition rules in the override. Synchronize with the application state or target the relevant content.
- The override makes the screenshot less representative: Narrow the stylesheet to the elements causing instability and review the resulting layout rather than applying a blanket rule.
