To run screenshot comparison tests with BackstopJS, initialize a project, define repeatable scenarios and viewport sizes, then run backstop test. Review the reference, test, and diff images before using backstop approve to make intentional changes the new baseline. Future tests compare captures against the latest approved references.
What BackstopJS checks
BackstopJS automates visual regression testing by comparing screenshots of a web application over time. It helps identify visual changes; it does not replace functional assertions that verify whether a page or interaction behaves correctly.
The basic cycle is to capture the current page, compare it with an accepted reference, inspect any differences, and deliberately approve changes that should become the next reference set.
Install BackstopJS and initialize a project
Choose where to install it
The project README documents both global installation and local installation or use from a Node application. A global install makes the backstop command available on your path:

npm install -g backstopjsFor a project-local setup, use the package in the application’s own Node project and invoke its local executable through your project’s package-script workflow. The exact integration depends on that project’s package manager and scripts.
Scaffold the configuration
From the directory where you want the BackstopJS project files, run:
backstop initInitialization scaffolds configuration and supporting files. The README warns that it can overwrite existing files, so inspect the destination first, particularly in an established application repository.

Define scenarios and viewports
The default configuration is backstop.json in the project root. You can instead use JavaScript configuration, for example when comments are useful, or specify a different file with --config=<path>. A minimal useful configuration needs a project id, one or more viewports, and scenarios. Each scenario needs a label and a url; the URL can be absolute or local to the project.
Model stable user-visible states
Choose scenarios around meaningful, repeatable states your team wants to protect, rather than mechanically listing every URL. Include viewport dimensions for the layouts that matter, such as the responsive sizes your application supports. If a page depends on authentication, cookies, selectors, or interaction, consult the project’s scenario-property documentation instead of assuming a plain URL capture will reproduce the required state.
Keep the page state as deterministic as practical: dynamic content, animation, changing data, and inconsistent font or browser environments can create differences unrelated to a code change. BackstopJS supports configuration concerns such as cookies and interactions, but the exact scenario properties should be checked against the version installed in your project.

Run the comparison and review its report
Capture and compare
Run the suite from the project directory:
backstop testBackstopJS captures test bitmaps and compares them with the current references, then presents the results in a visual report. To rerun only scenarios matching a label pattern, use the filter option:
backstop test --filter=<scenarioLabelRegex>This is useful when investigating one scenario or rerunning failed cases. If your configuration is not the default file, pass the same --config=<path> selection used for that project.

Inspect before approving
Review the reference image, new test image, and diff for each relevant change. A reported difference may be a regression or an intended design update; the image comparison alone cannot decide which. If a change is intentional, approve it:

backstop approveThe latest test captures then become the references for future runs. Approval can be filtered to promote selected image files. When the test used a non-default configuration, use the same --config=<path> value with the approval command.
For team review, keep approved reference-image changes in version control alongside the code change and explain why the visual update is expected. That makes baseline changes auditable rather than silently normalizing a possible regression.

Control rendering variation
The README documents an optional --docker rendering mode to reduce differences caused by capture environments. It can make the browser environment more consistent; it does not guarantee that every source of nondeterminism disappears.

Set mismatch tolerance deliberately
misMatchThreshold is a percentage tolerance for image difference before a screenshot is marked failed. There is no universally correct value: the right threshold depends on rendering noise, fonts, animations, dynamic content, and how much difference your team is willing to review. First stabilize representative pages and inspect their diffs. Raising tolerance just to silence failures can hide meaningful changes.
Balance concurrency against runner capacity
The npm documentation describes separate concurrency controls for screenshot capture and image comparison: asyncCaptureLimit and asyncCompareLimit. If runs exhaust CI-worker memory, reduce concurrency. If the worker has capacity and runtime matters, tune the limits while monitoring that worker. The package documentation’s RAM guidance is expressly approximate, not a guaranteed memory benchmark.
Troubleshooting common comparison problems
- Initialization would overwrite project files: Stop and inspect the target directory before running
backstop init. Choose a clean directory or preserve existing files before scaffolding. - A scenario does not reproduce the page you expect: Check its label and URL, then determine whether it also needs authentication, cookies, selectors, or interactions. Use the scenario-property documentation for the installed version.
- Many diffs appear without an obvious UI change: Compare reference, test, and diff images; check for dynamic content, animation, font variation, and rendering-environment differences. Consider Docker mode for greater environment consistency.
- A small visual change fails the test: Review whether it is a genuine defect or expected update before changing
misMatchThreshold. Adjust tolerance only after inspecting representative output. - The CI runner runs out of memory: Lower
asyncCaptureLimitorasyncCompareLimitand rerun while monitoring worker use. - Approval updates the wrong references or fails to use the intended setup: Confirm the project configuration and pass the same
--config=<path>used during testing. Use the approval filter only when you intend to promote a subset.
