You can monitor an OBS stream without stopping it: leave OBS sending the stream, then open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room in another browser or device to check stream health and real-time metrics. To confirm what viewers can actually see and hear, open the public watch page on a separate device as well.
Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room
- Start the stream in OBS and leave it running. OBS continues sending the encoded video to YouTube while you monitor it elsewhere. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room from another browser or device and select the active stream. Check its status and any displayed error messages, then review real-time analytics. These checks do not require you to use OBS’s stop control or end the YouTube stream.
- Use the public watch page for a playback check. Open the stream on a separate device to confirm it is accessible and check its audio and video. A healthy incoming-stream status does not by itself prove that playback is correct on every device or network.
YouTube advises operators to preview before going live, test important events, and continuously monitor audio and video quality. Its guidance also recommends checking that an event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices. YouTube streaming tips.
What Live Control Room can—and cannot—tell you
For encoder streams, YouTube documents stream status and error messages, along with metrics such as concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, average view duration, reactions, and reminders set. Which metrics appear can vary by stream type. Use status and error messages to investigate ingestion or stream-health issues; use the viewer-facing watch page to check playback.

Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics are not interchangeable. YouTube says Analytics is based on the video ID and is processed and despammed; its figures measure different things from Live Control Room. Do not treat an audience metric as proof that every viewer has uninterrupted playback. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.

Choose the right remote check

Use OBS WebSocket only when you need OBS control
OBS WebSocket can help if you need an external tool to control scenes or sources, but it does not provide a remote playback monitor. OBS says WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28. If you enable it, require authentication and keep the password private. OBS expressly recommends password protection against unauthorized control in its Remote Control Guide.
If you need to see or operate the entire streaming computer, remote desktop software is a separate option. It is not necessary just to check YouTube’s stream-health dashboard, and the setup and security requirements depend on the remote-access product and network you choose.

Account for latency when checking playback
Latency is the time between capture by the encoder or camera and appearance on the stream. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. A watch page viewed remotely may therefore be behind OBS; a delay alone does not mean OBS has stopped or that playback is broken. YouTube’s latency guidance.

Common monitoring problems
- The dashboard reports an error or unhealthy stream: Read the specific Live Control Room status and error message. That is the relevant place to investigate YouTube ingest and stream health while OBS remains running.
- The dashboard looks healthy, but playback is wrong: Check the public watch page on a separate device, including audio and video. The incoming feed’s health does not establish that every playback device is working correctly.
- The remote watch page is behind OBS: Allow for stream latency before deciding playback has failed; lower latency can also mean more buffering.
- You need to change an OBS scene remotely: Use a compatible OBS WebSocket client for control, not as a video monitor, and protect access with a password.
- You need the full OBS interface: Consider remote desktop access as a distinct option, with security practices appropriate to the software and network.
