To stream a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg and NVIDIA NVENC, put the clips in an FFmpeg concat manifest, loop that input, encode it with h264_nvenc, and send the output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. First verify that your FFmpeg build and NVIDIA GPU support NVENC; then test the stream privately and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream health.

What you need before building the command

  • An installed FFmpeg build that lists h264_nvenc as an available encoder.
  • An NVIDIA GPU and driver combination that supports NVENC for your chosen output. The GPU brand alone does not guarantee compatibility with your installed FFmpeg build.
  • Video files arranged in the intended playlist order. A concat manifest is simplest when the clips have compatible streams; mismatched resolutions, frame rates, codecs, or audio layouts may require normalization or a concat-filter workflow.
  • A YouTube Live stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, with its ingest server URL and stream key.
  • A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the outgoing stream. Choose output quality to fit both your source and available upload capacity.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264 as a supported video codec and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.

Check that FFmpeg exposes NVENC

Run these checks in a terminal or command prompt:

  1. ffmpeg -version — confirm FFmpeg runs and note the installed build.
  2. ffmpeg -encoders — look for h264_nvenc in the encoder list. If it is absent, this binary cannot use the H.264 NVENC encoder, even if the computer has an NVIDIA GPU.

If the encoder is missing or fails at startup, check the FFmpeg build, GPU support, and NVIDIA driver before attempting a long broadcast. The available evidence does not establish compatibility for a particular machine or GPU model.

Build an ordered playlist manifest

Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt alongside your media or in a location you can reference. Put the following header first, then add one file entry for each clip in playback order:

Replace the example names with valid paths to your files. Use paths relative to the manifest when practical; quote paths that contain spaces. If you use absolute paths or other paths rejected as unsafe, the command below includes -safe 0. Use that option only with a manifest you control, since it permits paths beyond the concat demuxer’s safe defaults.

When the concat demuxer is suitable

The concat demuxer reads a file list as one sequential input. It is a practical choice for ordered playback when the media streams are suitable for concatenation. It does not guarantee seamless transitions merely because the files appear in a list.

When clips differ

If clips have different dimensions, frame rates, codecs, or audio layouts, test their boundaries. Since the outgoing stream is encoded, the FFmpeg FAQ’s concat-filter approach is the relevant alternative when re-encoding and normalization are needed. A file-level concat protocol is a separate mechanism and should not be confused with the manifest-based demuxer.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address in its live stream settings guidance.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a shared script or publish it in a command example. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
  4. Use the RTMPS server URL and key supplied for that stream. The destination format is typically the server URL followed by the key; use the exact values and format provided by YouTube Studio.

Start the looping NVENC stream

This is a starting template, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or playlist. Replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key supplied for your stream:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v h264_nvenc -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

-re reads the input at its native playback rate, -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, and -f concat selects the manifest-based concat demuxer. The video encoder is NVIDIA H.264 NVENC, audio is AAC at 128 Kbps, and FLV is the output container used for this RTMP-family ingest format. The example does not explicitly set output resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, or keyframe interval; choose those to match the source and YouTube’s guidance rather than assuming one value fits every stream.

Do not assume all FFmpeg versions accept every option in the same way. Confirm the command starts, inspect its output for errors, and test the actual playlist and hardware before relying on it for an extended broadcast.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for conventional SDR streaming include:

  • H.264 video, progressive scan, and square pixels.
  • Constant bitrate (CBR).
  • A two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio.

The supplied command sets AAC at 128 Kbps but does not specify an audio sample rate, channel layout, video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval. Set these deliberately for your files and stream. There is no single bitrate to prescribe without knowing the target resolution and frame rate. Also ensure that your upload connection can sustain the selected output; YouTube transcodes live streams for playback formats, but transcoding does not compensate for an unstable feed to YouTube.

Preview, go live, and monitor

  1. Run a private or unlisted test using representative clips, movement, and sound.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview for both moving video and audible audio. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview and use the Go live control if the workflow requires it.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during transmission and respond to warnings before making a public broadcast.
  4. When finished, stop the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the FFmpeg encoder as directed by the interface.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
h264_nvenc is unavailable The FFmpeg binary, GPU, or driver does not expose the encoder in this setup. Check ffmpeg -encoders, then verify the installed build, GPU, and NVIDIA driver support the encoder together.
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file A manifest path is invalid, the working directory differs from what you expect, or the path is rejected by safe-path handling. Check every file path and run FFmpeg from a known directory. Use -safe 0 only when the manifest is trusted and requires non-safe paths.
Playback breaks or changes abruptly between clips Input streams may differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, or audio layout. Inspect the clips and test transitions. Normalize incompatible inputs or use a concat-filter workflow that can re-encode them.
YouTube receives no signal or rejects the connection The ingest URL or key may be wrong, the key may not belong to the active stream, or the encoder may have failed. Copy the stream-specific URL and key again from YouTube Studio, check FFmpeg’s error output, and protect the key from accidental edits or disclosure.
Video arrives but audio is missing or incorrect A source may lack audio or use a layout that does not match the output. Test each playlist item’s audio and verify the preview before going public. Normalize audio where necessary.
Stream-health warnings or unstable ingest The outgoing feed may exceed reliable upload capacity or the connection may be unstable. Choose quality based on reliable upload capacity, run an upload speed test, and monitor YouTube’s health indicators during a representative test.

Keep the stream key and playlist operationally safe

  • Treat the key as a credential: keep it out of public repositories, shared logs, and screenshots; reset it if exposed.
  • Because the command line contains the destination credential, avoid placing a real key in a script or shell history that other users can read. A protected environment variable or private configuration approach may be safer, depending on the installed FFmpeg build.
  • Keep the playlist manifest and referenced media accessible for the full run. Renaming, moving, or deleting a listed file can interrupt playback.
  • For always-on broadcasts, test loop behavior, audio continuity, transitions, and recovery procedures before relying on the setup for a long session.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your aim is a continuous YouTube channel rather than operating FFmpeg on your own machine, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the stream plays your uploaded files, not a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.
