Use Playwright to open one URL in a fresh browser context for each mobile profile or viewport size, then save a screenshot for each run. Set the viewport before navigating so the page renders at the intended dimensions from the start. The example below captures the same page at several sizes and names each image with its dimensions.
Choose device profiles or viewport sizes
Start with the screen sizes your site needs to support or the widths relevant to a responsive review. A viewport-only test is suitable for checking layout at specific dimensions. When mobile-specific behavior matters, use a device profile: Playwright device settings can include viewport, screen size, user agent, device scale factor, mobile behavior, and touch support. A width by itself does not emulate all of those settings.
Playwright describes its device emulation as a way to test across browsers and emulate a real device; emulation is not a guarantee that every behavior will match a physical phone. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.
Capture the same URL at multiple sizes with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then save this as capture-sizes.js. It creates a new context for each size, sets the viewport before navigation, waits for the page to load, and saves a viewport screenshot. Replace the example URL with the page you want to inspect.

})();Run it with node capture-sizes.js. The output files are named shot-320x740.png, shot-375x812.png, and so on. This example uses explicit viewport dimensions rather than claiming to reproduce particular phone models.
Use device profiles when mobile behavior matters
For a profile-based capture, import Playwright’s device descriptors and use the desired profile to create the context. For example, a profile can provide device-specific settings such as touch support and user agent in addition to dimensions:

})();Use a profile name available in the installed Playwright version. If your test needs a custom size or scale factor, set or override those values explicitly. The Playwright Page API documentation explains viewport configuration and screenshot options.

Choose viewport or full-page screenshots
The sample saves only the visible viewport, which is useful for comparing the initial screen at each size. Set fullPage: true when the review needs the entire scrollable page; full-page images can be much taller and are not a substitute for checking the visible mobile viewport. Playwright documents both capture modes in its screenshot API.
Make captures repeatable
- Set the viewport before navigation, especially if the site changes layout during its initial render.
- Wait for application-specific content to settle.
networkidleis a reasonable starting point, but some sites keep network requests active; in those cases wait for a meaningful selector or a known delay instead. - Use the same browser version, operating environment, headless mode, and relevant settings when generating and reviewing baselines. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with the host OS, browser settings, hardware, headless mode, and other environment factors.
- Use filenames containing dimensions or profile names so each output can be identified and compared.

If the page’s DOM changes with its viewport, Percy advises configuring responsive DOM snapshots and taking snapshots at varying widths; use unique snapshot names. The output has the wrong layout
Confirm that the intended width and height were passed as the context viewport before navigation. If the layout depends on mobile user-agent or touch behavior, use a device profile rather than changing width alone.

The page is blank or missing content
Check whether the page requires authentication, consent, or client-side rendering. Replace the generic load condition with a wait for a selector that indicates the relevant content has appeared. A persistent background request can also prevent networkidle from resolving; use a more specific wait instead.
Captures differ between runs
Keep the browser and host environment consistent, and allow dynamic content such as animations or changing data to settle or be controlled before comparing screenshots. A baseline created under a different OS, browser configuration, or headless mode may differ even when the page code has not changed.

Set fullPage: true to capture the scrollable page. Keep it false when the test is specifically about what a visitor sees in the initial viewport.

The browser does not launch
Install the browser binaries for the Playwright package in the environment running the script, and make sure that environment allows the browser process to start. If running in CI, use the same supported browser setup for both baseline creation and later comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this to prove a site works on every real phone?
No. Automated browser emulation is useful for repeatable responsive checks, but it does not establish that every device-specific hardware or browser behavior matches a physical phone. Use real-device testing when that distinction is material.
Does Percy count multiple responsive widths as one screenshot?
No. Percy states that each responsive width counts as a separate screenshot against monthly usage.
