There is no universal best duration or memory setting: it depends on the clip length you need and the PC’s output, encoder, and workload. Test the stream and saved replay together before relying on them.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
OBS Replay Buffer continuously retains recent footage so you can save it after the moment has happened. It is a recording feature, separate from YouTube’s live ingest settings. It does not determine your stream’s bitrate, resolution, codec, or keyframe interval, and enabling it does not by itself save a replay: you also need to start the buffer and assign a save action.
The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide strongly recommends testing everything as thoroughly as possible before a first live stream. That matters especially for a loop-stream PC expected to run unattended: a successful brief setup check does not establish that a long run will remain healthy.
Set up the YouTube stream first
Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and connection, then follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the matching configuration. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec and output resolution/frame rate, so use the applicable row in YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated preset. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a speed test to check upload capacity; leave enough headroom for a stable connection rather than targeting its full measured upload rate.

YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not make an unstable or unsuitable signal at ingest acceptable. Send a representative test stream with the same loop content, audio, and motion you expect to use, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance was current as accessed on October 3, 2026; check it again when configuring because recommendations and interface labels can change.
Use OBS’s wizard as a starting point
The OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard considers intended use, computer resources, and network conditions, making it a useful starting point for the live output. It is not a substitute for testing the actual loop and Replay Buffer load together.

Enable Replay Buffer and choose a clip window
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. Depending on output mode and OBS release, available controls may differ.
- Set Maximum Replay Time to the longest recent segment you realistically need to recover. Do not treat a particular duration as an official recommendation: the OBS documentation does not prescribe one universal value.
- Review OBS’s displayed estimated memory use or Maximum Memory control if shown. The required memory depends on the selected duration and the way the current configuration handles the buffer; there is no blanket RAM allocation suitable for every PC.
- Choose a recording path with adequate free disk space and a filename convention that makes saved clips easy to identify. OBS documents the Recording Path setting in its Standard Recording Output Guide. No particular external drive is established as necessary.
The desired replay duration is a recovery-window choice: decide how far back you might need to save, then verify that the installed OBS build produces a clip of the expected length. A longer window can involve more resource use; increasing memory alone is not a proven fix for encoder overload or dropped frames.
Assign and test the save hotkey
- Open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find Save Replay Buffer and assign a key combination that does not conflict with another OBS action or your operating system.
- Apply the settings, start the Replay Buffer, and run a test using representative loop footage.
- Press the hotkey after the footage you want to retain has entered the buffer. Open the resulting file and check its location, duration, video, and audio.
If the keypress appears to do nothing, confirm that Replay Buffer is enabled and running, that the save action has a hotkey, and that the destination is writable and has free space.

Start the stream and buffer as separate functions
Start the Replay Buffer and the YouTube stream, then verify that each is doing its job: the stream is healthy at YouTube and a test hotkey creates a playable replay. OBS documents separate launch parameters, --startstreaming and --startreplaybuffer, for starting these functions. See the OBS Launch Parameters reference and confirm the behavior for your operating system and installed release before using them in startup automation.
Those parameters are building blocks, not a 24/7 reliability system. They do not establish recovery from a power cut, network outage, expired session, or OBS crash. For unattended operation, monitor OBS dropped frames and encoding performance, YouTube stream health, disk space, and whether replay files are actually being created. The required monitoring and recovery arrangement depends on the PC and operating conditions.

How to find a stable configuration
There is no evidence-backed exact preset for an unspecified computer. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and whether recording uses a separate encoder all affect workload. OBS notes that separate recording settings can consume additional resources in its recording guide. Minimum system requirements alone do not guarantee that a particular stream and replay workload will run smoothly.
- Set the YouTube output using the current guidance for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Choose only the replay window you need and note OBS’s memory estimate or limit, if available.
- Run a sustained test with the actual loop and audio, while checking OBS performance and YouTube stream health.
- Save a replay near the end of the test and inspect its length, playback, audio, and destination.
- If the test shows dropped frames, encoding overload, or a replay shorter than expected, reduce workload or revisit the output and replay settings, then repeat the test.
Save reproducible settings as an OBS Profile when appropriate. Profiles include Stream, Video, and Output settings; see the OBS Profiles guide. Profile documentation was published January 14, 2022, and OBS interface details may have changed since then.

Troubleshooting common failures
