Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter rises during a YouTube loop, first lower the video bitrate in Settings → Output so it fits your connection’s stable upload capacity. Then, if you use Windows, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing under Settings → Advanced → Network. Keep Bind to IP set to Default; use IPv4 Only only as a temporary diagnostic. These settings are not universal fixes: network-dropped frames usually mean the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
First, confirm which OBS counter is increasing
This guide is for network-dropped frames. OBS drops frames when the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; as the OBS Project Help Portal puts it, “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” That symptom is different from rendering lag or encoding lag, which point to work OBS cannot complete in time on the computer. Viewer-side buffering is different again: the stream may reach YouTube while some viewers’ connections struggle to play it.
Check OBS’s Statistics window while streaming and identify the counter that is rising before changing settings. Encoder or rendering settings are not the first thing to adjust for a network-only problem. For background on the distinction between dropped frames and viewer buffering, see the OBS Project’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide (published 2021-06-09).
Fix the likely cause in a reversible order
1. Check stable upload capacity and reduce bitrate if needed
Run a speed test that reports upload speed; download speed does not show whether the outgoing connection can sustain a live stream. Consider other people, devices, and applications sharing the connection, and leave capacity for ordinary variation. OBS gives about 75% of total upload speed as a useful starting point for streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. Neither is a guarantee: actual upload throughput can vary, and a busy shared connection may need a lower target.

In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate, then test the loop under conditions similar to the real stream. Lowering bitrate can stop a stream from exceeding reliable upload capacity, but it reduces video quality. Choose a target with YouTube’s codec, resolution, and frame-rate guidance in mind rather than treating a single bitrate as right for every format.
2. Compare the configured stream with YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder table gives recommended H.264 video bitrates of 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. The same table lists 12, 10, 6, and 6 Mbps respectively for AV1 or H.265 in those formats. These are encoder recommendations from YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”; the page’s publication year was not stated. They are not measurements of your upload speed. Your stable upload path still needs enough capacity and headroom for the stream.

Use the complete YouTube table for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations, including its minimum bitrate settings. YouTube’s Streaming tips explain the upload-bandwidth headroom guidance and the need to allow for shared network use.
3. Test a different ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select another server if one is available. Test the same stream again. A different result can indicate that the route to one ingest server is part of the problem, but it does not repair an unstable home connection or insufficient upload capacity.

4. Test OBS network options on Windows
Open Settings → Advanced → Network. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (published 2024-09-30) recommends testing the following Windows options:
- Enable Enable network optimizations.
- Enable Enable TCP pacing.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default.
- If the problem remains, temporarily test IP Family → IPv4 Only. If it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
These are troubleshooting tests, not settings that fix every dropped-frame problem. The available options may differ by operating system.

5. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce network-dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying connection issue, and the lower bitrate means lower video quality. Consider it a mitigation when you need the stream to continue through congestion, not a substitute for finding why the connection is unstable.
6. Check Wi-Fi, software, drivers, and network hardware
If bitrate and OBS settings do not explain the problem, isolate other parts of the upload path:

- Wi-Fi: OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If possible, test with Ethernet before buying equipment; a cable cannot resolve upstream congestion or ISP routing problems.
- VPN, security, or prioritization software: Temporarily test whether a VPN, security program, or network-prioritization utility is interfering with OBS’s connection.
- Drivers and physical network: Check network drivers, cables, modem, router, and other network devices. Restarting the modem and router may help where a local network issue is suspected.
- ISP or route congestion: If the issue persists after local checks, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing outside your home may be involved.
Test the loop as it will actually run
A short, idle test may not expose the conditions that cause a long-running loop to drop frames. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. For a loop, test the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, network use, and ingest route planned for the live stream. If other people or devices use the connection during the intended broadcast period, include that shared use in the test.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are running a YouTube loop to keep a channel live, StreamNeo is a cloud service that plays uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream.
