To reduce OBS CPU use during a nonstop YouTube stream, first identify whether the bottleneck is CPU encoding, scene rendering, or another workload. Then test a supported hardware encoder if software encoding is the problem, simplify resource-heavy scenes, and lower output resolution or frame rate only if the content allows. Change one setting at a time and run a representative test stream; bitrate alone is primarily an upload and delivery setting, not a reliable CPU fix.

Diagnose what is using resources before changing settings

High CPU use does not prove that the CPU encoder is the only cause. OBS must also composite scene sources, while a game or other applications may compete for system and GPU resources. OBS distinguishes rendering lag from encoding overload, and GPU overload can stop OBS keeping up even if a game appears to run smoothly. [OBS troubleshooting]

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and note the active encoder. Record the output resolution and frame rate as well.
  2. During a representative stream or test, note CPU use and check OBS’s View > Stats panel for rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames. Treat these as different symptoms rather than assuming every issue is CPU encoding.
  3. Keep the same scene, content, and stream conditions as you test changes. Alter one setting at a time so you can tell what helped and whether output quality or stability suffered.

OBS says CPU requirements vary considerably with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a baseline, but it does not establish that a setup will remain stable for every long stream. [OBS system requirements]

Try a supported hardware encoder if encoding overload is the problem

A hardware encoder can move video encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component, if your computer has a compatible one. OBS documents options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD encoders, Intel Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox; availability depends on the hardware and operating system. [OBS hardware encoding]

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open Settings > Output and check the Streaming encoder options. Select only an encoder actually supported by your system.
  2. Run a test using the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and representative motion you intend to use. Check both OBS’s stats and the resulting video for image quality and stability.
  3. If the hardware option gives unacceptable quality or causes instability, return to the previous encoder and investigate scene load or output settings instead.

Do not switch blindly. Encoder generations differ, and older hardware encoders can trade image quality for performance; modern hardware encoders can provide good quality with little performance impact, but results depend on the device and workload. Compare the actual output at your intended bitrate before relying on the change. [OBS hardware encoding]

When an upgrade might be relevant

If testing confirms that CPU encoding is the limiting factor and no suitable hardware encoder is available, a GPU with a supported NVENC encoder is one possible upgrade category—not a universal requirement. OBS’s guide describes NVENC support on Windows and Linux for GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series Maxwell or newer, and recommends a Turing-generation encoder for best results in that guide. Check the exact GPU, computer, operating system, drivers, power supply, and case before buying; compatibility and image quality vary by setup. [OBS hardware encoding]

Simplify scenes and sources

Each source in an OBS scene uses resources, and some sources may continue to use resources while hidden. The OBS troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary source work; it does not rank these changes by measured savings. Test them individually. [OBS troubleshooting]

  • Remove unused sources and simplify scenes and scene collections. Keep the active collection focused on the production you need.
  • Use capture and media sources at no higher resolution than the output requires.
  • Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. Temporarily disable script-heavy animated overlays to see whether they contribute to the issue.
  • For static artwork, try an OBS Image Source instead of a browser overlay when that suits the design.

Reduce output resolution or frame rate when the content permits

Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce workload, but it changes what viewers see. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps, and its CPU requirements vary with resolution and FPS. Choose based on the content: fast motion may benefit more from a higher frame rate, while a mostly static presentation may not need it. [OBS system requirements] [OBS overview]

OBS’s advanced recording guide lists veryfast as an x264 CPU Usage Preset in a recording baseline. That recording recommendation is not a universal YouTube streaming fix; encoder controls and quality tradeoffs depend on the configuration. [OBS advanced recording settings]

Set YouTube delivery parameters for the stream you need

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), supported codecs, and bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These ingest bitrate recommendations address delivery requirements, not CPU targets. Changing bitrate alone is therefore not a dependable way to reduce CPU use. Choose a compatible value that your upload can sustain and that fits your quality goal. [YouTube encoder settings]

For H.264, YouTube’s table lists these ingestion bitrate examples; the page does not display a publication date in the retrieved guidance:

Output Minimum Recommended
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube publishes separate bitrate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 figures to another codec. Test with representative motion and audio before going live, then monitor stream health during the event. [YouTube encoder settings]

Test changes and troubleshoot the remaining symptom

Use a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate, with the scenes, motion, and audio that resemble the planned broadcast. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream and recommends monitoring stream health during the event. [YouTube encoder settings]

Symptom What to check Next step
CPU is high and OBS reports encoding overload Whether the stream uses a software encoder, plus resolution and frame rate Test a compatible hardware encoder; if necessary, test lower output resolution or frame rate.
OBS reports rendering lag Scene complexity, source count and size, browser overlays, and GPU competition from games or other applications Remove or simplify sources one at a time and retest.
Dropped frames without clear encoding overload Upload capacity and YouTube stream health, alongside the selected codec and ingest bitrate Check whether the network can sustain the chosen delivery settings. Do not treat a bitrate change as a CPU optimization.
Hardware encoding looks worse or behaves inconsistently Encoder generation, selected settings, hardware support, and actual test output Compare against the previous encoder at the intended resolution and bitrate; revert if the result is not acceptable.

No cited guidance establishes a universal percentage of CPU saved by a specific OBS adjustment or a safe maximum nonstop runtime. Stability needs to be validated on the actual machine and workload rather than inferred from one setting or short test.
