To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a cloud desktop, run OBS Studio on the cloud machine, add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The cloud desktop must stay running and maintain a stable upload connection; looping a file does not automatically restart OBS or the broadcast after an interruption.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and able to livestream. If this is its first live broadcast, activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance covers channel access and restrictions.
- A prerecorded video file accessible from the cloud desktop, plus a cloud VM with a usable graphical desktop and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream settings.
- OBS Studio installed or available in the VM. OBS is free and open source; its Help Portal says it can be used commercially without restrictions.
Before choosing a VM, check how its graphical session behaves when you disconnect, whether the instance can be suspended or stopped, how to restart it after a reboot, and what storage and network charges apply. These details depend on the provider and configuration.
Set up YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a broadcast.
- Open the Live Control Room’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- If you scheduled the broadcast, leave the Live Control Room open so you can check its preview before making the event public.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the URL, key, and preview workflow. Its current live-streaming guidance lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; check YouTube’s page for the applicable limits and account conditions.
Configure the cloud desktop and OBS
Keep OBS running in the VM
Install or launch OBS in the desktop session on the cloud machine, and make sure the media file is stored somewhere that session can read. A remote disconnect is not the same as a VM shutdown, but session behavior varies by host and setup; confirm that OBS continues running as intended after you disconnect. Do not assume that OBS or the VM will recover automatically from a crash or restart.

Make a single video repeat
- In OBS, create or select a scene.
- In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, give the source a name, and select the video file available to the VM.
- In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS documents that the option is off by default and restarts the file after playback completes.
- Confirm the picture and audio in the OBS preview. Watch through the end of the file and into its next playback to check the boundary, including any pause, black frame, or audio gap you would not want viewers to hear.
The media-file controls are documented in OBS’s Media Sources guide. The boundary check is a practical verification, not a guarantee of seamless playback.
Make a playlist repeat
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed; for 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit VLC version. Check the playlist order and confirm that the transition from the last item to the first behaves as intended.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if that option is available, or choose the custom server option and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- Choose output settings appropriate to your video and the VM’s sustained upload capacity. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point; there is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every source and connection.
- Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and inspect the preview, picture, and sound.
- For a scheduled broadcast, press Go live in the Live Control Room once the preview is ready. Check the public watch page from a separate viewer session if practical.
YouTube recommends previewing an encoder feed before the broadcast, and the YouTube Live Streaming API overview describes using a monitor stream to test content. You can use Studio without using the API.
Keep the stream running and plan for interruptions
OBS’s Loop option repeats the media source; it does not supervise the OBS process, restart the VM, or guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will continue after a failure. Plan how you will respond if OBS closes, the VM reboots or suspends, the network drops, the stream configuration changes, or YouTube ends the broadcast.

- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicator and the Live Control Room status. OBS notes that rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to YouTube or insufficient capacity for the selected bitrate.
- If frames drop, check the VM’s network stability and available upload capacity. Reduce output demands if needed, then confirm the preview is stable before relying on the stream.
- After an OBS crash or VM restart, verify that OBS is open, the media source is playing, and the broadcast is actually receiving video before considering the stream restored.
For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says the broadcast will be automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete replay for a single stream lasting longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s encoder guide when planning a longer session.
Understand content and monetization limits
A stream that technically loops successfully is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies, updated July 15, 2025, call for original, authentic content and say repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. The policy applies to live streams; looping alone does not determine the outcome. Copyright and other rights to the video and audio still matter, so use material you own or have permission to stream.
