Usually, leave “Use hardware decoding when available” off unless a controlled test on your streaming PC shows a clear benefit. OBS lists the Media Source option as off by default. It asks a supported GPU to decode certain media files; it is not a general 24/7 reliability switch, and available documentation does not establish that enabling it improves uptime.
What “Use hardware decoding when available” does
In a Media Source’s properties, this option lets the GPU decode certain supported media formats when it has the appropriate built-in decoder. OBS describes the setting as: “Sets the GPU to perform hardware decoding on certain file types if your GPU has the appropriate hardware decoder built-in.” OBS lists it as off by default. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Media Source can play video files such as MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio files including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. The file extension by itself does not establish that the GPU supports decoding the file’s actual codec and profile.
Decoding is not encoding
Hardware decoding concerns playback of a source file inside OBS. Hardware encoding is a separate choice for compressing the outgoing stream. Turning on Media Source decoding does not, by itself, select a hardware encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Should you enable it for a 24/7 stream?
Enable it only if your GPU supports the source’s actual format and a representative test shows a useful improvement without playback, rendering or stability problems. Otherwise, keep the default setting. There is no universal rule for continuous operation: the reviewed OBS and FFmpeg documentation does not provide a general uptime comparison or show that this option makes a 24/7 stream more reliable.
Potential benefit—and why it may not help
Using a supported GPU decoder may reduce CPU work. But hardware acceleration is not automatically faster. The FFmpeg documentation on hardware acceleration cautions that acceleration may have no effect when unsupported, that some methods aimed at playback may not outperform software decoding on modern CPUs, and that copying decoded frames from GPU memory to system memory can reduce performance.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
OBS also needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the GPU is already under rendering pressure, assigning it media decoding work may not improve the whole stream. Judge the result using playback and OBS performance—not CPU usage alone. OBS discusses rendering lag and GPU load in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
What is known about failures
An OBS GitHub issue report describes a freeze and crash on exit in one HEVC SRT/RIST case with hardware decoding enabled. That single report is a warning to test your own setup, not evidence of a general failure rate or a prediction for local files, other codecs, hardware or software releases.

How to compare both settings on your setup
- Identify the source format. Check the file’s codec and profile, then verify that your GPU, driver and operating system support decoding it. A filename ending in .mp4 or .mkv is not enough to confirm decoder support.
- Use the same real stream workload. Test with the scenes, Media Sources and output settings you intend to run continuously. Change only the hardware-decoding checkbox between runs so the comparison is meaningful.
- Check playback and looping. Watch for freezes, stutter, missed starts or failures when a source reaches the end and loops. A lower CPU reading is not a useful trade if playback becomes unreliable.
- Observe CPU, GPU and OBS performance. Look for CPU headroom as well as GPU load and OBS rendering or encoding problems. Consider whether the GPU is already busy compositing the scene.
- Review logs and stability over a representative run. Check OBS logs for relevant errors and keep the setting only if the observed benefit persists without new problems. No single test duration or universal benchmark is established for every 24/7 system.
This is a practical comparison method, not a published OBS guarantee. Driver and operating-system compatibility can affect the result.
Troubleshooting hardware-decoding problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The checkbox makes no difference | The codec or profile may not be supported, or acceleration may not help this workload. | Verify GPU decoder support for the actual file. Compare against software decoding and leave the option off if there is no measurable benefit. |
| Playback stutters or a source does not loop cleanly | Check playback continuity, source format support, GPU load and logs. | Disable hardware decoding and compare under the same scene and output conditions. Keep the mode that plays reliably. |
| OBS shows rendering problems after enabling it | The GPU may have limited headroom because scene compositing and media decoding both use GPU resources. | Compare GPU load and OBS rendering behavior with decoding off; do not treat reduced CPU use as success if rendering degrades. |
| OBS freezes or crashes | Note the source format, protocol, driver and whether the issue occurs with the option enabled; inspect logs. | Turn the option off and retest. One reported HEVC SRT/RIST case does not establish a general failure rate, but your own reproducible failure is a reason not to use that mode in the current setup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping an OBS PC running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the video, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
