For most 24/7 YouTube playlists, start with a compatible hardware encoder already in your computer. OBS says hardware encoding moves work off the CPU, which can leave more processing capacity for the rest of the system. But it is not an uptime guarantee, and older hardware encoders can deliver lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Test both options with your actual playlist and settings before committing to a long broadcast.

Plan the archive separately: YouTube warns that a live stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, make and monitor a local backup rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive.

What hardware and software encoding change

With hardware encoding, a dedicated component in compatible hardware—such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV or Apple VideoToolbox—handles video encoding. OBS’s included x264 encoder instead uses the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work away from the CPU. That can matter during an always-on stream, but it does not establish that a particular computer will run continuously without problems.

Image quality depends on the encoder generation, bitrate, output settings and content. OBS cautions that older hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset; x264 can also offer better quality per bitrate in some cases, at the cost of greater CPU processing. No encoder is automatically best for every machine or playlist.

Which should you use for a 24/7 YouTube playlist?

Consideration Hardware encoding Software encoding (x264)
Where encoding happens A dedicated encoding component in supported hardware; OBS says this reduces the encoding workload on the CPU. The CPU performs the encode, and demanding settings can increase its load.
Quality at a constrained bitrate Can be very good, but results vary by generation; OBS notes older encoders may produce lower image quality than x264 veryfast at the same bitrate. Can offer better quality per bitrate in some cases, with a greater real-time processing burden.
Compatibility and performance Depends on operating system, hardware family and encoder generation. A listed encoder does not prove that the full system can sustain your chosen stream. x264 is included in OBS, but whether your CPU can sustain the selected output depends on its workload and settings.
Practical starting point Try it first if OBS exposes a compatible hardware encoder on your system. Compare it if you have CPU capacity or want to assess image quality at your target bitrate.

Do not buy a GPU just because the stream is continuous. First test the encoders your current computer supports with the actual playlist, output resolution, frame rate and scene. OBS notes that system requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity; basic compatibility does not guarantee successful streaming.

Set up OBS for YouTube ingest

Choose a codec and output mode that YouTube accepts and OBS offers for your system. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check the current settings in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide, since recommended bitrates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate.

Example: 1080p at 30 fps

YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at the same output. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain them. Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec and confirm that your upload connection has sufficient capacity.

Leave network headroom

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. That spare capacity helps accommodate fluctuations and other network use; a nominal speed-test result alone does not establish a reliable continuous connection. Prefer a stable connection, test before going live, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test the real workload before leaving it live

  1. Build the actual playlist scene. Include the media sources, overlays and other elements you intend to leave running. Scene complexity affects system requirements.
  2. Compare available encoders. In OBS, check the output encoder options available on your computer, then test hardware encoding and x264 using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Do not infer sustained performance from the computer’s model name alone.
  3. Check YouTube’s ingest health. Start a test broadcast and review stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly advises testing before a live stream.
  4. Watch the computer and connection under sustained load. Look for encoder overload, dropped frames, instability or interruptions, and verify that the upload connection retains the recommended headroom. A short successful test is useful, but does not prove uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
  5. If keeping an archive, monitor the local recording. Confirm the file continues to grow and that the recording remains playable. YouTube also advises checking local archive progress when using a backup.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour live stream?

Do not count on it. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete VOD, make a local recording or use another preservation plan you have tested. Splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions may be an option, but test the schedule and archive workflow you intend to use. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • OBS reports encoding overload: The selected encoder and settings may exceed available processing capacity. Test the compatible hardware encoder if available, or reduce the output resolution, frame rate or encoding workload, then retest the full scene.
  • The hardware encoder looks worse at the same bitrate: Encoder generations differ. Compare the result with x264 at the same output and bitrate; if the CPU can sustain it, x264 may offer better quality per bitrate in some cases.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check the upload connection and total bitrate, preserve the recommended bandwidth headroom, and review YouTube’s health messages. Test the connection and ingest settings again before relying on a long session.
  • The automatic archive is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use a monitored local recording or another tested archive plan when the full recording matters.
  • A compatible encoder is listed, but the stream still fails: Compatibility alone is not a system-performance guarantee. Resolution, frame rate, scene complexity and the rest of the workload all matter; validate the complete configuration.
