To capture a rendered website screenshot in a Make scenario, use HTTP > Make a request to call an API that actually renders webpages into images. An ordinary HTTP request that fetches a page URL is not a screenshot. Add the target URL and capture options in the provider’s documented format, store the API key in Make’s credential field where possible, and route the result according to whether the API returns JSON, a redirect, or image data.

Choose how Make will create the screenshot

Make’s HTTP app (Version 4) includes Make a request, Download a file, and Resolve URL. The request module is useful when your chosen screenshot service has no native Make action or you need custom request settings. A screenshot-rendering API is essential: a standard request to a webpage retrieves an HTTP response and does not, by itself, render the page in a browser.

Make also lists a native Create a Screenshot of a URL action in its HTML/CSS to Image integration directory. A GetScreenshot app page lists Take Screenshot. These may be simpler if they fit your requirements; confirm current availability and follow the provider’s setup instructions. The GetScreenshot page notes that some of its documentation is AI-generated and may contain mistakes, so check the vendor’s current documentation for app-specific details.

For a custom HTTP setup, compare providers on their Make integration, authentication method, response type, supported formats and capture controls, timeout and failure behavior, pricing, usage limits, retention, and terms. These details vary by service; the example below illustrates one documented API contract, not a universal standard.

Set up a screenshot API request in Make

  1. Add the HTTP request module

In your scenario, add HTTP > Make a request. Enter the screenshot service’s HTTPS endpoint and choose the HTTP method the service documents. Make supports HTTPS URLs and configurable methods, headers, query parameters, and body content types.

  2. Configure authentication securely

Use Make’s dedicated Credentials field for authentication when the service supports it. Make recommends this instead of putting authentication details in generic headers or query parameters. Never publish or log a live API key. If the service only documents a different authentication method, follow its instructions while keeping the secret out of scenario logs and shared content where possible.

  3. Map the target URL and capture options

Provide the page to capture and the settings supported by your chosen API. For example, Screenshot API documents POST /api/v1/screenshot with a JSON body containing a required url. It documents formats including PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF, plus optional viewport dimensions. Those names and options belong to that API; do not assume another provider accepts the same fields.

For a JSON request, Make lets you use a mapped data structure or a raw JSON string. A data structure is often easier to map from earlier modules and automatically escapes reserved JSON characters. Select the provider’s required content type and place each optional capture setting in the location specified by its API reference.

  4. Choose the response route

Inspect the provider’s response documentation before adding downstream modules. Screenshot API returns JSON by default and documents a redirect=1 option that instead returns a 302 redirect to the image or PDF. If a JSON response includes an image URL, map it into HTTP > Download a file; that module fetches a file from a specified URL and exposes the file data to later modules. If the provider returns image bytes or a redirect, handle that response according to both provider and Make documentation.

  5. Set parsing, timeout, and error behavior

Make can parse responses so their fields become available for mapping after a module run. Run the module once with a known test URL, inspect the output, and map the actual image URL or file data rather than assuming a response shape. Set a timeout appropriate to the provider’s render time; Make documents a range of 1 to 300 seconds. Decide whether the scenario should stop on HTTP 4xx or 5xx responses, and route errors deliberately instead of treating an error response as an image. Make rejects unverified self-signed certificates.

Example request and response flow

Screenshot API’s documented pattern shows why both the request and response need attention: send JSON to its screenshot endpoint with the required target URL, then either parse the default JSON response or use its documented redirect option. In Make, the precise body, token placement, output mapping, and subsequent download depend on the API contract you choose. Test one successful capture and one failure path before enabling a scenario on a schedule or with live inputs.

  • JSON containing a URL: parse the response and pass the mapped URL to Download a file.
  • Redirect to a file: use the provider’s documented redirect behavior and verify how the Make request handles it before mapping downstream.
  • Direct file response: confirm how the module exposes the returned data, then map that data to the next module that needs the image or PDF.

Keep the scenario reliable and control costs

Rendered captures can take longer than ordinary page fetches because the service must load and render the target. Set a timeout within Make’s documented 1–300-second range that accommodates the chosen service, while keeping failed requests visible. Use the provider’s status codes and response fields to distinguish a capture failure from a successful image response.

Troubleshoot common Make screenshot failures

  • The result is HTML or page text, not an image. The request may be fetching the webpage directly rather than calling a screenshot-rendering endpoint. Use a service endpoint that explicitly performs browser capture.
  • The request returns an authentication error. Check the provider’s required authentication scheme and confirm the Make credential is attached to the correct module. Avoid moving a secret into a URL unless the provider requires it.
  • The body is rejected or the target URL is missing. Verify the provider’s method, content type, required field names, and JSON structure. Field names from one screenshot API are not a standard shared by others.
  • The next module cannot find the image. Inspect the response after a test run. If it is JSON, map its actual image URL; if it is a file or redirect, configure the downstream handling for that response type instead.
  • The scenario times out. Increase the module timeout within Make’s supported range if the provider’s render time warrants it, and check the provider’s guidance for slow pages. A longer timeout does not fix an invalid endpoint or a failed capture.
  • The API returns 4xx or 5xx responses. Inspect the provider’s error response, request fields, authentication, and target URL. Configure Make’s stop-on-error setting and error route so failures do not pass through as successful image data.
  • A certificate error appears. Make does not accept unverified self-signed certificates. Use an HTTPS endpoint with a certificate Make can verify.

Or skip the browser setup:

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. One GET request with a URL returns a clean PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its documented endpoint is https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response behavior.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

To call it from Make, configure HTTP > Make a request with method GET, URL https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot, and query parameters access_key and url; store the key in Make’s credential field where applicable. Map the result according to the response details in the API documentation.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also has an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
