Selenium IDE records interactions with a web application and plays them back as browser tests. It is useful for quickly reproducing a bug, exploring a workflow, or learning Selenium commands. For a maintainable regression suite that must scale across browsers and environments, Selenium’s guidance points to WebDriver instead.
What Selenium IDE does
Selenium is “an umbrella project for a range of tools and libraries that enable and support the automation of web browsers,” according to the Selenium project documentation. Selenium IDE is its record-and-playback tool: interact with a site, review and edit the resulting steps, then replay them to check the workflow. The official project describes it as a way to develop test cases and learn Selenium syntax.
The project homepage frames IDE as a fit for quick bug-reproduction scripts and automation-aided exploratory testing. Recording makes it fast to get a first version of a test, but it does not guarantee that the result is reliable or ready for a production regression suite.
How a recorded test becomes useful
- Record: perform the browser interactions that reproduce the behavior or exercise the workflow.
- Review: inspect the generated steps and revise them where the recorded sequence does not express the check you actually need.
- Replay: run the test again in the IDE to see whether the workflow still behaves as expected.
- Choose where it belongs: keep a small, useful check in the IDE’s own workflow, or export/integrate it into code when it must become part of a broader automation suite.
The current Selenium IDE repository describes an Electron application, a playback runtime, a Node runner, an experimental CLI, and exporters from .side projects to C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. The official command-line runner documentation describes running saved projects and exporting code. Because runner setup and browser support can vary by release, check the current documentation and repository release information before following version-specific commands.

Selenium IDE or WebDriver?

These are complementary tools rather than interchangeable versions of the same workflow. IDE lowers the effort to begin a test; WebDriver is the programmatic route when the suite needs deliberate structure, integration, and scale. Selenium’s project homepage makes this distinction between quick IDE scripts and robust WebDriver suites.
What changed in Selenium IDE 4
The project moved away from the browser-extension model to an Electron application. In its v4 wiki, the maintainers explained the change in terms of practical limits in the older extension workflow: handling browser-level features such as alerts and cookie clearing, extending behavior across local and remote playback, and keeping up with extension security changes. The wiki also described Manifest V3 restrictions as a problem for core commands.

The wiki’s Manifest V2 removal date of January 2024 was a historical rationale written in 2023, not a current policy update. The architectural change is useful context when choosing an installed version, but it is not a promise of a future roadmap or a guarantee that every old extension workflow behaves the same in the current application.
Limitations to check before relying on a test
- File access: Selenium IDE’s official FAQ says a browser extension cannot access the file system. Do not assume an extension can automate local-file interactions like a desktop program; confirm that the action is supported in the version you use.
- Browser-level actions: the v4 wiki describes limitations in the former extension architecture for some browser-level behavior and custom logic. Verify the exact action in your installed version and browser.
- Test resilience: a recorded sequence may be tied to page details that change. Review and maintain its steps rather than treating a successful recording as proof of a robust regression test.
- Compatibility and setup: the older IDE documentation includes browser-extension information, but it should not be treated as a current compatibility matrix. Consult current releases and documentation for supported browsers and runner setup.
