Use Selenium to open the page and save its screenshot, then use cron to run that script at the times you choose. The reliable setup is to install the browser and Selenium components separately, run Chrome headlessly when there is no desktop, use absolute paths and a writable output directory, and capture the job’s output so failures are diagnosable.
How the scheduled screenshot works
Selenium performs the browser work: it navigates to a URL, waits for the page state you need, and writes an image file. Cron is only the scheduler; it does not install or manage the browser. This guide uses Python and Chrome on a Unix-like host. Cron syntax and logging details vary by operating system and cron implementation.
You need a Python Selenium binding, a supported browser, and the browser driver needed for your setup. Selenium’s getting-started documentation explains the components, and Selenium Manager can assist with browser-driver management. Check the instructions for your selected Selenium and browser versions before installing.
Write and test the Selenium screenshot script
Save the following as /home/alex/bin/site_screenshot.py, replacing the example URL and paths. The example uses an explicit wait for the document to reach its complete state; if the page’s meaningful content loads later, wait for a page-specific element instead.

driver.quit()Selenium’s Chrome guide lists --headless=new among commonly used Chrome arguments. Confirm the applicable options for your installed browser version in the Chrome documentation. The Python API documents saving the current window as a PNG with save_screenshot and recommends using a full path; the official example uses driver.save_screenshot('./image.png') (Python WebDriver API).
- Install the Selenium Python binding, Chrome, and the driver or driver-management support required by your setup. Cron will not provide these for you.
- Run the script manually as the same account that will own the crontab:
/absolute/path/to/python /home/alex/bin/site_screenshot.py. Use the interpreter from the environment where Selenium is installed. - Confirm that the image exists at
/home/alex/screenshots/example.pngand that it contains the expected page. Confirm that the crontab owner can write to the destination directory. - Adjust the wait condition for the page. A completed document load does not guarantee that content rendered later by JavaScript, lazy loading, or a consent flow is ready for capture; use a relevant selector or a suitable explicit delay when needed.
Schedule the script with cron
A user crontab entry has five schedule fields—minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week—followed by the command. For example, to capture every day at 06:30, add this line to the crontab of the account that should run the job:

Replace /absolute/path/to/python with the interpreter’s full path, such as the one reported by which python in the intended environment. Edit the user’s crontab with crontab -e; do not put a user-crontab line unchanged into a system-wide crontab.
In the Debian systemd-cron implementation, entries in /etc/crontab and /etc/cron.d include a username between the schedule and command, unlike a per-user crontab line. The same manual documents the five fields and environment settings such as SHELL and PATH; settings apply to subsequent commands in that file. Make cron’s environment deliberate
A cron job may not inherit the environment of your interactive login shell. Use absolute paths for the interpreter, script, output, and log; explicitly define any environment variables the script requires. If you use a virtual environment, point cron directly to its Python executable. In the cited Debian systemd-cron implementation, a job runs as the owner of that user’s crontab; check your host’s documentation if using another implementation.
Check the first scheduled run
After the next scheduled time, inspect the image and the redirected log. Cron implementations differ in how job output is handled: it may be mailed, sent to a journal, or treated according to host configuration. The Debian manual documents output behavior for that implementation, but the exact log or mail destination is host-dependent.

Why Selenium fails when it runs from cron
If a script succeeds in a terminal but not on schedule, check these causes in order:
- Wrong crontab or user: confirm you edited the intended account’s crontab and that the account can access the script, browser, and output locations.
- Schedule or timezone: verify the five fields and the host’s timezone. Cron’s schedule is interpreted by the host’s configuration, not by the time you happen to expect.
- Relative or incorrect paths: cron may start in a different working directory. Use absolute paths to Python, the script, screenshot, and log.
- Missing environment values: define required variables explicitly rather than assuming a shell profile was loaded. Check
PATHand any variables your browser or script depends on. - Browser or driver unavailable: verify that Chrome and the driver-management setup work for the job user. Cron does not install either component.
- No graphical session: on a host without a desktop session, configure Chrome for headless execution and confirm the argument against the installed browser version.
- Output permission denied: create the destination directory and grant the job user write access; use a full screenshot path.
- Page not ready or navigation failed: inspect captured standard output and error, then adjust the wait for the content the screenshot requires. A timeout or failed load should be handled explicitly if the job must report a clear failure.
When one machine is enough—and when to scale
A local WebDriver script is the simplest arrangement for a modest number of recurring captures on one host. If you need execution distributed across machines or multiple browser environments, Selenium Grid is an option; Selenium’s downloads page states, “The Selenium Server is needed in order to run Remote Selenium WebDriver (Grid)” (Selenium Downloads). Grid adds setup and operational complexity, so use it when local execution does not meet the coverage or workload requirements. The cited sources do not establish comparative performance or cost figures.

Yes. The example uses Python, but Selenium has multiple language bindings. The scheduling approach is the same: cron runs your script with the correct interpreter or runtime.
