Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo compare Selenium screenshots, capture the same page or element in repeatable browser conditions, then use an image-diff tool or visual-testing framework to compare the new image with an approved baseline. Selenium captures screenshots; it does not decide whether they match. Use exact pixel matching only when the rendering environment is controlled, and choose a documented tolerance when small rendering differences are expected.
What Selenium does—and what comparison requires
Selenium WebDriver can capture a screenshot of the current browsing context, and supported bindings and drivers can also capture an element. The screenshot is image data; comparison is a separate step. Your test must save or decode the baseline and current images, compare them under an explicit rule, and report or assert on the result.
Choose the capture scope to match the question your test is asking: a viewport or page capture for a broad layout check, or an element capture for a component whose appearance matters independently. Keep the capture scope consistent between baseline and current runs.
Make the baseline and current capture comparable
Most noisy visual tests are caused not by Selenium itself, but by differences in the conditions that produced the images. Keep these stable wherever possible:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Browser and version: use the same browser build and settings for both captures.
- Operating system and rendering environment: use the same OS or container, fonts, hardware conditions, and headless setting. Playwright advises running screenshot tests in the same environment that generated the baselines because these factors can affect rendering. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.
- Viewport and scale: use the same viewport dimensions and device scale factor. A dimension mismatch should prompt investigation, not silent resizing.
- Application state: use stable test data, time-dependent values, and content that does not change between runs.
- Readiness: wait for navigation, expected content, and fonts to load. Stop or control animations before capture. A page that has merely finished navigating may still be changing visually.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions repeatedly capture until consecutive screenshots match, illustrating why stability matters; this is not Selenium behavior. For dynamic content that is irrelevant to the assertion, filter only the known volatile elements. A broad mask can conceal a real defect.
A practical Selenium screenshot comparison workflow
- Choose a checkpoint. Decide whether the test covers the current page context or a specific element, and keep that scope consistent.
- Capture an approved baseline. Save the expected image from a known-good run. Include useful context such as test name, browser, platform, and viewport in its filename or test metadata; the same UI can render differently across environments.
- Prepare the page. Wait for the application state your test needs, stabilize data and animations, and filter only known dynamic regions.
- Capture the current image. Use the same browser configuration and capture scope as the baseline.
- Check image dimensions. If width or height differs, investigate viewport, page state, or capture scope. Do not resize the images just to make the comparison run; that can hide a geometry regression.
- Compare and retain evidence. Apply an explicit comparison policy and produce a diff image or equivalent report. Keep the baseline, actual capture, and diff available when a test fails.
- Review before updating. Determine whether a difference is an intended design change, an environment mismatch, unstable content, or a defect. Update the baseline only after review.
Choose a comparison rule that matches the test
| Rule | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Exact pixel match | The browser and rendering environment are tightly controlled and every pixel change matters. | Minor font-edge or platform variation can create failures. WebdriverIO documents a zero-tolerance ignoreNothing mode. |
| Tolerant pixel comparison | Small rendering differences should not fail the test. | Too much tolerance can hide real layout or color changes. WebdriverIO exposes tolerance settings; Playwright supports a maximum differing-pixel count. |
| Anti-aliasing allowance | Text and shape edges vary slightly across runs or machines. | It may excuse meaningful changes concentrated at edges. WebdriverIO says its anti-aliasing preset is enabled by default in v10. |
| Filter volatile regions | A known dynamic region is outside the visual assertion’s purpose. | Anything excluded from comparison can change without failing the test. Playwright supports a screenshot stylesheet for filtering elements. |
| Visual-testing framework | You need reusable checks, organized baselines, or comparison reports. | It adds configuration and baseline maintenance. WebdriverIO documents save/check methods and baseline updates. |
Set sensitivity deliberately; there is no universal mismatch percentage that guarantees perceptually correct results. Calibrate against representative rendering noise and intentional changes, document why the chosen settings are acceptable, and inspect the diff when a test fails. WebdriverIO’s documentation describes options including Pixelmatch’s threshold and includeAA, and cautions against mixing direct options with preset modes in one options object. Check the documentation for your installed version: WebdriverIO Visual Service v10 changed its comparison engine from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch, so mismatch percentages can differ from v9 and existing baselines may need review. See WebdriverIO visual testing and its comparison options.

Diagnose a failed comparison
- The whole image shifts or dimensions differ: check viewport, device scale, capture scope, scroll position, and page layout before changing the tolerance.
- Text edges differ but layout is stable: check browser, OS, fonts, and headless configuration. Consider an anti-aliasing allowance only if that variation is acceptable for this test.
- Only a small region changes between runs: check for timestamps, rotating content, animation, random data, or late-loading assets. Stabilize the source or narrowly filter the region if it is irrelevant.
- The diff is large after a browser or framework upgrade: compare the environment and the comparison engine with those used to create the baseline. Reassess old baselines rather than assuming the application changed.
- A baseline update makes the test pass: that only replaces the expected image; it does not establish that the change is correct. Review the actual and diff images before accepting it.

If you need clean website captures outside a Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF; for a comparison test, save the response and compare it with your own baseline using the same kind of explicit image-diff policy described above. It is not a Selenium comparison engine.
For example, this cURL request captures Stripe and saves the response as WebP:

Does Selenium compare screenshots automatically?
No. Selenium captures screenshots; your test or a visual-testing framework must compare them with a baseline.
