Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Selenium’s TakesScreenshot interface: call getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE), then copy the returned file to the path where you want to keep it. ChromeDriver supports this workflow. The example below opens a page, saves a PNG, and always closes the browser.
Capture and save a screenshot in Java
This example uses Selenium’s documented file-output workflow and Java NIO to place the image at screenshot.png in the working directory.
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import java.io.File;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
public class ScreenshotExample {
public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://www.example.com");
File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Files.copy(screenshot.toPath(), Path.of("screenshot.png"),
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The screenshot call is getScreenshotAs. The returned file is temporary output; the Files.copy line determines where your saved copy goes and replaces an existing file of the same name. The Selenium Java API documents ChromeDriver as implementing TakesScreenshot (ChromeDriver API). Selenium’s screenshot example likewise retrieves OutputType.FILE, copies it to a destination, and quits the driver (Selenium screenshot example).
Where to put the call
Call driver.get(...) first so the browser is on the page you intend to capture. If the page changes asynchronously, wait for the relevant content before taking the screenshot; capturing immediately after navigation can produce an image before that content appears. Keep screenshot capture and file copying inside the try, with driver.quit() in finally so the browser session is closed even if capture or saving throws an exception.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Capture one element instead of the browser view
For a screenshot of a specific element, find it and call the screenshot method on the WebElement rather than on the driver:
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import java.io.File;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
WebElement element = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("#receipt"));
File image = element.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Files.copy(image.toPath(), Path.of("receipt.png"),
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
Add import org.openqa.selenium.By; if it is not already present. This captures the selected element, not a full-page image. Selenium documents element screenshots separately in its browser windows documentation.

Set up ChromeDriver
With a current Selenium 4 setup, Selenium Manager can download a suitable driver automatically; Selenium documents this behavior starting with Selenium 4.6. For most projects, initialize new ChromeDriver() and let Selenium manage the driver rather than hard-coding a local executable path (Selenium driver setup).
If you need to choose the driver executable explicitly—for example, in a controlled build environment—configure the appropriate ChromeDriver Service object with its path and pass that service when constructing the driver. Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions should match under Selenium’s Chrome-specific guidance. Consult the current Chrome documentation and Selenium downloads for version-specific setup; version compatibility guidance can change.

Output handling and capture scope
- File output:
OutputType.FILEgives Java a file to copy. The copy operation is what persists the image at your chosen destination. - Capture scope: a driver screenshot captures the browser’s current screenshot context; a
WebElementscreenshot targets that element. Do not assume the basic driver call captures an entire long page beyond the browser screenshot semantics documented for your setup. - Format and filename: the example saves to a
.pngpath. If you change output handling or extension, ensure the image data and filename agree. - Repeat runs:
REPLACE_EXISTINGintentionally overwrites the previous image. Remove that option or create unique filenames if each test run must be retained.
Troubleshooting
Chrome fails to start or reports a driver mismatch
Check the installed Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions first; Selenium’s Chrome guidance says they should match. Update the browser or driver as appropriate, and consult the current Selenium driver documentation if Selenium Manager cannot resolve the installation. Avoid disabling driver build checks as a routine workaround: Selenium describes that as unsupported.
Driver executable cannot be found
For Selenium 4.6 and later, try the standard Selenium Manager-managed setup before adding old tutorial instructions that hard-code a driver path. If automatic management is unsuitable, set the executable path through ChromeDriver’s Service configuration and verify that the path is valid in the environment running the test.

The saved image is missing or overwritten
The relative path screenshot.png is resolved from the Java process’s working directory, which may differ from the project folder shown in your IDE. Use an absolute path or print/check Path.of("screenshot.png").toAbsolutePath() to locate it. If the file exists but contains the latest run only, that is the expected effect of REPLACE_EXISTING.
The screenshot is blank or misses content
Confirm navigation completed and that the target content is present before capture. For pages that render asynchronously, wait for a meaningful element or condition rather than relying on an arbitrary immediate screenshot. Also verify that you are calling the driver method for a browser view or the element method for a specific element, as intended.

If you need a screenshot through an API instead of a local Selenium browser, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one request and returns an image or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result reported in response headers.
