If OBS starts dropping frames when you record and stream at the same time, first check View > Stats and identify which counter is increasing. Network dropped frames point to the connection to YouTube; frames missed due to rendering lag point to OBS struggling to render; frames skipped due to encoding lag mean an encoder cannot keep up. The fix depends on which one you see—changing bitrate will not fix a GPU rendering bottleneck, and changing encoder quality will not repair an unstable network.

Use the steps below to isolate the problem, reduce the load on the affected part of your system, and test again with recording and streaming enabled together.

Identify which OBS frames are being lost

Open View > Stats in OBS while reproducing the problem. Note which counter rises and when it starts: before recording, immediately after recording begins, or only under a particular game or scene load. Also note your stream resolution, frame rate and bitrate, plus the stream and recording encoders and their settings.

  • Dropped frames (Network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate. Investigate upload capacity and the network path.
  • Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not rendering or compositing scenes fast enough, often because the GPU is overloaded or another system bottleneck is limiting it.
  • Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder cannot finish frames on time. Reduce encoding work or use an appropriate hardware encoder if your system supports one.

These counters describe different problems, and more than one can rise at once. Without your OBS log, Stats counters, settings, hardware and network measurements, it is not possible to identify a particular computer’s bottleneck with certainty. OBS separates network troubleshooting from performance troubleshooting in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guides.

Fix rendering lag by freeing resources for OBS

If the rendering-lag counter rises, reduce the work OBS and other programs are asking the GPU to do. Make one change at a time, then repeat the same stream-and-recording test so you can see which change helps.

Reduce competing GPU load

  • If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync. A game rendering more frames than needed can leave less GPU capacity for OBS.
  • Lower demanding game graphics settings and close other GPU-heavy programs you recognize.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick option for GPU overload; it is Windows-specific, not a general remedy for every platform.

Lower the OBS scene and output workload

  • Temporarily simplify busy scenes, disable expensive filters, and reduce or resize browser sources and high-resolution media.
  • Test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding; if 60 fps is failing, try 30 fps and compare the result.
  • Keep the base canvas unchanged unless resources are severely constrained. Changing it can require repositioning sources; reducing the output resolution is a less disruptive first test.

Lowering resolution or frame rate reduces visual detail or motion smoothness. Choose the highest setting that remains stable under the workload you actually stream and record.

Fix encoding lag without guessing at the encoder

If skipped frames due to encoding lag rise, inspect both the stream encoder and the recording encoder. Running two outputs adds work, but the best adjustment depends on the available hardware and which encoder is handling each output.

Choose a supported encoder and reduce its workload

OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it shifts encoding work from the CPU to specialized GPU components. Availability depends on your operating system and hardware, and older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality. A hardware encoder is not automatically the answer: if rendering lag already shows the GPU is saturated, moving encoding work to the GPU may not help.

These are recording baselines, not a universal fix for simultaneous streaming and recording. In the cited guide, lower quality-number settings mean higher quality and larger files. If the system overloads, prioritize a stable stream and recording over preserving the current quality setting.

Fix network-dropped frames

If the network-dropped-frames counter rises, focus on the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server, not the recording encoder. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide explains that dropped frames can result when the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate.

Check capacity and bitrate

  • Check that your upload connection can sustain the stream reliably, then test a lower stream bitrate if it cannot. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee of stable capacity.
  • Choose a quality your connection can maintain and test before going live. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists requirements and bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate; consult the current table for your chosen output rather than applying one bitrate to every setup.
  • Changing stream bitrate affects the outgoing stream, not the local recording’s encoder quality settings.

Check the connection path before buying hardware

If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends using a wired connection. If you already use Ethernet, check whether the cable, router, modem or another network device may be faulty before replacing anything. A cable is relevant only to a suspected network-path issue; it cannot fix rendering or encoding lag.

OBS also lists VPNs, security software, network “optimization” utilities, outdated network drivers, and router or modem problems as possible contributors. Check these factors if the counter still rises after confirming upload capacity. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce video quality to cope with changing conditions, but it does not resolve the underlying network problem.

Validate both outputs under the load that caused the issue

After changing settings, test with both streaming and local recording enabled. Use the game or other workload, scene collection, stream bitrate and recording mode that usually trigger the problem; a quiet desktop test may not reproduce it.

  1. Start the stream and recording, then open View > Stats.
  2. Include audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before streaming.
  3. Watch which counter rises and whether the change you made affects it. If another counter begins rising, diagnose that path separately.
  4. Check YouTube’s stream health during the test and again during the live event.

For YouTube output, its current encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Requirements and bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so check the current YouTube encoder settings page for your chosen format. The page does not show a publication date, so these are current page specifications rather than a dated statistic.

Troubleshoot common outcomes

  • Only network-dropped frames rise: test upload capacity, lower the stream bitrate if needed, and investigate Wi-Fi, routing, VPN or network equipment. Do not start by changing the recording encoder.
  • Rendering lag rises when the game starts: cap the game frame rate, lower demanding graphics settings and reduce OBS scene complexity. On Windows, try OBS as administrator.
  • Encoding lag starts when recording begins: check both output encoders and reduce recording or stream workload. Consider a supported hardware encoder, but first check whether GPU rendering is already overloaded.
  • The issue appears only at 60 fps: test 30 fps and compare rendering and encoding counters under the same load.
  • Lowering bitrate does not help: confirm whether the rising counter is rendering or encoding lag rather than network drops; bitrate is not a universal fix.
  • Several counters rise: more than one bottleneck may be present. Address the counter-specific causes separately and retest after each change.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running rather than broadcast live camera or gameplay, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
