To take a Puppeteer screenshot with CSS animations disabled, navigate to the page, inject CSS that turns off animations and transitions, then call page.screenshot(). Puppeteer’s current screenshot options do not document an animations flag. The CSS override is broader than emulating reduced motion, but neither method stops every JavaScript-driven or otherwise changing visual element.
Disable CSS animations before taking the screenshot
Here is a complete example using Puppeteer’s documented page APIs. Install Puppeteer in your project if needed, save this as an ES module such as screenshot.mjs, then run it with Node.js.

The universal selector covers elements and pseudo-elements; !important helps override ordinary site styles. scroll-behavior: auto avoids smooth scrolling if the page or your capture workflow scrolls. The final call saves a full-page PNG to screenshot.png.

Choose a readiness condition that fits the page
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is an example, not proof that an application has finished rendering. A page may continue loading data, updating components, or changing state after network activity quiets down. When the screenshot depends on particular content, wait for the selector or application state that signals it is ready before injecting the override and capturing.
If a page replaces its document or relevant styles after you inject the CSS, inject the override again after that navigation or state change. Otherwise, the new document may no longer contain the injected style.

Alternative: emulate reduced motion
If the site already adapts its styles to the accessibility preference, emulate prefers-reduced-motion: reduce instead of injecting a broad override:

Capture a full page, viewport, or element
Use { fullPage: true } when you need the entire page, as in the first example. Omit it for the normal viewport capture, or use the documented clip option when you need a defined region. For a single element, obtain its handle and use ElementHandle.screenshot(); Puppeteer scrolls that element into view if needed before capturing it. See the screenshot options and screenshots guide.
What this does not freeze
The injected CSS targets CSS animation and transition properties. It does not establish that JavaScript animation loops, canvas drawing, video, animated images, or asynchronous page updates have stopped. If those affect the image, stabilize them separately—for example, wait for the application’s ready state or control the relevant media or script behavior in your test setup. A screenshot captures what is rendered at capture time; it is not a general page-freezing mechanism.

Common problems and fixes
- The screenshot still includes motion or changing content. Check whether the visual is controlled by JavaScript, canvas, video, an animated image, or a later application update rather than CSS animation or transitions. Wait for or control that specific source.
- The override appears to have no effect. Confirm
addStyleTag()runs after navigation and before the screenshot. If the page navigates or replaces its document afterward, reapply the style. - Content is missing despite
networkidle2. That wait condition does not guarantee application readiness. Wait for a meaningful selector or state associated with the content you need. - The screenshot is only the visible viewport. Set
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture, or use a clip for a specific region. - You tried
page.screenshot({ animations: 'disabled' }). The current Puppeteer 25.12.0 ScreenshotOptions reference does not list that option. Inject CSS or emulate reduced motion instead; check the API reference for the version you use if it changes.
