Set the page viewport with page.setViewport() before navigating, then call page.screenshot(). For example, this captures the visible 1280 × 800 page area as a PNG:

Set a fixed viewport and capture the page

With Puppeteer 25.12.0, set the dimensions explicitly before page.goto(). The viewport controls the page’s content area for layout and rendering; it is not the same as configuring the headless browser’s screen. See the official Page.setViewport() reference.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({
    width: 1280,
    height: 800,
    deviceScaleFactor: 1,
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

This example assumes puppeteer is installed and imported in the surrounding Node.js program. Replace the URL and dimensions with the page and layout you need. The networkidle0 option waits for network activity to settle; sites with persistent network connections may not reach that condition, so use a different navigation wait condition when appropriate.

Choose viewport dimensions and pixel density

Set width and height to the CSS-pixel dimensions of the layout you want to render. There is no universally correct viewport: use the dimensions that match your responsive-layout test or target display. Set deviceScaleFactor when the output’s device-pixel density matters; 1 is a straightforward baseline.

Puppeteer’s connection default viewport is 800 × 600, but explicit dimensions make the requested capture unambiguous. The configured value returned by page.viewport() reflects Puppeteer’s settings; it does not verify the browser’s actual page viewport. See the Page.viewport() reference and ConnectOptions reference.

Capture the viewport, full page, or a region

By default, page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport, not the entire document. The fullPage option defaults to false; turn it on when you need content below the fold:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });

Use clip to capture a specific rectangular region instead. The screenshot options reference documents its coordinates and dimensions:

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'region.png',
  clip: { x: 100, y: 120, width: 600, height: 400 },
});

With a clip specified, captureBeyondViewport defaults to true; without a clip, it defaults to false. Consult the Puppeteer 25.12.0 ScreenshotOptions reference for the full set of capture options.

Set the output format and background

  • path sets the output file. Puppeteer infers the image type from the file extension.
  • PNG is the default image format. Supported lossy formats can use the quality option; it does not apply to PNG.
  • omitBackground defaults to false. Set it to true when you want to omit the default white background and allow transparency.

For example, to save a JPEG with a specified quality:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.jpg', type: 'jpeg', quality: 80 });

Capture one element

When you need a component rather than a viewport or document region, use ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer tries to scroll the element into view if it is hidden:

Troubleshoot unexpected dimensions or content

  • The image shows only the top or visible portion. This is the default viewport capture. Set fullPage: true for the entire page, or use clip for a selected region.
  • The layout does not match the intended responsive breakpoint. Check that width and height are the values you intended, and set the viewport before navigation. Some sites react to viewport changes; changing mobile or touch settings can reload the page.
  • The configured viewport looks right, but the rendered result does not. page.viewport() reports Puppeteer’s configured settings and does not inspect the actual page viewport. Review the target page’s rendering and ensure the viewport was applied before navigation.
  • The screenshot file is missing or has an unexpected format. Check the output path and extension. Puppeteer infers the image format from the path unless a supported type is specified.
  • A transparent background is still white. Set omitBackground: true; the option is false by default.
  • The capture waits indefinitely at navigation. A page with ongoing network activity may not satisfy networkidle0. Choose a navigation wait condition that fits the page, then explicitly wait for any content your screenshot depends on.
