For a spare Intel PC running OBS, start with Quick Sync H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the actual scene and connection before relying on the stream. Quick Sync availability and stream stability depend on the PC, drivers, OBS build, and upload connection.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for Quick Sync
For an ordinary SDR broadcast, H.264 is a practical starting codec. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but the values below are specifically YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular PC or internet connection will deliver a stable stream.

Choose the output your PC and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is available in its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Encoder and rate control
- Encoder: Intel Quick Sync H.264, if OBS detects it.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies a maximum interval of four seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended encrypted transport. YouTube also supports RTMP.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported. YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify stereo AAC at 128 Kbps.
Depending on the QSV encoder and OBS build, available controls and labels may differ. YouTube’s advanced recommendations for H.264 also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. Use those where the encoder exposes them; do not assume every OBS version presents every option.

Check whether the spare PC can use Quick Sync
OBS documents Intel Quick Sync Video support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on a Core i processor from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer. OBS recommends generation 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because earlier QSV generations had lower encoding quality. This is a documented compatibility baseline, not a promise of satisfactory quality from every older PC. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.
If Quick Sync is missing in OBS
- Check that the processor’s integrated graphics are enabled in the system firmware. Intel says Quick Sync is available only when processor graphics are enabled.
- Install or update the appropriate Intel graphics driver.
- Reopen OBS and check whether an Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoder is available in the encoder choices. Exact menu labels can vary by OBS build.
- If the PC has a separate graphics card, check whether the integrated graphics were disabled in firmware. A discrete GPU does not guarantee that processor graphics—and therefore Quick Sync—remain enabled.
Intel explains the processor-graphics requirement in its Quick Sync troubleshooting guidance. OBS notes that hardware encoding moves work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, which can reduce CPU impact; actual quality and performance depend on the encoder generation and machine.

Configure OBS and validate the stream
- Confirm the prerequisites: enable Intel processor graphics, install the graphics driver, and verify that OBS offers a QSV H.264 encoder.
- Select the encoder: in OBS’s output or streaming encoder settings, choose Intel Quick Sync H.264 if available. OBS’s QSV support is documented for Windows and Linux on supported Intel graphics generations.
- Set the stream parameters: use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the H.264 bitrate matching the selected resolution and frame rate in the table above. Choose RTMPS in the streaming service settings when available.
- Check upload capacity: measure the connection you will actually use and confirm it can sustain the selected video bitrate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of uninterrupted throughput, so leave headroom rather than targeting the connection’s maximum.
- Run a private or unlisted test: include movement and audio similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance specifically recommends representative audio and movement and checking stream health.
An encoder can be used for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio and video hardware, or a more complex production; those are possible uses, not extra equipment requirements for a basic spare-PC stream. See YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
OBS does not show a Quick Sync encoder
- Likely cause: integrated graphics are disabled, the graphics driver is missing or outdated, or the hardware does not meet the documented QSV baseline.
- What to do: enable processor graphics in firmware, install the Intel driver, restart OBS, and check encoder availability again. If the CPU is older than the generation OBS documents, compatibility may be limited.
YouTube reports unstable stream health
- Likely cause: upload throughput is insufficient or inconsistent for the chosen bitrate, or the test did not reflect the real scene.
- What to do: test the intended resolution and frame rate with representative motion and audio; check YouTube’s stream-health warnings; reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate reliably.
The stream looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate
- Likely cause: the recommendation is not a quality guarantee. Older QSV generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding, and scene complexity also affects the result.
- What to do: compare a realistic test at a lower resolution or frame rate, verify the output settings, and use a newer supported QSV generation where available. Do not assume a bitrate increase will solve a connection or encoder limitation.
The picture or audio does not match YouTube’s suggested format
- What to do: where exposed by OBS, check progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR for an SDR stream, plus stereo AAC at 128 Kbps. Encoder options vary, so confirm results in a test rather than relying only on a setting label.
Copyright and YouTube Live rules still apply
Quick Sync changes how the PC encodes video; it does not grant rights to broadcast the content. Use footage, music, and other material you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A private or unlisted test is useful for validating the encoder and connection, but it does not establish that content is cleared for a public broadcast or monetization.
