For a 480p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube also recommends keeping about 20% upload headroom, so plan for roughly 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity for a 4 Mbps H.264 stream, before accounting for other network traffic. For a passive video loop, use normal latency and test the complete setup before going live.

Recommended bitrate for 480p at 30 fps

YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies these rates for 480p at 30 fps. They are the bitrate sent from your encoder to YouTube, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 480p rendition at that exact rate; YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats.

Codec YouTube-listed minimum Recommended bitrate
H.264 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations. The published minimums are far below the recommendations, but YouTube does not say that using a minimum will produce acceptable-looking video. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended rate, test a lower setting and inspect the actual stream rather than assuming the minimum will look good. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

How much upload speed to reserve

Measure outbound upload, not download speed. YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload headroom. For a 4 Mbps H.264 stream, that means aiming for roughly 5 Mbps of available upload capacity for the stream, with extra room if other devices or applications use the same connection. The 5 Mbps figure is the 4 Mbps encoder rate plus the recommended headroom; it is not a guarantee against fluctuations or competing traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the headroom recommendation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Upload capacity that varies can still cause dropped frames or interruptions even when a speed test sometimes reaches the target. Test at the time and on the connection you intend to use, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.

Encoder settings for a stable loop

  • Resolution and frame rate: Set the encoder to 480p at 30 fps; YouTube’s 480p bitrate row applies to 30 fps.
  • Codec and bitrate: Choose the recommended rate for the codec actually selected: 4 Mbps for H.264 or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Connection: Use RTMPS for YouTube Live.
  • Latency: Start with normal latency for a non-interactive loop. Lower latency matters less when there is little audience interaction and can result in more playback buffering.

These encoder and latency recommendations are documented in YouTube’s live encoder settings and latency guidance.

Loop a video in OBS

Loop one video file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file.
  2. Enable the source’s Loop option so playback restarts after the file ends.
  3. Configure the stream output using the codec-specific bitrate and other settings above, then connect OBS to your YouTube Live stream.

Loop a playlist

For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that this source requires VLC. Its Media Sources documentation describes the available source behavior.

Test before going live

  1. Run a test stream using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, network and loop source planned for the live broadcast.
  2. Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will actually hear and see; a static test can miss problems that appear during real playback.
  3. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while the test runs. YouTube Help advises creators to test before starting a live stream.
  4. If the stream is unstable, check upload capacity and competing traffic first. If necessary, try a lower bitrate, then review the resulting video quality in the actual stream.

What to know about a long-running loop

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a stream running longer than 12 hours will be archived, so do not rely on an automatic archive for a longer loop. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
