To have CloudConvert use a page’s screen stylesheet for HTML-to-PDF conversion, use the capture-website operation and set css_media_type to screen. That is CloudConvert’s documented example—not a guarantee that CSS background colors or images will appear. Check the options available for your selected operation and engine, then test both kinds of background in a sample PDF.
Configure the CloudConvert HTML-to-PDF job
- Choose the input method. CloudConvert supports a webpage URL or supplied HTML. For a protected URL, its HTML-to-PDF page describes sending custom authorization headers.
- Use the
capture-websiteoperation and setoutput_formattopdf. - Set
css_media_typetoscreenif the page should use its screen stylesheet. CloudConvert uses this value in its HTML-to-PDF example. - Before relying on any background setting, inspect the current options for the operation and engine in CloudConvert’s API operation metadata or Job Builder.
- Convert a minimal test page and inspect the resulting PDF, checking a CSS background color and a CSS background image separately.
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF API page documents the screen-media example and configurable layout capabilities. Its Capture Website operation documentation shows the job and task structure.
What css_media_type: screen does—and does not—establish
The setting selects screen media rather than print media for the captured page. It is a sensible starting point when the screen stylesheet contains the desired design. The reviewed documentation does not say that this setting forces CSS backgrounds to appear, nor does it establish a dedicated background-printing option or its default. Do not assume a parameter such as print_background is accepted: confirm the current operation options first.
CloudConvert describes website-to-PDF output as Chrome-based and similar to browser Print to PDF output. Verify backgrounds with a small test
Create a test page with one plainly visible CSS background color and a separate CSS background image. Convert it using the same input method, operation, engine, and relevant options planned for production. Check the PDF itself rather than inferring success from the job completing: a color may render while an image does not, or vice versa.
This is a validation procedure, not a guarantee or a reported test result. If a background is absent, check whether the conversion process can access the image URL, whether relative asset paths resolve correctly from the captured page, and whether dynamic content or styles had loaded by capture time.

Check operation options and page layout
CloudConvert’s API reference explains how to list operations and retrieve their options and engine versions; options are associated with conversion types. Use the live operation metadata or Job Builder for the selected operation and engine rather than relying on an unverified parameter name. The reference is at CloudConvert Operations.
For layout, CloudConvert documents controls such as page size, margins, zoom, and custom headers and footers. Header and footer templates are separate from the page’s CSS backgrounds; configuring them does not establish that a background will print.

Wait for dynamic page content when needed
If the page renders its content or styles after initial navigation, configure the capture to wait for a relevant CSS selector before conversion. CloudConvert says its headless Chrome browser can wait for a custom selector. Choose a selector that appears only when the needed content is ready, then verify that the background asset itself has loaded.
Troubleshooting missing backgrounds
- The page looks right in a browser, but the PDF uses different styles: Confirm the conversion uses
css_media_type: screenif screen styling is intended. Check the operation’s available options rather than assuming media selection forces background printing. - A background color is missing: Test a simple, obvious color on a minimal page. Verify the selected media type and inspect the actual PDF.
- A background image is missing but the color appears: Check that the conversion process can reach the image URL and that any relative path resolves correctly. Test the image independently from the color.
- Only dynamically rendered content is absent: Wait for a selector that signals the required content is present, then convert again.
- An option or parameter is rejected: Check the current options for the exact operation and engine in Job Builder or the API reference. Do not rely on an undocumented background parameter.
- The PDF has the wrong page layout: Review page size, margins, and zoom. Treat header/footer configuration as a separate layout concern, not a background-rendering switch.
