First find where the mismatch starts: compare the original video with the YouTube output. If the original is already out of sync, repair or re-encode that file before uploading it again. If it is synchronized but the YouTube stream is not, check the upload and delivery path, test privately, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Restream documents an audio-offset adjustment for encoder workflows; its published guidance does not establish that the same control is available for prerecorded Upload & Stream events.

1. Locate where audio and video stop matching

Use a recognizable moment—spoken words, a clap, or an impact—and compare it at normal playback speed. Check the original file first, then the YouTube output. If available, compare the live preview with the saved replay as well. Note whether the mismatch is already present in the source, appears only after streaming, or grows over time. This comparison is a practical way to isolate the stage where the problem begins; it is not a Restream-specific guarantee about prerecorded events.

  • The original file is out of sync: Correct the source in a video editor or re-encode it, then upload the corrected file and run a new test.
  • The original is synchronized, but the YouTube output is not: Check the event workflow and file preparation, then test the destination output and inspect available stream diagnostics.
  • The live preview and replay differ: Record which one shows the problem and whether the offset changes. This can help when you escalate the issue.

Restream’s encoder troubleshooting advice also starts by comparing a local recording with the stream, but applying that diagnostic to an uploaded prerecorded file is an inference: the goal is to establish where the defect first appears.

2. Check the prerecorded file’s upload specifications

Restream’s upload requirements, dated April 22, 2026, specify these formats and encoding details. Meeting them can rule out preparation problems, but does not prove that a mismatch was caused by a format or setting.

Item Restream’s stated requirement or recommendation
Container MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV
Video codec H.264
Audio codec AAC
Keyframe value 2 (mandatory in the upload requirements)
Resolution and frame rate Full HD 1080p at 30 or 60 fps is recommended
Rate control and bitrate CBR is recommended; use a bitrate appropriate for the destination platform
Lead-in and tail Restream recommends adding 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end so the destination has room to process the incoming stream without cutting off critical material

If the file needs conversion or its own sync repair, make the change to a copy, preserve the original, and inspect the result before replacing the scheduled upload.

3. Confirm whether an encoder is involved

Restream’s documented audio-offset instructions apply to an external encoder workflow, not a confirmed control for prerecorded Upload & Stream events.

If you are using an encoder

  1. Confirm that the encoder has the intended audio and video devices selected.
  2. Make a local recording and check whether its sound matches its picture.
  3. If the local recording is out of sync, adjust the audio sync offset in the encoder’s mixer or advanced audio settings. Restream suggests trying values such as 200 and -200, then tuning from the result. These are trial values, not guaranteed settings; the correct value depends on the encoder and setup.
  4. Record and check again after each adjustment. If the local recording is synchronized but the stream is not, Restream advises investigating network or CPU issues.

Restream’s encoder article also recommends AAC at 44.1 kHz and cautions that 48 kHz may cause sound problems on some devices or services. YouTube’s encoder recommendations, by contrast, list AAC or MP3 and specify 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. These recommendations address different contexts: match the actual workflow and channel layout rather than treating either sample rate as a universal fix.

If you are using Upload & Stream

Do not assume the encoder’s offset control exists in the prerecorded-event interface. The reviewed Restream documentation does not confirm an equivalent adjustment there. If the source is synchronized and the event output is not, proceed with a private or unlisted test and gather the event and output details for Restream support.

4. Run a private test on YouTube

Restream documents testing without going live or sending an unlisted stream to YouTube. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real event and monitoring stream health. Use a short, representative segment and compare the same moment in the source and destination output.

  1. Use the Restream test workflow or schedule an unlisted YouTube test, as appropriate for your event.
  2. Include speech and visible movement so the comparison gives you clear sync points.
  3. Watch the YouTube output and, if available, inspect the saved replay.
  4. After changing the source, encoder, or delivery setup, repeat the comparison rather than assuming the adjustment worked.

5. Distinguish delivery latency from lip-sync error

Latency is the delay between capture and what a viewer sees; lip-sync error is a relative mismatch between audio and video. A latency setting alone does not diagnose a prerecorded video’s offset. YouTube estimates latency of less than 10 seconds for most viewers at low latency and less than 5 seconds at ultra-low latency. These are delivery-delay estimates, not acceptable audio/video offset targets. YouTube also notes that lower latency reduces read-ahead buffering and can increase exposure to buffering problems; network congestion can delay a stream too.

6. Read YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics

If YouTube shows stream-health warnings, use them as clues about configuration or delivery, not as proof of a particular sync cause. The Live Streaming API health documentation covers issues including audio codec or sample-rate configuration, multiple audio streams, keyframe frequency, video codec, and insufficient video ingestion. Match each warning to the actual stream path and settings before changing anything.

7. Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next
The original file already has the mismatch Repair or re-encode the source, inspect the corrected copy, and upload that version.
The original is synchronized, but the prerecorded YouTube output is not Check Restream’s upload requirements, run a private or unlisted test, compare the output again, and contact Restream support if it persists. Do not assume an encoder offset setting is available for an Upload & Stream event.
An encoder’s local recording is out of sync Verify selected devices and tune the encoder’s audio offset while checking a new local recording after each change.
An encoder’s local recording is synchronized, but its stream is not Investigate network or CPU issues and review YouTube stream-health messages.
The stream has a noticeable viewer delay, but audio and video remain aligned Treat it as a latency or buffering issue rather than a lip-sync offset. Check the latency mode and delivery conditions.
A YouTube health warning appears Check the corresponding audio, codec, keyframe, or ingestion configuration; a warning is a diagnostic clue, not confirmation of the sync defect’s cause.
