Acceptance test-driven development (ATDD) means agreeing on examples of acceptable behaviour before implementing a requirement, then using those examples to guide development and check the finished behaviour. For a front-end feature, those examples should describe outcomes people can see and interactions they can perform—not merely details of the code. ATDD does not require Gherkin, Cucumber, Cypress, or any particular test layer.

What is acceptance test-driven development?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) defines ATDD as defining acceptance tests for requirements before implementing those requirements. Its practice page says, “ATDD starts when requirements are first being developed.” PMI describes customers, developers, and testers as collaborating to specify the product or service; automation can help with regression, but it is not a prerequisite for implementing the tests. PMI’s ATDD practice page

“Test-driven” here is about timing and collaboration: the team makes expected behaviour concrete before building it, and the examples shape implementation. The important work is surfacing ambiguity and agreeing what counts as acceptable. A script written after the feature is complete may still be a useful test, but it did not drive development in the ATDD sense.

How to turn a front-end requirement into acceptance examples

Start with a conversation, not a test syntax. Cucumber’s BDD guidance names the related practices Discovery, Formulation, and Automation: explore examples together, record them in a form people and machines can understand, then automate selected examples and implement the described behaviour. Cucumber presents BDD as a collaborative approach, not simply the use of its product. Cucumber’s Behaviour-Driven Development documentation

For a practical session, Cucumber’s Example Mapping guidance suggests recording the story, the rules or constraints that apply, examples for each rule, and questions or assumptions still unresolved. Those questions are part of the work: a confident-looking test cannot settle a product decision the team has not made. Cucumber’s Example Mapping guidance

  1. State the user goal. Describe what a person is trying to accomplish, rather than naming a component or implementation task.
  2. Identify rules and constraints. Clarify what must be true, including relevant permissions, required fields, or conditions for success.
  3. Make each rule concrete. Agree on examples of normal behaviour, invalid or missing input, boundary cases, and visible recovery paths where they matter.
  4. Record open questions. Assign unresolved assumptions for clarification instead of silently treating guesses as requirements.
  5. Choose examples that prove the important behaviour. Write them in a shared language the team can maintain, then decide which merit automation.

Illustration: a sign-in form

This invented example demonstrates the process; it is not a report of testing a real application. Before implementation, a team might agree on four outcomes: valid credentials lead to the signed-in state; invalid credentials produce a clear error; empty required fields receive appropriate feedback; and a person can reach the account-recovery route. The team should settle details such as the exact error wording and recovery destination rather than leave them implicit.

Automate a high-value example so it fails before the new behaviour exists, implement the smallest change that makes it pass, and retain the example as a regression check. Use unit or component-level tests for internal details when they give faster or clearer feedback. Keep acceptance scenarios focused: Cypress advises judging test size partly by whether the test title tells a teammate what broke. Cypress guidance on writing and organizing tests

How browser acceptance tests fit with component tests

Acceptance level describes the requirement being checked, not a mandatory technical layer. A 2022 TU Wien thesis notes that acceptance tests need not target the user interface to be useful. But when the requirement concerns a rendered state, visible feedback, or a user interaction, a browser check can directly cover that acceptance condition. Thomas Spendier’s 2022 TU Wien thesis

End-to-end browser scenarios

An end-to-end (E2E) test visits the application in a browser and performs actions through the interface as a user would. It can be appropriate when acceptance depends on a complete journey across screens or on how integrated parts of the application work together. Keep each scenario valuable and understandable; a single sprawling test can make failures hard to diagnose. Cypress describes this browser-driven E2E approach in its documentation. Cypress: end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing

Real-browser component tests

A component test mounts a component directly in a real browser and checks its rendering and interaction in that narrower context. It can be useful when a component’s visible states or edge cases matter but a full application journey would add unnecessary scope. It does not, on its own, establish that an entire user journey or its integrations work.

Unit tests and exploratory testing

Unit tests can cover internal logic quickly and support implementation, but passing unit tests alone may not demonstrate that the user story’s visible outcome is right. Exploratory testing remains useful for investigating behaviours and questions that agreed automated examples do not cover. Cucumber describes executable examples as a way to reduce manual regression work and leave more time for exploration—not as a replacement for exploration. Cucumber’s Behaviour-Driven Development documentation

Automated accessibility checks can be one part of front-end testing—for example, Cypress documents checking image alternative text—but an automated check does not establish accessibility conformance by itself. Treat it as one useful check within broader accessibility work. Cypress: end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing

Choosing an approach without confusing tools with ATDD

ATDD supplies a collaboration and specification practice; tools help record or exercise the examples. Cucumber documents collaborative discovery and executable specifications, while Cypress documents browser E2E and real-browser component testing. These are related but distinct capabilities, and neither tool creates good acceptance criteria unless the team first agrees on the expected behaviour.

Decision Questions to ask
Readability Do product owners, testers, and developers need to read scenarios directly, or is code-level test syntax sufficient for this team?
Scope Does the condition concern a complete user journey, an individual UI component, or a business rule that can be checked below the browser?
Application fit Does the framework and application architecture fit the tool’s supported browser and component workflows?
Feedback and diagnosis Will a failure show which user-visible outcome broke, and can the team reproduce and debug it?
Maintenance Do scenarios express stable business behaviour, or are they tied to incidental DOM structure and implementation details?
Collaboration Does the team actually discover and formulate examples together, or is it only translating tickets into scripts?

There is no universal tool winner in the available documentation, nor an established head-to-head ranking, comparative flakiness rate, or productivity effect size. Compare tools against the team’s scope, browser needs, integration constraints, readability requirements, and maintenance cost rather than assuming a particular syntax or test layer is ATDD.

Keeping acceptance checks useful over time

  • Write scenarios around user-visible outcomes and meaningful rules, not internal selectors or implementation steps unless those are themselves part of the requirement.
  • Give each scenario a title that tells a teammate what behaviour failed; avoid both opaque end-to-end journeys and excessive fragmentation into low-level assertions.
  • Keep acceptance examples alongside lower-level tests and exploratory testing; each contributes different evidence.
  • Revisit examples when product rules change so the tests remain documentation of current expected behaviour rather than stale scripts.

PMI lists fewer defects caused by misunderstood requirements as an intended outcome of ATDD, but its practice page provides no measured effect size. Treat clearer shared expectations as the practice’s purpose, not as a guarantee of a particular defect reduction.

Or skip the browser setup

If the acceptance example calls for a captured page or PDF artifact, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can return an image or PDF; it is a capture service, not a substitute for agreeing on acceptance criteria or exercising an interactive browser journey.
