Choose by workflow, not by the word “unlimited.” A service-side time policy, a recording limit, a destination’s own rules, and the resilience of your full setup are separate questions.
How the workflows differ
Switchboard Live: encoder in, destinations out
Switchboard Live is an encoder-to-cloud relay and destination-management service. You send a feed from an external encoder into a workflow, then activate destinations. Its workflow documentation lists RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT transport options. How long can you stream—and record?
Do not treat “unlimited streaming,” a recording cap, and 24/7 availability as interchangeable.
Switchboard Live
Switchboard’s pricing page lists 24/7 Streams under Enterprise. That makes it the clearer match if a named always-on offering is the first requirement, but it does not establish that the feature is available on other plans. The same page lists up to 3 RTMP or SRT inputs for Enterprise. Confirm eligibility, contract terms, support arrangements, and how a stream is restarted or recovered before committing. StreamYard
StreamYard says paid plans have no streaming-time cap imposed by StreamYard itself. That policy does not override a destination platform’s duration rules, promise a particular 24/7 product, or establish that a broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
StreamYard’s help documentation lists recording storage limits of 10 hours per stream for Core, Advanced, and Teams, and 24 hours per stream for Business. Switchboard’s pricing page advertises unlimited destinations, with input and archive details depending on plan. StreamYard’s Help Center lists these concurrent destination counts for the named plans:

YouTube eligibility and authorization
YouTube live streaming requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. You also need the correct channel permissions to connect an account. YouTube says enabling live streaming for a channel can require lead time; Switchboard’s help says initial activation may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave channel enablement until launch day. - Verify that live streaming is enabled on the intended YouTube channel.
- Confirm that the person configuring the service has the required account access.
- Allow time for channel activation and test the complete destination workflow before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
What a continuous channel still needs
A plan label alone cannot keep a channel live. The published vendor information cited here does not prove uptime or recovery behavior for your specific encoder, network, content, or destination account. Treat a continuous stream as an operational setup that needs monitoring and a recovery plan.
- Feed and connectivity: For an encoder-led Switchboard workflow, identify who maintains the encoder and its internet connection, and what happens if either stops sending.
- Destination readiness: Check the YouTube channel’s eligibility, permissions, and live-stream configuration before going live.
- Recording and archive: Decide whether you need a separate recording or archive destination; a recording cap is not a broadcast cap.
- Recovery ownership: Ask each vendor what restart and alerting mechanisms apply to your chosen plan and integration. Do not assume “24/7” or “unlimited” means automatic recovery.
- Content rights: Make sure you have rights to all music, video, and other material in the stream. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and copyright enforcement apply regardless of which production or relay service you use. See the copyright safety checklist for a preflight review.
