Check the response body and headers to identify which one, then pause or pace requests according to that provider’s reset instructions. Don’t assume every 429 has the same cause, header, or retry interval.
First identify who returned the 429
A screenshot request passes through at least two relevant systems: your client calls the screenshot service, and that service loads the destination website. Either side can be responsible for a 429. The remedy differs, so inspect the complete response rather than treating the status alone as a diagnosis.
- Record the HTTP status, response body, headers, timestamp, and any request ID the provider returns. Redact API keys and sensitive URL parameters before sharing logs.
- Look for a provider-specific error code or message. Determine whether it describes your account’s request/concurrency limit, a monthly quota, or an error returned by the target host.
- Check the provider’s usage dashboard or documented usage endpoint, and compare the response with the current limits for your account and plan.
Field names and status codes are not standardized across screenshot APIs. For example, ScreenshotOne distinguishes its own concurrency_limit_reached error from host_returned_error with a target status such as 429; its error reference also lists screenshots_limit_reached for quota exhaustion (ScreenshotOne error reference; concurrency-limit guidance). Treat these as that provider’s identifiers, not universal terms.
If your screenshot provider rate-limited your account
A provider-side 429 can mean you sent requests too quickly, exceeded a parallel-render or concurrency cap, or exhausted another short-window allowance. Stop adding parallel work while you diagnose it. Put pending captures in a queue and resume at the reset time or rate the provider documents.

Retry-After, follow its specified delay. If the provider gives a different reset value, use the provider’s documented interpretation and units. - For asynchronous or usage APIs, check the provider’s current usage data rather than guessing how much capacity remains.
- Do not assume a proxy will increase your account allowance. ScreenshotOne explicitly says a proxy does not change its own concurrency request limit.
There is no universal reset interval or header name for screenshot APIs. If the response does not explain the limit, consult the provider’s current rate-limit documentation or support channel before resuming high-volume traffic.
If the destination website returned 429
Here the screenshot provider may have accepted your request, but the destination site refused the provider’s page load. Wait before retrying and honor any applicable retry signal. Repeated immediate captures can create another burst without addressing the site’s limit.
Use an alternate route only when you are authorized to access the page and automate requests to it. A proxy is not a general fix for provider-side throttling, and a target’s access controls should not be bypassed.

Check whether the issue is a monthly quota
A request-rate cap and a monthly render allowance are separate limits on some services. A 429 alone does not establish that your monthly quota is exhausted; read the provider’s error details and account usage. Remedies may differ: a short-window limit may clear after a reset, while a quota issue may require waiting for the account’s billing-period reset or changing plans.
Provider semantics vary. Screenshot API, for example, documents rate_limited as a 429 and says to honor Retry-After; it separately documents quota_reached as a 402. Its documentation says its monthly quota resets at the start of each UTC calendar month. Those codes and reset rules apply to Screenshot API, not to every provider (Screenshot API documentation).
Prevent another burst of 429s
Queue work and cap concurrency
Instead of launching an unbounded batch, feed jobs through a queue with a worker limit set below the provider’s documented concurrency allowance. If multiple services or workers use the same account, coordinate their limit state; independent workers can collectively exceed a cap even when each looks reasonable in isolation.

Back off instead of retrying immediately
When a request is rejected, pause new attempts and schedule the retry after the provider’s stated delay or reset. If no reset is supplied, use the provider’s documented guidance or contact support. Avoid tight retry loops, which can prolong throttling and make a burst worse.
Cache captures when the page has not changed
If the requested output is still valid, reuse a cached screenshot rather than rendering the same URL repeatedly. Choose cache duration based on how often the page needs to be current; a long TTL saves requests but can return stale content. Historical API guidance from CCB illustrates headers such as Retry-After, remaining capacity, and reset time, and recommends caching and pacing; its 2018 numeric examples are specific to CCB and should not be applied as screenshot-provider limits (CCB API rate-limiting guide, updated July 12, 2018).
How provider behavior differs
Use each service’s current documentation and account data; thresholds and error behavior can change. The documented examples below illustrate why a 429 should not be diagnosed from status alone.

- Confirm you are using the intended API key and account, especially if several environments or workers are involved.
- Check whether a queued batch is still dispatching requests while you are waiting.
- Compare the response timestamp and reset value with the provider’s documented time zone and units.
- If the error appears to be from the target host, test whether the site is reachable normally and whether its automated-access rules permit the capture.
- Send the provider a redacted response body and headers, timestamp, and request ID if available; do not send secrets.

Does HTTP 429 always mean I exceeded my screenshot API plan?

Should I retry a screenshot request immediately after a 429?
No. Follow the provider’s Retry-After or reset instruction when available, and avoid tight retry loops.
Can a proxy fix a screenshot API concurrency limit?
