Visual AI improves functional test automation by adding checks of what a browser or app actually renders to the actions and assertions a test already performs. It can help expose visible defects that a test focused on locators, state, or responses may not target—but it does not prove that an action worked, data was saved, or accessibility semantics are correct. Use visual checks as an additional validation layer, not a replacement for functional assertions.
What visual AI adds to a functional test
A conventional functional test drives a flow: it opens a page, enters data, clicks a control, and checks specified outcomes such as a success message, URL, API response, or updated record. Those checks are valuable, but their coverage is limited to the conditions the test author chose to assert.
A visual check captures a page or component at a meaningful point in that flow and compares the rendered result with an approved baseline. Applitools describes this approach as working alongside an existing test framework, which continues to handle navigation and functional flows. Its materials say visual checks can surface layout shifts, broken components, and content errors that locator-based assertions may miss (Applitools functional testing; functional testing details).
The distinction is scope: a screenshot can reveal that a button is missing or a layout has shifted, but it cannot by itself establish that a payment completed, that the server persisted a record, or that keyboard focus and accessible names are correct. Keep explicit behavioral, data, accessibility, and business-rule checks for those properties.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Defects visual checks may reveal
Applitools lists examples such as layout shifts, broken components, content errors, missing buttons, and font or rendering problems. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every defect will be detected in every application. Validate them against your own pages and expected changes.
- Composition and layout: unintended shifts, overlapping elements, clipping, or responsive breakage.
- Component presence and appearance: a missing button or a visibly broken component that a test does not explicitly assert.
- Rendered content: incorrect, missing, or unexpectedly changed text and other page content.
- Typography and rendering: font or browser-rendering differences that affect what the user sees.
These checks complement, rather than replace, DOM assertions. A screenshot comparison reports a difference in rendered output; your test still needs to verify the underlying user outcome.

Where visual checks belong in the test flow
- Keep the existing runner in charge. Use your browser or mobile framework for setup, navigation, user actions, and behavioral assertions.
- Choose meaningful checkpoints. Capture stable states after the relevant action has completed—for example, the page after a form submission or a component after it has loaded.
- Control the comparison conditions. Make test data, timing, animations, localization, and responsive breakpoints as predictable as your application permits.
- Review the result. Decide whether a difference is an intentional product change, a defect, or noise, then approve or correct the baseline accordingly.
Applitools says its SDKs integrate with Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium, and that checks can run in existing CI jobs. Confirm the current integration and supported configurations for your chosen framework in the vendor’s documentation before adopting it (Applitools Visual AI solutions).
How to evaluate a visual-testing approach
Run a proof of concept on important end-user journeys rather than judging a tool from a feature list alone. Include both known intentional changes and known defects where possible, and record whether failures are actionable and how much review they require.

| Evaluation area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Validation scope | Which properties are checked visually, and which still require DOM, accessibility, or business-outcome assertions? |
| Noise management | How are dynamic data, animations, fonts, antialiasing, localization, and responsive layout handled? Can volatile regions be ignored without hiding defects? |
| Environment coverage | Are the browser and device combinations you need supported? Can parallel runs remain reproducible? |
| Workflow fit | Does the SDK fit your runner and CI/CD workflow? How do baseline approval, review permissions, and failure triage work? |
| Maintenance and cost | How much baseline churn, false-alarm review, and debugging time does the approach add? What are the execution limits, data-handling terms, and total price for your use? |
Applitools describes controls for ignoring dynamic regions such as timestamps, session IDs, or A/B content, as well as grouping similar differences across browsers and resolutions. Treat these as items to exercise in your proof of concept: aggressive masking can suppress useful signals, while unhandled variability can create noisy results (Applitools functional testing details).
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Applitools’ report landing page says it covers almost 3,000 automated tests and a combined 1.5 years of quality-engineering time spent authoring them; the page excerpt does not state a year for those figures. That scope description does not establish that Visual AI saved 1.5 years or improved a particular metric by a specific percentage. The page lists test-authoring time, code efficiency, stability, and coverage as report subjects (Applitools report page).

Applitools also publishes a customer testimonial from Joe Emison, identified as Co-founder & CTO: “Thanks to Applitools Visual AI & Ultrafast Grid, we’re able to quickly catch specific defects that our functional tests cannot.” This is a promotional-context customer statement, not an independent benchmark (Applitools solutions page). The cited materials do not establish universal accuracy or an independent comparative performance result. Current product pricing is not established here; check the provider for current terms.
