To capture one HTML element, pass a CSS selector to a screenshot API that supports element targeting. The service waits for the matching element and captures its rendered bounds; use a fixed clip rectangle instead when you need a precise coordinate region rather than an element. Before relying on either method, check how the API handles waiting, hidden elements, multiple matches, and content outside the viewport.
Capture an element by CSS selector
- Choose a selector that identifies the intended element reliably. A stable ID or purpose-built attribute is generally easier to maintain than a selector tied to page layout.
- Check that the selector matches the intended element on the page. If it can match several elements, make the target more specific or use the provider’s documented multiple-match behavior deliberately.
- Send the page URL and selector using the screenshot API’s documented request format. Some APIs place the selector at the top level of the request; others expose it as an option.
- Set or confirm the service’s wait and visibility behavior. A delayed, hidden, or lazily rendered element may not be ready when capture begins.
- Inspect the returned image to verify the crop, content, and output dimensions. If the element is clipped or missing, check scrolling and beyond-viewport handling.
Browserless REST API
Browserless documents a top-level selector field alongside url in its REST screenshot request, not inside the options object. Its documentation says the API waits for the element and crops the capture to its bounding box. See the Browserless Screenshot API documentation for the current request details.
ScreenshotOne
ScreenshotOne documents a selector request option, plus controls for scrolling the element into view, waiting for a selector, and returning an error when a selector is not found. Its documentation says that if multiple elements match, it selects the first visible element in the DOM. Review the ScreenshotOne Screenshot Options for exact option names and behavior.
Choose between a selector and clip coordinates
A selector targets an element’s rendered bounds, so it is usually the better choice when the desired region corresponds to a stable DOM element. A clip rectangle targets fixed coordinates, which is useful when the region is defined by position and dimensions rather than a reliably selectable element.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use a selector when the element can be identified consistently and you want its bounds to determine the crop.
- Use a clip rectangle when you need a fixed viewport region or the page has no stable element that identifies the area.
Browserless exposes clipping through options.clip. ScreenshotOne documents clip coordinates and recommends a selector over precise coordinates when a selector is reliable. Coordinate clips can be sensitive to viewport size and layout changes. See ScreenshotOne’s guide to screenshotting an area of a site.
Handle visibility, delayed content, and multiple matches
Wait for the element to exist
Waiting for the page to load does not necessarily mean that a particular element has appeared. Use the API’s selector-wait control when available, or ensure that capture is delayed until the relevant content is rendered. ScreenshotOne documents both wait_for_selector and selector-missing handling; Browserless says its REST selector capture waits for the element.

Bring hidden or off-screen elements into view
Some tools scroll a target into view before capture, while others expose separate controls or use different capture algorithms. Confirm the API’s behavior, especially when the element is below the fold, hidden, or larger than the viewport. ScreenshotOne documents scroll_into_view, capture_beyond_viewport, and selector algorithm choices.
Make multiple matches explicit
Do not assume every provider chooses the same match. ScreenshotOne documents that it uses the first visible matching element in DOM order. For other services, verify the documented rule; when the wrong match would matter, narrow the selector so it identifies one intended element.

Puppeteer
Puppeteer lets you wait for a selector, get the corresponding element handle, then call screenshot() on that handle. Its documentation says the method tries to scroll the element into view if it is hidden. Consult the Puppeteer Screenshots guide for the current API and setup requirements.
Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot tool accepts a selector or element reference as its target. Its documentation states that fullPage cannot be combined with target in that tool. Check the Playwright Screenshots documentation for the relevant API details.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. To capture one element, pass its selector as the selector parameter:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com --data-urlencode selector='#pricing' -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

- No element or selector error: Check that the selector is valid for the rendered page and that the element exists before capture. Add the provider’s selector wait or configure its missing-selector behavior.
- The wrong matching element appears: Narrow the selector. Do not rely on an assumed first-match rule; ScreenshotOne documents first visible match in DOM order, but provider behavior varies.
- The element is off-screen or hidden: Check whether the API scrolls it into view, and whether the element is actually visible and rendered. Try the provider’s scroll option if available.
- The image cuts off part of the element: Review the selector capture algorithm and beyond-viewport behavior. If the desired result is a fixed viewport area rather than the element’s full rendered bounds, use a clip rectangle instead.
- The result reflects an old or incomplete page state: Confirm that the capture waits for the target content, not just initial page loading. Use a selector wait or the service’s documented delay or rendering controls.
Compare services against your workload
Documentation can establish which controls a service offers, but it does not establish which provider will be fastest, most reliable, or cheapest for your workload. Compare setup and deployment effort, selector and wait controls, missing and multiple-match handling, output and viewport options, and the operational requirements of the pages you capture. Test representative pages before committing a production workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture an element by CSS selector?
Yes, if the API documents element targeting. Pass the selector in the request field or option specified by that provider.
Should I use a selector or a clip rectangle?
Use a selector when a stable DOM element defines the region; use clipping when you need a fixed coordinate area.
