To run recorded physics lectures as a continuous YouTube Live stream, send a playlist through an encoder: use software such as OBS on a computer that stays on, a hosted cloud playout service, or standalone encoder hardware. YouTube Studio provides the stream URL and key. Before going live, confirm the channel can livestream, test the video and audio at a suitable bitrate, and check rights for every element in the recordings. A stream that transmits continuously is not automatically archived in full or eligible for monetization.

Choose how to play the lectures continuously

YouTube describes an encoder as a tool that converts video into a digital format for streaming. For recorded lectures, the encoder or playout system feeds prerecorded material into a YouTube Live broadcast; it is not a camera livestream.

Approach What it involves Trade-offs to consider
Local software encoder Run software such as OBS on a computer and send the lecture feed to YouTube. The computer and network connection need to remain available. You control the playlist and graphics locally; YouTube lists OBS among encoder options. A computer purchase is not implied by using the free software.
Cloud playout A hosted service sends prerecorded video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. It reduces dependence on a local computer. Compare each provider’s current playlist controls, recovery behavior, features, and pricing; the cited YouTube material does not establish a like-for-like price or reliability comparison.
Standalone encoder hardware Dedicated equipment sends or schedules prerecorded media. YouTube describes the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream feature for scheduled media playback. It can operate without a general-purpose computer, but requires specialist equipment and monitoring. YouTube’s guide does not establish its suitability or value for every creator.

For a DIY setup, the steps below use OBS on a computer. The same YouTube Studio setup applies if you choose another encoder: use its controls to provide the stream URL and key, then start the feed.

Prepare the channel and lecture playlist

Check livestream access

The channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch rather than at the last minute. YouTube can restrict live access for policy violations.

Prepare a rights-cleared, varied playlist

Gather the lecture recordings and check permission for the video, slides, music, excerpts, diagrams, and any other third-party material. Being educational does not itself clear copyrighted material. If a rights holder licensed third-party content for livestream use, ask whether the channel also needs to be added to that owner’s Content ID allowlist.

For a series, organize recordings in a deliberate order and check that each file has intelligible audio and a useful beginning and ending. A long loop should still provide real educational value: YouTube’s monetization review applies to livestreams and looks for original, authentic material rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive content. Similar-looking episodes may be monetizable when their substance meaningfully varies and offers creative or educational value; minimal variation or low educational value can make content ineligible. Having permission to use material does not by itself settle a reused-content review.

Set up the YouTube Live stream and encoder

  1. Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a stream or schedule it for later. Use the Live Control Room for its stream details.
  2. Copy the ingest details: Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the matching fields in OBS or your chosen encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to the channel.
  3. Configure the lecture feed: Select the playlist or media source in the encoder, then set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match the files and the reliable upload capacity of the sending connection. Avoid choosing settings the connection cannot sustain.
  4. Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings: For RTMP(S), YouTube supports H.264, H.265, or AV1. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds, and recommends RTMPS to encrypt video in transit to and through Google’s servers.
  5. Start with a test: Send representative lecture material, including typical motion and audio, and watch stream health in the Live Control Room. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s listed bitrate figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable; leave headroom for network variation.
  6. Go live: Start the encoder. If the broadcast is scheduled, check the preview in Studio and select Go live there when ready. Confirm that the feed, audio, and stream-health indicators remain normal after launch.

Plan for stream continuity, archives, and watch hours

A 24/7 broadcast has different practical consequences from a short lecture stream. The encoder, computer and home connection in a local setup must keep running; any interruption can break the feed. Keep an eye on stream health and have a way to restart the encoder if the machine, network, or YouTube ingest connection fails.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than that will be available as one complete archive. If the archive matters, plan around the under-12-hour guidance and check YouTube’s current archive instructions before launch.

YouTube’s August 2026 guidance says qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos or archived livestreams; unarchived livestreams do not count as qualified watch hours. This does not guarantee YPP acceptance or revenue. YouTube says YPP members can monetize livestreams, but eligibility, feature access, viewer geography, review, and policy compliance still apply.

Protect the stream from copyright and policy interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may replace the feed with a placeholder, warn the creator, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. A license may not be enough to prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Copyright claims may also be made on an archived stream after it ends.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
You cannot start a live stream. The channel is not verified, has a recent live restriction, or first-time enablement is still processing. Check livestream access and channel standing in YouTube Studio. Enable access ahead of time; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
The encoder cannot connect to YouTube. The stream URL or key is wrong, or the wrong field was used. Copy both again from the correct Live Control Room stream and enter them in the encoder’s matching fields. Keep the key private.
The feed buffers or stream health degrades. The sending connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the setup has insufficient headroom. Check the encoder and Studio stream-health indicators. Test representative content and reduce bitrate or resolution if the available upload capacity is inconsistent.
Video or audio does not look or sound right. The encoder settings or selected media source may not match the lecture files. Test the exact playlist source before launch. Check resolution, frame rate, codec, audio source, and keyframe interval; use YouTube’s two-second recommendation and do not exceed four seconds.
YouTube interrupts the stream or shows a placeholder. A Content ID match or other policy issue may have triggered enforcement. Review YouTube’s alert, verify rights for the matched material, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where licensed. Remove or replace material you cannot clear.
A complete archive is missing. The continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window. Do not rely on a single stream longer than 12 hours for a complete archive. Plan separate archive-sized sessions if preserving full recordings is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps playback running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing and plan details. To try it, start your free first day on StreamNeo.
