In a hosted screenshot API, enable its ad- or tracker-blocking controls explicitly. Avoid blocking all scripts: that can remove the code a page needs to render or work correctly.
Block selected requests with Playwright
Playwright routing lets a page or browser context inspect outgoing requests, abort selected ones, and allow the rest to continue. Install the route before navigating so it can handle requests made during the initial page load. A context-level route applies across pages in that context, including popups and opened links, subject to the service-worker exception described below.

This Node.js example uses placeholder domain patterns. Replace them with endpoints you have identified for the site you capture; the example is not a maintained or tested ad-block list.

})();Install Playwright for Node.js with npm install playwright and install its browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium if they are not already installed. The route handler checks the full request URL. You can also inspect the request resource type when your policy needs to distinguish images, scripts, or other traffic, but broad type-based blocking carries a higher risk of breaking the page.

Choose what to block narrowly
- Prefer a known ad or analytics endpoint over a blanket rule that blocks every script, XHR, or fetch request.
- Test the resulting capture for missing content, broken layout, and controls that no longer work.
- Maintain the endpoint rules as the target site changes. A domain rule suitable for one site may block useful functionality on another.
Playwright can also modify responses or fulfill requests when a workflow needs deterministic substitute data rather than simply aborting a request. See the Playwright network documentation for request routing and the BrowserContext API documentation for context routing behavior.
Account for service workers
Browser-context routing does not intercept requests handled by service workers. Playwright recommends setting the context option serviceWorkers: 'block' when interception must cover routed traffic. Blocking service workers can change how a site behaves, so use it only when that trade-off is acceptable for the pages you capture. For example, create the context as await browser.newContext({ serviceWorkers: 'block' }).

Use a hosted API’s explicit ad and tracker controls
If you do not run the browser yourself, inspect the provider’s documented request controls and enable the specific flags you need. PageBolt documents separate blockAds and blockTrackers options; both default to false, so callers must turn them on. It also documents URL substring rules and resource-type blocking. Its current parameter behavior is described in the PageBolt API documentation.
Be cautious with broad resource rules: blocking script, xhr, or fetch can suppress application code, data, or other functionality alongside advertising and analytics. ScreenshotCenter documents hide_ads=true as an ad-noise reduction option for visual regression and monitoring captures; that is a vendor-documented feature, not independent evidence that it catches every ad. Choose a blocking approach

In either setup, validate the output on the pages that matter. A successful screenshot alone does not show that every unwanted request was blocked, nor that all intended page behavior survived.
Troubleshoot missing content or ineffective blocking
- Ads or trackers still appear: Confirm the route was registered before navigation, check which request URL the page actually uses, and verify the hosted API flag is enabled rather than relying on its default.
- The page is blank or incomplete: Remove broad script, XHR, or fetch blocks and test narrower endpoint rules. Those resource types can carry essential application behavior or content.
- Some requests bypass the route: Check whether a service worker handles them. If complete interception is required, consider
serviceWorkers: 'block'and retest because it may alter site behavior. - Popups or later page activity differ: Ensure the rule is installed at the browser-context level when it must cover pages in that context, then test the specific popup or interaction that matters.
- A rule stops working over time: Recheck the target site’s actual requests and update the scoped matching rules; a hard-coded pattern is not automatically maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does blocking an ad request remove the ad from every screenshot?
Not necessarily. The result depends on which requests the page makes and whether the relevant traffic is covered by your rules or provider controls; validate the captured pages you rely on.
Should I block all JavaScript to remove tracking?
No. Scripts may also render content and provide essential page behavior. Use narrow rules for identified unwanted endpoints instead.
