Use Appium’s XCUITest driver to automate an iOS app. The standard workflow is to install Appium and the driver on a macOS host with Xcode, start an Appium server, create a session that identifies the app and Simulator or iPhone, then use an Appium client to interact with controls and assert results. Start with an iOS Simulator if you are learning; a physical device adds trust, security-setting, and WebDriverAgent signing requirements.
How Appium drives an iOS app
Appium presents a WebDriver interface to test code. For iOS, its official driver is XCUITest: the driver runs in Appium’s Node.js process and communicates through WebDriverAgent (WDA), which uses Apple’s XCTest stack on the target. That bridge lets a test use an Appium client while XCTest performs the UI automation. See Appium’s driver catalog, the driver architecture overview, and the XCUITest overview.
Prepare the host and install XCUITest
The ordinary setup uses macOS and Xcode/developer tools. Follow the driver’s setup and installation instructions for the Xcode and driver prerequisites applicable to your selected versions; the available documentation does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for Appium, XCUITest driver, Xcode, and iOS releases, so check the current requirements before pinning a toolchain.
- Install and prepare Xcode and its developer tools on the Mac that will run Appium.
- Install Appium and add the XCUITest driver with
appium driver install xcuitest. - Start the Appium server and confirm that the XCUITest driver loads. Use the current XCUITest setup guide and installation guide for the exact prerequisites and installation flow.
Windows and Linux are not drop-in substitutes for this standard Simulator workflow. The documented non-macOS route is limited to real devices, requires iOS or tvOS 18 or later, does not support automatic device selection, and does not support the default xcodebuild-based WDA startup. Use the non-macOS host guide for that RemoteXPC-specific path rather than assuming macOS feature parity.

Choose a Simulator or a physical iPhone

Neither target replaces the other for every coverage need. For Safari webview testing on a real device, the preparation guide also calls for Web Inspector and Remote Automation settings. Consult XCUITest device preparation before connecting a device.
Configure the session
Capabilities are startup parameters: Appium reads them when it creates the session, and they cannot be changed once that session has started. The required capabilities include platformName and appium:automationName. Appium-specific capabilities use the appium: prefix. XCUITest also needs a target, such as an app package, an installed app’s bundle identifier, or a browser target. The following is an illustrative Simulator configuration; replace the app path and device name with values available in your environment.

appium:udidto identify it. The XCUITest reference also advises specifying a UDID for parallel runs. - A browser target is another supported session target when the test is for browser automation rather than launching an app.
See the Appium capabilities guide and XCUITest capabilities reference for capability details. A device name or example path is not proof that the corresponding Simulator, app, or device is present; configure the values for the target you prepared.

Write the test with your Appium client
The basic test flow is the same across client languages: create a session using the capabilities above, locate an app control, interact with it, assert the resulting app state, and quit the session. Choose the Appium client and locator strategy already supported by your project. The documentation cited here does not establish one language, client, or locator strategy as best for every team, so use the current documentation for your chosen client to make the test executable.

- Have the client connect to that server and request a session with the target’s capabilities.
- Locate a control using a stable identifier or another locator your app exposes.
- Perform the action under test, then assert a visible or otherwise observable expected state.
- End the session in cleanup code, including when an assertion fails.
For example, a login test should identify the username and password fields, enter test credentials, submit the form, and verify a known post-login state. The selectors and client calls depend on the app and the client library; do not copy a made-up locator into a test and assume it matches your app.
Resolve common setup and test failures
The XCUITest driver is unavailable
Check that the driver installation command completed and that the running Appium server can load the installed driver. If Appium does not recognize it, revisit the driver installation instructions for the Appium installation in use, then restart the server and inspect its startup output.

The session cannot launch the app
Verify that the app path is correct and points to an installable package, or that the supplied bundle ID belongs to an app already installed on the selected target. Check the device name or UDID as well. Capabilities take effect only at session creation, so change them and create a new session rather than trying to alter the existing one.
WDA fails to start on a real device
Check device trust, Developer Mode on iOS/iPadOS 16 or later, UI Automation, and the WDA provisioning profile. These requirements are different from a Simulator’s setup; use the real-device preparation guide to work through signing and device preparation.

A control is missing or its coordinates behave unexpectedly
Inspect Appium’s page source and logs to see what the target exposes, and check relevant accessibility settings. The XCUITest preparation documentation notes that settings such as Zoom can affect coordinates or elements in the page source. For Safari webview tests, also verify Web Inspector and Remote Automation settings on the device.

A non-macOS setup does not behave like the standard guide
Confirm that the target is a real device running iOS or tvOS 18 or later and that the setup follows the RemoteXPC requirements. Automatic device selection and default xcodebuild-based WDA startup are not supported in that route; it is not the usual macOS/Xcode Simulator workflow.

Keep the first test narrow: a single target, a small capability set, and one observable app outcome make session and locator failures easier to separate. Use a Simulator for a simpler initial setup, then add real-device runs where physical-device coverage is required. For real devices and parallel execution, explicit UDIDs make target selection unambiguous. Test reliability also depends on stable locators and cleanup that quits sessions; the Appium/XCUITest documentation cited above does not supply a universal runtime benchmark or a quantified cost comparison, so estimate execution time and infrastructure cost from your own app, host, and test suite rather than relying on a general figure.
