There is no single best replacement for DocRaptor. Choose based on what your documents require: browser JavaScript, precise paged-media layout, a hosted API, or a renderer your team operates itself. Shortlist PDFCrowd, PDFShift, API2PDF, PDFreactor, WeasyPrint, and Headless Chromium, then render representative production documents through the candidates before switching.

How to choose a DocRaptor alternative

Start with the constraint that is driving the change—rendering behavior, cost, deployment control, or a specific PDF output requirement. “HTML to PDF” does not mean that two products produce equivalent documents: engines differ in JavaScript support, CSS behavior, pagination, and operational model.

  • Rendering: Test page breaks, running headers and footers, tables spanning pages, fonts, charts, images, and the PDF-specific CSS your templates use.
  • Dynamic content: Establish whether a document needs JavaScript, how the renderer determines that the page is ready, and which engine executes scripts.
  • Output requirements: Verify the specific need—such as PDF/A, tagged output, forms, bookmarks, or attachments—against current product documentation. Do not infer support from a general HTML-to-PDF claim.
  • Integration: Decide whether you want a managed REST API and SDK or are prepared to package, deploy, monitor, and update a library or browser renderer.
  • Cost and limits: Model real document sizes, monthly volume, retries, concurrency, and asynchronous jobs against current plans and limits.
  • Risk: For sensitive documents, obtain current retention, data-residency, security, compliance, and service-contract terms directly from each provider.

No independent head-to-head quality, throughput, failure-rate, or total-cost benchmark is established here. Vendor product descriptions explain capabilities, but they are not substitutes for testing your templates.

DocRaptor alternatives compared

Option Type What to know Check before choosing
PDFCrowd Hosted API Its documentation describes URL, raw HTML, and template inputs, SDKs in several languages, page-composition controls, JavaScript, and PDF/A or tagged PDF options. The product page says: “Convert URLs, raw HTML, and templates into production-ready PDFs from any backend.” Confirm current pricing and test the exact output features and layout your documents need.
PDFShift Hosted API Its pricing page describes plan features and accounts for generated data size when deducting credits. The page accessed in 2026 lists a free plan with up to 50 credits per month; one credit covers each 5 MB of generated data, and the vendor’s example says a 14 MB document consumes three credits. The same published free-plan details list a 15 MB maximum file size and a 30-second timeout. These plan terms can change; verify them on the current pricing page and test your workload.
API2PDF Hosted API The vendor describes HTML and URL conversion using Headless Chrome or wkhtmltopdf, alongside document-conversion and PDF utilities. Confirm which engine handles the endpoint and request you will use, and verify current support for required features.
PDFreactor Commercial conversion software/service Its REST documentation exposes a conversion service; the cited API reference identifies version 12.7.1. A DocRaptor-published comparison calls it a commercial competitor, but comparable pricing and independently benchmarked output are not established here. Ask the vendor for current terms and test your templates.
WeasyPrint Open-source library DocRaptor names it as an alternative in its own comparison. DocRaptor’s comparison says WeasyPrint lacks JavaScript support. That is a vendor-authored evaluation, not an independent test; validate the current project documentation and your own requirements.
Headless Chromium Self-managed browser renderer DocRaptor names it as a browser-rendering alternative and describes it as strong for browser behavior. DocRaptor’s comparison says it is less suited to complex PDF-specific styling. Treat that as the vendor’s view, not a neutral benchmark. Account for browser packaging, worker and resource management, and rendering changes.

What to verify about DocRaptor before replacing it

DocRaptor is a hosted API using Prince. Its API accepts HTML through document_content or a page through document_url. According to its API overview, a successful direct-generation request returns PDF bytes; hosted generation can return a URL, while asynchronous generation can return a status identifier. The API documentation describes pipeline versions and maps pipeline 10.1 to Prince 15.1 and JavaScript engine 2; it says 10.1 is the default pipeline, although an account default can be changed. Confirm the current account configuration rather than assuming it matches the documented default.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The API reference says print media is the default and identifies using screen media instead as a common source of unexpected output. It also says JavaScript engines are disabled by default and documents options to enable them. If a document differs from browser output, check the selected media type and JavaScript settings before concluding that the renderer cannot support the layout.

DocRaptor’s limits page says generation time, simultaneous requests, and documents per billing period are limited by plan. It notes that simple documents can take seconds, while documents with many resources or scripts can take several minutes. These are statements in the vendor’s documentation, not independent service-level measurements. Its product page claims a 99.99% uptime guarantee and SOC2 and HIPAA compliance; verify the applicable service agreement, scope, and reports with the provider before relying on those claims in procurement.

Run a representative conversion bake-off

Evaluate candidates using documents that expose the failure modes you care about, not a minimal sample that every engine can render. A practical test set includes:

  • A short invoice or form with the fonts and brand assets used in production.
  • A long report with tables that break across pages.
  • A document with charts or other dynamic content, if your templates depend on JavaScript.
  • Your most demanding paged layout, including headers, footers, page numbering, or PDF-specific CSS.

For each candidate, record page count, clipping, page breaks, font rendering, output structure, failure handling, and latency in your own environment. Calculate cost from your actual output sizes and monthly volume, including retries and any asynchronous workflow. This evaluation method is a recommendation, not a reported test result.

When a screenshot API is the right alternative

If the actual requirement is a visual capture of a webpage—not a document-grade PDF with controlled pagination—consider a screenshot API rather than an HTML-to-PDF converter. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for website captures: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is not a substitute for validating PDF/A, tagged output, forms, or other PDF-specific requirements.

Or skip the browser setup

For a webpage screenshot, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot API replace an HTML-to-PDF API?

Only when the need is a webpage capture rather than controlled, document-style PDF generation. ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF, but the requirements for paged layout and specialized PDF output should determine whether it fits.
