To fix repeated buffering, first determine whether the stream is failing on its way to YouTube or whether viewers are having trouble playing a healthy stream. Check OBS’s network dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports insufficient incoming video, troubleshoot the outgoing connection and encoder. If those signals are clean but only some viewers buffer, test a less demanding stream output and compare their playback conditions.

Start by locating where the buffering occurs

“Buffering” can describe two different problems: an unstable feed from your encoder to YouTube, or playback trouble on a viewer’s device or network. They need different fixes. OBS notes that viewers can report buffering even when the broadcaster has not dropped frames, while dropped frames indicate trouble sustaining the connection to the ingest server.

  1. Check OBS. Look for network dropped frames in OBS’s status information. If they are accumulating, begin with the connection between your streaming computer and YouTube.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and any specific warnings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API configuration-issues documentation describes videoIngestionStarved as a state in which YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming; viewers will experience buffering.
  3. Ask who is affected. Note whether all viewers or only some report the issue, when it starts, and whether it recurs. If OBS and YouTube show a healthy incoming stream but only some viewers buffer, investigate viewer playback conditions before changing the encoder.

Use the evidence from both ends rather than assuming that OBS, YouTube, or a viewer’s internet connection is automatically at fault.

If OBS drops frames or YouTube reports an unhealthy feed

Check bitrate against the stream format and connection

There is no universal bitrate that prevents buffering. YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 30 fps, YouTube’s current guidance lists 14 Mbps as recommended for 1080p, with a 5 Mbps minimum; for 720p, it lists 8 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain that rate. For other formats, frame rates, or codecs such as HEVC and AV1, check YouTube’s current table for the exact combination you use: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when setting video bitrate. Treat that as a heuristic, not proof of sustained capacity: other network traffic, service limits, and fluctuations matter. A single speed test cannot establish that an upload connection will remain stable during a continuous stream.

Check keyframes and YouTube’s specific warnings

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. If YouTube flags keyframe frequency or a long interval, correct the encoder setting and check the stream again. Review the actual health message: YouTube can report configuration issues involving bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, or video ingestion. A warning about insufficient incoming video points to the feed reaching YouTube, not necessarily to the viewer’s playback setup.

Test the network path before replacing equipment

  1. Try wired Ethernet. If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, test with a wired connection if one is available. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A cable is useful as a diagnostic only when you need one to make this test; it cannot fix viewer-side playback, an unsuitable encoder setting, or an upstream provider problem.
  2. Reduce OBS’s video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Make a measured adjustment that remains within YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen format, then observe dropped frames and YouTube stream health.
  3. Try another ingest server if your streaming software or service offers one. This can help test whether the selected route to the ingest server is contributing to the problem.
  4. Isolate software and network-setting interference. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, bundled network-optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers as possible factors. Test one suspected factor at a time, follow current vendor guidance, and restore security protections after a diagnostic test.
  5. Restart the modem and router. If the trouble persists, avoid replacing a modem, router, network card, switch, or extender based only on suspicion. OBS advises consulting your ISP if you are unsure whether hardware is faulty.
  6. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve persistent instability. Give them the times of the problem, symptoms, OBS logs, and YouTube health messages. Provider-side changes or route congestion may be outside your control.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation

OBS offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce dropped frames, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection issue and lowers video quality. Treat it as a way to keep a stream going during a connection problem, not as a substitute for diagnosing that problem.

If viewers buffer but the outgoing stream looks healthy

A clean OBS counter and healthy YouTube status do not prove that every viewer can play the stream smoothly. Viewers use different networks, locations, devices, and playback conditions. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not eliminate every viewer-side constraint.

  1. Confirm the scope. Ask affected viewers whether the problem occurs on another device or network, and compare their app or browser and selected playback quality. These comparisons can help distinguish a local playback issue from one affecting a wider audience.
  2. Try a less demanding output if the problem is widespread. Consider lowering bitrate, resolution, or frame rate while staying within YouTube’s recommendations. This can make playback more accessible to constrained connections and devices.
  3. Account for the global trade-off. Reducing output quality changes the stream for everyone, even if only a subset of viewers had trouble. Test the change and consider its impact on viewers who were already watching smoothly.

Do not lower bitrate or resolution automatically when only one viewer reports buffering and the outgoing stream is healthy. First compare that viewer’s playback conditions with those of unaffected viewers.

Compare fixes by the symptom they address

Option Best fit Trade-off or limit
Lower outgoing bitrate OBS shows dropped frames, or the stable upload cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Can reduce image quality; choose a rate within YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Set the recommended keyframe interval YouTube health warns about keyframe cadence or a long interval. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance; this does not resolve unrelated network or viewer-side problems.
Test wired Ethernet The broadcaster is on Wi-Fi and OBS reports dropped frames. Requires access to a wired connection; it will not fix a healthy outgoing stream that buffers only for some viewers.
Lower resolution, bitrate, or frame rate The outgoing feed is clean but playback buffering affects viewers. Reduces quality for all viewers, so assess the audience impact before keeping the change.
Escalate to the ISP Local checks fail or network instability persists. The ISP may need to investigate provider-side or routing issues; share timestamps and diagnostic evidence.

Preflight and monitor an always-on podcast stream

Before relying on a stream for continuous playback, test it with audio and movement similar to the actual podcast program. YouTube recommends testing before the live event and monitoring stream health and messages while it runs. For an always-on setup, check the health signals periodically and note when problems recur; this makes it easier to distinguish a persistent issue from an intermittent one. These practices can reveal trouble, but no single setting or remedy guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
