To catch Salesforce UI changes before release, compare screenshots of important Lightning pages against approved baselines, then review the differences alongside functional tests. Visual checks show what a user-visible screen looks like; they do not prove that a workflow works. Salesforce recommends Jest for isolated Lightning Web Component (LWC) tests and browser automation for end-to-end flows, while warning that Lightning’s internal HTML, CSS, and DOM are not stable APIs.
How do I catch UI changes in Salesforce before release?
Add visual comparisons to release validation for the pages and states where appearance matters. Capture the same page under controlled conditions on each run, compare it with a reviewed baseline, and investigate differences before approving a release. Treat each screenshot as evidence of one rendered state, not as proof that every user path works or that the page is accessible.
- Choose representative screens and states. Include the Lightning pages, record types, permissions, viewport sizes, and test data that matter to the release. Fix the test data and user context so comparisons are meaningful.
- Capture a baseline in a stable test environment. Keep the browser, viewport, page state, and data consistent across runs. Changes in those conditions can create differences unrelated to the code under test.
- Run comparisons during release validation. Review flagged changes rather than treating every difference as a failure. Approve a new baseline only after deciding that the change is intentional.
- Keep behavior tests in the suite. Assert workflow outcomes and interactions separately. Use Jest for isolated custom LWC behavior and browser automation for end-to-end flows.
- Keep selectors away from private Lightning internals. Prefer maintainable abstractions and evaluate UTAM page objects where they fit. Check their release compatibility when implementing them.
This workflow is implementation guidance, not a Salesforce-prescribed visual-diff recipe. Salesforce’s testing guidance distinguishes component-level and end-to-end testing; it does not prescribe a specific screenshot comparison tool or visual-difference threshold.
What visual testing can and cannot tell you
A visual test compares a rendered screenshot or selected region with an approved reference. It can help surface layout, styling, and rendering changes that deserve review. Functional assertions answer different questions: whether a control responds, a record saves, or a user journey reaches the expected result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Useful for: spotting visible differences on selected pages and states under the capture conditions used.
- Not a replacement for: functional assertions, end-to-end coverage, accessibility evaluation, or testing all possible user contexts.
- Requires review: a difference may be an intentional design change, environmental noise, or a defect. A comparison alone does not determine which.
Should I use Jest or Selenium for Salesforce testing?
Use the tool according to the test layer. Salesforce recommends Jest for individual LWC unit tests. Those tests run at the command line or in an IDE without a browser or org connection and are suited to component isolation, public API, basic interactions, DOM output, and event behavior. Jest is specific to LWC and does not test Aura components. For browser-level end-to-end coverage, Salesforce points to UI automation tools such as Selenium WebDriver. Salesforce’s LWC testing guide and its end-to-end testing guidance describe these boundaries.
| Approach | Best-fit scope | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Jest | Isolated custom LWC behavior, public API, basic interactions, DOM output, and events | No browser or org connection; does not test Aura components |
| Browser UI automation, such as Selenium WebDriver | End-to-end user flows in a browser | Tests that inspect Lightning component internals can require maintenance as the platform changes |
| Visual comparison | Rendered appearance of selected pages or regions | Does not establish that interactions work or that every defect is detected |
These layers complement one another. A screenshot difference can direct a reviewer to a visual change; Jest and browser assertions establish behavior at their respective scopes.
Why do my Salesforce UI tests break after a release?
A common cause is dependence on implementation details inside Lightning Experience. Salesforce states that “The content and structure of HTML, CSS, and the DOM in Lightning Experience can change at any time and can’t be considered a stable API.” It also says it has never guaranteed backward-compatible HTML, CSS, or DOM. Tests that inspect component internals therefore need ongoing maintenance. Salesforce’s end-to-end test guidance explains this risk.

Shadow DOM adds another boundary: LWC encapsulation hides a component’s internal markup from other components, so ordinary global DOM queries do not reach those elements. A test that tries to reach through that boundary is both difficult to maintain and liable to depend on unsupported structure.

How can I test Lightning pages without relying on brittle selectors?
Keep tests focused on supported interfaces and user-observable outcomes instead of private component markup or styling classes. For end-to-end automation, consider page-object abstractions that can isolate selectors and maintenance from individual tests. Salesforce provides UTAM page objects for Lightning Experience and the Salesforce mobile app. Its documentation points Java users to Maven artifacts and JavaScript users to npm artifacts, and advises checking the recipe repositories for compatibility with the current production release. Because artifact compatibility can change, verify the current versions before adopting them. See Salesforce UTAM documentation.

For visual comparisons, select stable, meaningful page regions and keep capture context consistent. Do not make a visual assertion depend on private DOM structure merely to locate a screenshot target; choose an approach supported by the test framework and page abstraction in use.
Choosing a visual testing approach for a Salesforce team
Salesforce’s overview distinguishes commercial Salesforce ecosystem tools, system integrator services, and open-source frameworks. It is a category-level overview, not a current evaluation of named vendors or prices. Compare options against your team’s scope, ownership, upkeep, and portability rather than assuming one approach is best for every org. Salesforce’s overview of UI testing routes describes these broad trade-offs.
| Route | Potential fit | Trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial ecosystem tool | Teams seeking a maintained product integrated into the Salesforce testing ecosystem | Salesforce’s overview notes licensing can be costly and portability may be lower; verify current capabilities, costs, and Salesforce-release support with the vendor |
| System integrator service | Teams that want outside implementation or testing support | Services cost money and may involve ongoing maintenance contracts |
| Open-source framework | Teams prioritizing portability and willing to own implementation | No license fee does not remove the engineering work of setup and continued maintenance |
For any option, establish who updates selectors or page objects after Salesforce changes, who reviews visual differences, and how intentional baseline changes are approved. The Salesforce overview does not provide current prices, and the Salesforce sources do not assess vendor review interfaces.
