OBS Studio is the best-supported free starting point for playing a church-service playlist into YouTube Live. It is free, but it runs on your own computer: the computer, power, internet connection and outgoing stream must keep working for the broadcast to continue. If you need unattended playback without leaving a local computer on, a cloud playout service is a different option.

What OBS does—and what it does not

OBS Studio is free, open-source production and encoder software. You can use it to arrange media, scenes, audio and graphics, then send the resulting feed to YouTube Live. YouTube describes an encoder as the software or hardware that sends a digital video feed; connecting it requires YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. OBS does not itself create the YouTube event or guarantee an always-on broadcast.

The software has no watermark or usage limitations, according to the OBS Project Help Portal. “Free” refers to OBS: a suitable computer, electricity, internet service and someone to monitor the setup may still have costs.

Set up a continuous playlist stream with OBS

  1. Check live access in YouTube Studio. Enable live streaming for your channel if you have not already. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the service. After activation, streams can go live instantly. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream. Scheduling creates an upcoming event viewers can share and may let them set reminders. Keep the event open while you configure the encoder.
  3. Prepare the playlist and scenes in OBS. Add the video files or media sources you intend to play and arrange the scene and audio sources needed for the service. Check the playlist order and playback behavior before relying on it during a broadcast. Keep the scene setup as simple as the service requires.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio into the corresponding streaming settings in OBS. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or share it. Start the encoder feed from OBS and confirm YouTube Studio receives it before starting the public event.
  5. Run a full rehearsal. Test the stream key midweek, then do a private or unlisted run-through with someone watching remotely. Check that speech and music are audible, scene changes work, and the picture is stable; watch the recording back for problems you may have missed live. These are practitioner recommendations from a vendor-authored church streaming guide, not independent test results: TajiCast’s church-service guide.
  6. Keep the local system operating. During the broadcast, keep the computer powered, OBS running and internet connection available. A playlist controls what plays next; it does not restart OBS or restore a dropped network connection.

Choose settings your connection can sustain

There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every church’s connection and production. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream format, then test from the location and connection you will use on service day. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured capacity of the connection.

Blackmagic Design Streaming Encoder 4K – 4K Ultra HD Live Streaming via SRT & RTMP, SDI Input, Ethernet + Mobile, Includes 6ft Power Cord (BDLKWEB/D/SED4K)
  • 4K & HD STREAMING IN H.264 AND H.265 – Self-contained processor supporting H.264 and H.265 encoding in HD or Ultra HD (up to 2160p60) via SRT or RTMP, streaming directly to YouTube, Facebook, X, Twitch, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, OBS, Wowza, and many more — no encoding PC needed.
  • 12G-SDI INPUT WITH STANDARDS CONVERSION – Supports input resolutions up to DCI 4K60 with an SDI input and SDI loop output, plus Teranex-powered automatic standards conversion so any HD or Ultra HD source streams cleanly at any target resolution.
  • DUAL MONITOR OUTPUTS – Features both SDI and HDMI monitor outputs with a user-configurable standards converter on both the 12G-SDI Out and 4K HDMI Out, so you can feed a confidence monitor or downstream device at any required format independent of your streaming standard.
  • ETHERNET + 5G/4G MOBILE WITH AUTO-FAILOVER – Connect via Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T) or tether a smartphone via USB-C for mobile data, with automatic switchover between connections — ensuring your stream stays on air even if the primary internet connection drops.
  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.
  • Resolution: Select a resolution that your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. If 1080p is unstable, a church-production guide recommends trying 720p; treat that as practical guidance, not a YouTube guarantee.
  • Bitrate and stability: OBS notes that increasing dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again if dropped frames persist.
  • Production load: Camera count, microphones, graphics and scene switching affect the production workflow and may require external audio/video hardware or more encoding capacity. YouTube describes encoder workflows as suitable for productions using external audio/video hardware and advanced setups.

Plan for replays and long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for an indefinitely long broadcast. If the church needs a dependable replay, plan shorter broadcasts or make a separate local recording and check that it is being saved correctly.

Copyright and channel readiness

Before streaming recorded music, videos or other material, confirm the church has the rights or permissions needed for the content on YouTube. A playlist does not change copyright obligations. Also review YouTube’s current live-streaming and channel rules in Studio before the event; eligibility and restrictions can depend on the channel and may change. The general encoder instructions do not establish a different India-only workflow.

When a local free setup is—and is not—the right fit

Need OBS on a local computer Cloud playout
Software charge OBS is free to use. Depends on the provider; check current price and terms.
What must keep running Your computer, power, internet connection and encoder feed. Playback runs from the provider’s cloud; check the specific service’s recovery behavior and terms.
Production control Useful when the church needs local scene, audio or camera production through an encoder. May suit uploaded prerecorded material and unattended playback; capabilities vary by service.
India availability and payment The official YouTube encoder workflow is general, not an India-specific setup. Verify availability, payment options and terms directly with the provider.

YouTube’s encoder documentation lists cloud services that describe 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but that listing does not establish their price, availability in India or partner terms. Choose a provider only after checking those details for your needs.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct event is selected, and the server URL and stream key match that event. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  • Dropped frames increase: OBS identifies an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity for the configured bitrate as likely causes. Reduce bitrate or resolution, check the connection and repeat a test.
  • Playlist advances but the broadcast stops: The playlist cannot keep the computer, OBS or internet connection alive. Check power settings, keep OBS open and arrange monitoring or use a cloud playout service for unattended playback.
  • Viewers cannot hear the service: Check the selected audio sources and levels in OBS during rehearsal, then verify the sound from a remote viewer’s device rather than relying only on the production computer’s monitoring.
  • Replay is missing or incomplete: Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, use a planned local recording or divide the broadcast into shorter events.
