DocRaptor is a hosted HTML-to-PDF API powered by Prince; PrinceXML is the rendering software you can deploy and operate yourself. Choose DocRaptor when you want an API workflow with hosted conversion and usage-based plans. Choose directly deployed Prince when local or cluster deployment and operational control matter—and when you have a license covering your use. Neither choice guarantees identical output across configurations or accessible PDFs from arbitrary HTML, so test your templates and validate the results.

What is the difference between DocRaptor and Prince?

Prince is an application that converts HTML and XML into PDF using CSS. Its documented technologies include HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript/ECMAScript, SVG, and common image formats. Its paged-media support includes CSS-generated page content such as page numbers and headers and footers.

DocRaptor provides a hosted REST API for PDF conversion using Prince. It adds an API-key workflow and choices for returning documents synchronously, asynchronously, or through hosted downloads. It also exposes Prince-related settings and lets API users select a pipeline version.

Question DocRaptor Prince deployed directly
What are you using? A hosted conversion API powered by Prince. The Prince rendering application.
Where does conversion run? Through DocRaptor’s hosted API. On infrastructure you deploy, such as local infrastructure, a cluster, or cloud environments.
What do you manage? Your API integration, inputs, and service-plan usage. Deployment, version upgrades, monitoring, scaling, security, assets, and an appropriate Prince license.
How is it priced? Published monthly document allowances and plan-dependent overage or hosted-download charges. License terms vary by use; commercial site licensing and infrastructure costs need separate consideration.

“DocRaptor uses Prince” is a useful starting point for comparison, not a promise that every setting or PDF will match a directly deployed Prince installation. DocRaptor’s API documentation maps its pipeline versions to Prince and JavaScript engine versions; for example, Pipeline 10.1 is listed with Prince 15.1. Version availability can change, so check the current API reference when selecting a pipeline.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which should you choose?

Choose DocRaptor when you want a hosted API workflow

  • You prefer to send conversion requests to a REST endpoint instead of deploying the rendering software.
  • You need API-side synchronous or asynchronous generation, or optional hosted document downloads.
  • Your budget fits a monthly plan and any applicable overage or download charges.

Choose directly deployed Prince when you need deployment control

  • Your architecture calls for local, cluster, or cloud deployment under your operational control.
  • You can manage versioning, capacity, monitoring, fonts and other assets, and security boundaries for conversion jobs.
  • You have confirmed that the Prince license covers your actual use, including commercial document generation or providing a paid conversion service where applicable.

Neither option is universally cheaper or better for every workload. Compare expected monthly volume and bursts, the full DocRaptor plan and overage costs, any hosted-download charges, the Prince license that actually applies, and your infrastructure and engineering costs. A meaningful break-even calculation needs your document volume, operating costs, and a relevant Prince quote.

Prince licensing depends on the use

YesLogic describes commercial site licensing as an annual fee that includes upgrades and support, with fees starting around US$2,000 per year based on document type and volume. That starting figure does not establish the price for a particular workload.

Prince also lists one-time per-server pricing for government institutions and other noncommercial entities producing internal or freely published documents, a desktop license, and a separate academic discount. Its licensing FAQ says commercial customer documents and paid conversion services require a commercial site license; OEM redistribution requires an OEM license. Eligibility depends on the activity, so confirm the applicable terms with YesLogic rather than assuming a noncommercial or lowest-priced option covers commercial use.

Will the PDFs look the same?

Not necessarily. Both workflows center on Prince, but DocRaptor’s pipeline maps to particular Prince and JavaScript engine versions, and output also depends on configuration and inputs. No universal rendering parity or comparative benchmark is established here.

Before choosing for a production workload, render representative documents on the exact versions and settings you expect to use. Keep the HTML, CSS, fonts, images, JavaScript behavior, and required PDF profile consistent. Compare pagination, line breaks, tables, headers and footers, metadata, and any accessibility checks that matter to your use case.

What about accessible PDFs and PDF profiles?

DocRaptor documents options for PDF profiles, including PDF/A and PDF/UA variants depending on pipeline. A profile option is not proof that a particular output conforms to a standard, and rendering support alone does not make arbitrary source content accessible.

Prince’s output documentation cautions: “Prince does not create WCAG-compliant documents by itself – care has to be taken, and the HTML source has to be coded in specific ways to address all requirements in order to create WCAG-compliant PDF documents.” Source semantics, tagging, and document structure matter. Check the requirements for your applicable version and standard, then validate generated PDFs with the checking process your organization requires.

What does self-hosting Prince involve?

Prince’s server integration documentation includes Docker and cloud deployment examples, including AWS and Azure. Its input documentation allows local input or content fetched over HTTP/HTTPS, and flags security implications when processing user-supplied HTML, XML, CSS, or JavaScript.

For a self-hosted deployment, plan for:

  • Input isolation: treat untrusted documents and their scripts or styles as a security boundary.
  • Network controls: decide what the renderer can fetch over HTTP or HTTPS, and restrict outbound access where appropriate.
  • Asset availability: provide the required fonts, images, stylesheets, and other resources reliably.
  • Operations: manage version upgrades, monitoring, capacity, scaling, and support.
  • License scope: confirm that the license covers the number and type of deployments and how documents are produced or distributed.

DocRaptor shifts the rendering deployment to a hosted API, but you still need to integrate authentication, submit suitable inputs, handle the response mode you choose, and account for plan limits and optional service charges.

How should you make the final decision?

  1. Define the workload. Estimate ordinary monthly volume, peak bursts, document complexity, and whether generation must happen inside infrastructure you control.
  2. Check license and data constraints. Ask whether commercial customer documents, paid conversion services, server count, or redistribution affect your Prince license choice; assess whether hosted conversion fits your data-handling requirements.
  3. Calculate full costs. Include DocRaptor’s monthly allowance, likely overages and hosted-download charges, or Prince licensing plus infrastructure and operational work.
  4. Run a representative rendering comparison. Match versions and inputs, then inspect layout, metadata, and required accessibility checks rather than assuming a shared engine means identical files.
  5. Verify current terms and versions. Prices, plan limits, licensing terms, and supported pipeline mappings can change; confirm them with the vendors before committing.

ScreenshotNeo is a separate option for screenshots, not an HTML-to-PDF substitute

If your actual task is capturing a webpage as an image or a screenshot-oriented PDF, try ScreenshotNeo first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Prince-based HTML-to-PDF conversion service. For a different workflow such as converting your own HTML documents into PDFs, compare DocRaptor and Prince as described above.

For screenshot capture, ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
