DocRaptor is a hosted HTML-to-PDF service built on Prince; WeasyPrint is an open-source Python renderer you can run yourself. Both support print-oriented CSS, but support varies by feature, version, and how CSS behaves in a real document. Choose by testing the templates and PDF features your project actually needs—not by assuming either will reproduce a browser pixel for pixel.
How DocRaptor and WeasyPrint differ
| Question | DocRaptor | WeasyPrint |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A hosted HTML-to-PDF API. DocRaptor says it uses Prince. | A free, open-source Python-based document renderer that teams can run themselves. |
| How is it operated? | You send a conversion request to a hosted service; review its API and service requirements for your deployment. | You manage the software and its deployment, including resource access and runtime dependencies. |
| Where should you check CSS support? | Prince’s CSS support reference and DocRaptor’s stylesheet guide. | WeasyPrint’s stable API reference, which currently surfaces as version 70.0. |
The delivery model is often as important as CSS. A hosted API can reduce the need to operate a rendering stack, while a self-run renderer gives your team direct control over deployment. Compare privacy requirements, hosting constraints, operational ownership, resource fetching, and the engineering work each option entails.
What “handles CSS better” means for PDF output
CSS support is not a single pass-or-fail score. A renderer may support a specification or property in general while differing on a particular selector, value, interaction with other rules, or pagination result. Prince’s documentation organizes support across properties, selectors, media queries, functions, at-rules, and specifications, and describes many specifications as fully or partially supported. A standards label alone does not establish that every feature in the standard behaves as your document needs.
Start with the parts of your templates that affect the finished PDF:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Selectors and properties that control layout, typography, visibility, and generated content.
- Print rules, including
@media printand the page dimensions and margins declared with@page. - Pagination: page breaks, repeated table headings, running headers or footers, footnotes, and long-document behavior, if required.
- Fonts, right-to-left or bidirectional text, tables, images, and the external assets your documents fetch.
- Forms, links, annotations, accessibility, and the behavior expected in your target PDF readers.
DocRaptor documents embedded, inline, and external stylesheets, as well as page dimensions and margins using @page. Its page-styling guide covers page-specific layout behavior. The vendor’s comparison with WeasyPrint presents Prince as particularly capable for complex paged-media work; treat that assessment as a vendor claim, not an independent matched test.
WeasyPrint also documents print CSS support, but its reference describes specific exceptions and limits. It says CSS 2.1 is “pretty well supported” while identifying exceptions that include table visibility: collapse, certain minimum and maximum dimensions, font-matching differences, right-to-left or bidirectional text, and system colors and fonts. Check the actual feature list for the version you deploy rather than generalizing from the standard name.
WeasyPrint flexbox, grid, and other documented caveats
The WeasyPrint 70.0 stable reference describes flexbox as working for simple use cases and says it is not deeply tested. It likewise describes grid as usable for simple cases while listing unsupported or untested cases, including subgrids and some auto-fill/auto-fit and fragmentation behavior. These are reasons to test the specific layout you use—not evidence that all flexbox or grid layouts fail.

The same reference notes that some CSS 2.1 cases have limitations, including the examples above. It also calls out nonmatching interactive pseudo-classes in PDF. If a design relies on a state such as hover, focus, or another interactive state, check whether that state makes sense in a static PDF and verify the generated result in the readers your audience uses. For every concern, consult the versioned feature reference alongside your deployed WeasyPrint version.

JavaScript is a separate decision from CSS
DocRaptor documents JavaScript execution modes in its API reference. Its vendor-authored comparison says WeasyPrint does not execute JavaScript. If a script creates a chart, fills in content, or changes the DOM, determine whether that work must happen before conversion. Test the resulting PDF and configure DocRaptor’s documented JavaScript behavior and timing for your workflow; do not assume CSS support alone will make script-generated content appear.

Use the same representative source documents and assets in both systems. Build a small test suite from actual templates, not a synthetic CSS checklist alone:

- Long report: include enough content to exercise many pages, headers or footers if used, and page breaks.
- Tables and pagination: include wide and multi-page tables, repeated headings if required, and the break behavior your documents depend on.
- Layout stress case: include the most consequential flexbox, grid, selector, and print-rule patterns in your production templates.
- Fonts and assets: use the fonts, external images, and other resources the deployed conversion will need to fetch.
- Special PDF behavior: add forms, links, generated content, or accessibility requirements only if your product depends on them.
- Render and inspect: compare pagination, line wrapping, font appearance, page breaks, forms, and links in your target PDF viewers and deployment environment.
Record each mismatch by template, feature, renderer version, and whether it blocks release. This helps distinguish a CSS support issue from a missing asset, a font configuration difference, a JavaScript timing problem, or a PDF-reader behavior difference. Re-run the suite when you change renderer versions or templates.
There is no independent matched-version speed or fidelity benchmark established here. Do not infer that one product is faster or more accurate from the products’ delivery models or from DocRaptor’s vendor comparison; measure conversion time and resource use with your own representative workload if those factors decide the choice.

Cost, licensing, and operational fit
The basic procurement distinction is a commercial hosted service versus free open-source software you operate. That does not settle total cost: hosted usage limits and current pricing should be checked with DocRaptor, while a self-run deployment still requires engineering and operations time. The available product references do not establish current comparable prices, volume limits, or total-cost figures, so compare those directly for your expected workload and support needs.

For WeasyPrint, deployment ownership also means reviewing its operational and security guidance. Its documentation discusses precautions for untrusted input and deployment concerns; consult the deployment guidance and use-case guidance for your version and threat model. This is especially relevant if documents can contain user-controlled HTML, CSS, or resource references.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you choose?
- Consider DocRaptor when a hosted conversion API fits your operations and your tests confirm the required Prince CSS and paged-media behavior. Its JavaScript options may also matter when source pages need scripts to create content before conversion.
- Consider WeasyPrint when running an open-source Python renderer yourself fits your deployment, and your test suite passes against the CSS and PDF behavior you need.
- Keep both in contention until representative PDFs settle feature questions. If an important layout, font, form, or pagination case differs, that result is more useful than a blanket claim about CSS support.
For a broader engine context, Prince’s user guide describes converting HTML and XML to PDF using CSS and lists support for formats including HTML, XHTML, XML, SVG, CSS, JavaScript/ECMAScript, and image formats. That context explains DocRaptor’s rendering foundation, but it is not a substitute for testing your own output.
ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for screenshot output, not a drop-in PDF renderer
If your requirement is a rendered webpage screenshot rather than a paginated, styled PDF document, try ScreenshotNeo first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for DocRaptor or WeasyPrint’s full HTML-to-PDF workflows. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures, with options including full-page capture, viewport and device settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, and element selection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WeasyPrint support CSS grid?
Its stable 70.0 reference describes grid as usable for simple cases and lists limitations or untested cases. Check that reference for the deployed version and validate the exact layout.
Does DocRaptor support print CSS?
DocRaptor documents print-oriented page styling, including @page dimensions and margins. Test the page rules and pagination behavior your document requires.
Will either renderer make a PDF identical to a browser screenshot?
Do not assume so. These tools render documents for PDF output; compare the actual PDF against your requirements rather than treating browser appearance as a guarantee.
