Enable one DocRaptor JavaScript engine in the PDF request, then—if the page’s asynchronous work is not finished when DocRaptor would otherwise render—define docraptorJavaScriptFinished() in the HTML. Have it return false while required content is pending and true when that content is ready. A check tied to the actual output is more dependable than choosing an arbitrary delay.

1. Enable JavaScript in the DocRaptor request

DocRaptor disables JavaScript by default. Turn on one JavaScript engine in the request. For most users, DocRaptor recommends its standard engine:

javascript: true

Alternatively, enable Prince’s separate JavaScript engine:

prince_options[javascript]: true

These are distinct engines, not two settings to enable together. DocRaptor warns that enabling both runs the code twice. The standard engine is designed for popular JavaScript tools and libraries, including React, Adobe Typekit, and Highcharts. Prince’s engine provides PDF-specific capabilities such as JavaScript from CSS, multi-pass rendering, and PDF box access; Prince is not a web browser, so its behavior may differ from modern browsers. Choose based on the page’s JavaScript compatibility and whether you need Prince-specific functions. See DocRaptor’s API documentation and JavaScript support guide.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Tell DocRaptor when the page is ready

For content produced after the initial page load—such as a chart populated by an asynchronous request—define docraptorJavaScriptFinished() in the page. DocRaptor calls the function in the page context. It must return false while work is pending and true once the content needed in the PDF is ready. Any other return value is treated as an error.

docraptorJavaScriptFinished = function() {
  return document.getElementById("content-needed-in-pdf") != null;
};

Replace content-needed-in-pdf with an element or other page-state signal that reliably indicates completion. For example, if the page inserts a chart container only after its data arrives, checking for that container is more closely tied to readiness than sleeping for a fixed duration. DocRaptor’s guide to delaying conversion documents this hook and an element-existence example.

Use a fixed delay only when it fits the page

A timer can be a fallback when the application has a known, stable delay, but it does not prove that asynchronous work has finished. DocRaptor’s example uses a didWait flag and setTimeout to wait ten seconds before reporting completion. Treat that as an illustration, not a universal value: slow requests may take longer, while fast ones make a long wait wasteful. Prefer a readiness condition tied to the required output.

3. Diagnose missing JavaScript-generated content

Check the readiness signal and asynchronous work

If expected content is absent, first verify that JavaScript is enabled in the request and that the completion function reports false until the needed content is actually present. DocRaptor notes that asynchronous requests commonly do not finish before rendering by default. Ensure the page’s readiness condition reflects the result you need in the PDF, rather than merely the start of a request.

Disable chart animation for PDF output

Animations can interfere with chart output in a PDF. DocRaptor’s troubleshooting guide advises disabling chart animations when generating PDFs. If chart-library characters render incorrectly, check that the page uses UTF-8 as well.

Distinguish resource timeouts from JavaScript completion

The API’s HTTP resource timeout governs fetching external resources; it is not the JavaScript readiness hook. DocRaptor documents a default of 10 seconds, configurable from 1 to 60 seconds. Increasing it may help a slow resource load, but it does not replace a page-side completion condition.

Check console-message behavior for your pipeline

DocRaptor documents different defaults by pipeline: in Pipelines 1–6, console messages halt document generation by default; in Pipeline 7 and later, they are ignored and logged by default. If a request fails around a browser-console message, check which pipeline behavior applies to your account in the API reference.

4. Account for request time limits

DocRaptor documents a 60-second hard limit for synchronous requests and a 600-second limit for asynchronous requests. Asynchronous processing changes how a long-running document is created and retrieved; it does not tell the page when its JavaScript work is complete. Keep the two concerns separate: use the page hook for readiness, and choose synchronous or asynchronous handling according to the document request’s duration. See DocRaptor’s asynchronous document creation guide and time-limit documentation.

5. Test safely and protect the API key

DocRaptor’s tutorial shows how to make a test-mode request; test documents are watermarked. Use that mode to check whether the expected JavaScript-generated content appears before switching to production requests. The tutorial also warns that placing the browser-side DocRaptor JavaScript library on a publicly accessible page exposes the API key in the page source. Do not put a live key there; use a server-side agent or the documented referrer-based API approach instead. See DocRaptor’s tutorial.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean capture of a web page rather than a DocRaptor-generated PDF, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; for a PDF, use its documented PDF options. This is a different workflow from configuring DocRaptor’s JavaScript completion hook.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters, output formats, and PDF options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enable both DocRaptor JavaScript engines?

No. DocRaptor says enabling both causes the code to run twice; choose one engine for the request.

Does using an asynchronous DocRaptor request wait for JavaScript?

No. Asynchronous creation changes request handling and retrieval. The page’s docraptorJavaScriptFinished() function signals when JavaScript-generated content is ready.
