For a direct Playwright screenshot, pass animations: 'disabled' to page.screenshot():
await page.screenshot({ animations: 'disabled' });This handles CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations during capture. Playwright’s direct screenshot option defaults to 'allow', so set it explicitly when you want screenshot-time animation handling.
Disable animations in a direct screenshot
Use the animations option on the screenshot call:

});The option applies to CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations. It is a capture-time setting: a direct page.screenshot() otherwise allows animations by default. The current Microsoft Playwright API documentation describes this behavior; check the API documentation for the version installed in your project because option details can change between releases: Page | Playwright.
What “disabled” does to each animation
- Finite animations: Playwright fast-forwards them to completion and fires the
transitionendevent. - Infinite animations: Playwright cancels them at their initial state for the screenshot, then plays them over after capture.
As a result, disabled does not mean “freeze every animation at the exact frame visible when the call starts.” If your application responds to transitionend, fast-forwarding a finite animation may affect application state. Check the captured result when that event matters to the page.

Choose the right method for tests and reduced-motion behavior
For a visual regression assertion
Use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion:

This assertion is provided by the Playwright test runner; for a standalone capture rather than a visual assertion, use page.screenshot(). See PageAssertions | Playwright.
To test the site’s reduced-motion response
Emulate the prefers-reduced-motion media feature when you want to test how the page responds to that user preference:

});A custom stylesheet can also hide or alter specific dynamic elements. Playwright documents that screenshot styles apply through Shadow DOM and inner frames. The style option was added in Playwright v1.41, so confirm your installed version supports it before using it. Injected CSS can change layout or visibility; prefer the built-in animations option when you only need Playwright’s documented animation handling. See Page | Playwright.
Troubleshoot screenshots that still differ
- The direct screenshot still shows motion: Check that
animations: 'disabled'is on the actualpage.screenshot()call. Direct screenshots default to'allow'. - The page changes after an animation ends: Finite animations are fast-forwarded and emit
transitionend. If application code listens for that event, it can update the page before capture. Inspect the captured state and account for the event-driven behavior in the test. - Reduced-motion emulation has no visible effect: Emulation sets the media preference; it does not force every page to stop motion. Check whether the site implements a response to
prefers-reduced-motion. - A screenshot assertion is unstable for another reason:
toHaveScreenshot()waits for consecutive captures to match, but this is not a guarantee that unrelated dynamic content will become stable. Inspect changing page content as well as animations. - The screenshot stylesheet option is unavailable: The documented
styleoption requires Playwright v1.41 or later. Upgrade to a version that supports it or useanimations: 'disabled'for built-in capture handling.

Does `animations: ‘disabled’` freeze an animation at its current frame?
No. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, while infinite animations are canceled at their initial state for the screenshot and played over afterward.
