1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want to remove an unwanted scrollbar from a Playwright screenshot, use the Page screenshot API’s style option to apply CSS only for that capture. Target the element that actually scrolls: the document root for page scrolling, or the specific panel for a nested scroll area. If you want the scrollbar visible instead, first check whether you are capturing the viewport, the full document, or a nested element.
Hide an unwanted scrollbar for one screenshot
Playwright’s page.screenshot() accepts a style option for CSS applied while rendering a screenshot. This lets you adjust screenshot styling without changing the application’s permanent stylesheet. The correct CSS depends on which element owns the scrolling; there is no single selector established as a universal fix across pages and browsers. See the Playwright Page screenshot API.
- Identify whether the document or a nested panel scrolls. Scroll the page or panel in the browser and inspect which element’s content moves.
- Pass a screenshot-time stylesheet that hides the scrollbar for that scroll owner, then capture the page.
- Check the resulting image in the same browser and environment you use for the intended capture.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'screenshot.png',
style: `
/* Replace this comment with a scrollbar-hiding rule
scoped to the element that actually scrolls. */
`,
});
The API option is documented, but the CSS rule must be chosen and checked for the target browser and scroll owner. For example, a rule aimed at the document will not necessarily hide the bar belonging to an independently scrolling panel.
Keep the change capture-only
Use style when the application should retain its normal scrollbar for visitors but the generated image should not show it. If you instead add a rule to the application stylesheet, it may affect ordinary page rendering and users, not just screenshots.

If the scrollbar is missing but you want it
Do not assume fullPage: true means “take a screenshot of every scrolled viewport” or expands every scrollable region. Playwright documents fullPage as capturing the full scrollable page; its default is false. A Playwright collaborator explained that full-page capture renders the document’s scrollable content, not the expanded contents of nested scroll containers. For a nested panel, capture the panel itself when that is the content you need. See the Playwright discussion of nested scroll containers and the screenshot API.
| Capture type | What to check |
|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | Captures the current viewport. The visible scrollbar depends on the browser, operating system, page styling, and capture environment. |
| Full-page screenshot | Captures the document’s scrollable content. It does not expand nested scrolling panels. |
| Element screenshot | Captures a specific element, such as a nested panel. Check that the chosen element and its visible area match the desired output. |
If you need the bar itself to appear in a full-page image, distinguish that from wanting the page’s entire content. Full-page capture is about document content, and the presence of a scrollbar is not guaranteed. A report against Playwright 1.50.1 on Windows 11 described a missing body scrollbar in a full-page screenshot; that is an environment-specific issue report, not a guarantee about all installations. See issue #35328.

Troubleshoot the result
- The CSS has no effect: Confirm which element scrolls, then scope the injected rule to it. A nested panel can own scrolling independently of the document.
- The panel contents are cut off:
fullPagedoes not expand nested scroll containers. Capture the panel element itself or use a capture approach that matches the desired panel state. - The scrollbar is absent in a full-page image: Do not treat this as proof that the page has no scrollbar. Full-page capture renders document content, and reported behavior can vary by environment. Check Playwright version, browser, operating system, and capture type.
- A launch flag did not change the output: Issue reports describe differing expectations around
--hide-scrollbarsand screenshot modes. Do not rely on that flag as a universal solution; use screenshot-time CSS for hiding an unwanted bar, or diagnose the capture scope when a bar is missing. See the related issue report.
