Unicode is not a screenshot setting: legible glyphs depend on the text being present and a suitable font being available to the browser.
Capture the page after its text and fonts are ready
This Node.js example opens a page, checks for expected text, waits for browser font loading to settle, and saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the URL and sample text with the page and script you need to verify.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
// Use text that should actually appear on the target page.
const expectedText = 'नमस्ते';
await page.getByText(expectedText, { exact: false }).waitFor();
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'indian-language-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
networkidle is only one possible navigation condition. Sites with persistent requests may never reach it; choose a condition appropriate to the page, then wait for a locator that proves the required content has appeared. A successful navigation alone does not establish that client-rendered text or custom fonts are ready.
Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
Use the capture mode that matches the evidence you need. Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, and screenshots of a locator (Playwright screenshots).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Viewport:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' })captures the visible viewport. - Full page:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true })captures the full scrollable page. - One element:
await page.locator('.article').screenshot({ path: 'article.png' })captures a selected element. Use a selector that identifies the content you want.
For screenshot scale, Playwright documents css as one output pixel per CSS pixel and device as one output pixel per device pixel. Choose deliberately: device-pixel output can provide more pixels for human review, while a fixed CSS viewport and scale can help keep layout comparisons consistent. The context option deviceScaleFactor defaults to 1 (browser context options).
Diagnose missing or incorrect Indian-script glyphs
If text appears as boxes, blanks, or unexpected characters in the image, distinguish a content-loading problem from a font-rendering problem before changing screenshot settings.

- Confirm the text exists. Wait for the exact expected text or a page-specific locator. If it never appears, investigate navigation, application rendering, or the selector rather than the screenshot call.
- Wait for fonts. Run
await document.fonts.readyin the page before capture when the site uses web fonts. This waits for the browser’s font-loading work to settle; it does not guarantee that the chosen font contains the glyphs needed for every language. - Inspect font loading and selection. If the site depends on a downloadable font, check whether its font request succeeded and inspect the computed
font-familyfor the text element. Confirm that the intended font is actually available and supports the relevant script. - Open and inspect the resulting image. A completed screenshot call cannot prove that glyphs rendered correctly. Verify the image itself.
There is no universal font requirement for all Indian languages or sites: the needed glyph coverage depends on the script, page, and font setup. If the browser lacks an appropriate installed or downloaded font, waiting for document.fonts.ready cannot supply one.
Keep visual comparisons reproducible
When creating a baseline and later comparing screenshots, keep the environment and capture settings stable. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode, among other factors (Visual comparisons).

- Use the same browser engine and version.
- Keep the host operating system and headless mode consistent.
- Fix the viewport and
deviceScaleFactor. - Keep font availability and the page’s font setup consistent.
These controls reduce avoidable variation; they do not make screenshots identical across environments if other rendering conditions differ.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Expected text is absent | The page or client-rendered content has not reached the expected state, or the locator does not match. | Wait for a page-specific locator containing the expected text; verify the text and selector against the target page. |
| Text is present but glyphs show as boxes or blank spaces | The active font may not have the necessary glyphs, or its web-font request may have failed. | Check the font request, computed font family, and font availability; inspect the image after waiting for document.fonts.ready. |
networkidle never completes |
The site may keep network activity open. | Use a navigation wait condition suited to the page and then wait for the content you need, rather than relying on network idleness alone. |
| Screenshot differs from the baseline | Browser or host rendering conditions, viewport, scale, or fonts changed. | Compare the browser engine/version, operating system, headless setting, viewport, device scale factor, and font setup. |

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Does Playwright automatically wait for a website’s custom fonts before taking a screenshot?
Do not assume it does. Explicitly wait for document.fonts.ready when the page uses web fonts, and verify the rendered image.
Best Value
Does Unicode support alone ensure every Indian-language character will display?
No. The page must contain the text, and the browser needs an available font with glyphs for the relevant script.
